If you're not going to answer the phone, there needs to be a way to make edits and/or cancellations to appointments online, especially when your business charges a cancellation fee. Eventually went in person and the woman there had me speak to a stylist on the phone who took my name and details and confirmed they would cancel my appointment. Woke up to a text the morning of my original appointment saying the stylist is sick and seeing if would like to see someone else today instead, so clearly the cancellation was never even processed on their end. Thankfully they cancelled on me, so I won't be hit with that fee (knock on wood), but I definitely don't want to reschedule now knowing how difficult it is to make any changes. read more

NO ONE answers the phone EVER and it's not possible to change or cancel an an appointment you booked on line (why, I don't know! ) so the only option is to literally physically go there to ask for them to cancel. I had high hopes for this place, but it was just the visuals and "look" of this place's salon that drew me in. Made an appointment for two people. Has to cancel, so I tried doing so a few days in advance. Called at least few times over three days, no one picks up and the voice mailbox is full. Was contacted by someone named "Leo," who claimed they were my stylist (untrue, since I had booked with Uma or someone else). I thought Leo was a receptionist. No consistent form nor any professionalism with customer service. Furthermore, when I didn't arrive (because I had to cancel), Leo texted reminding me of the appointment. Was shot down for not having texted Leo about this, despite me contacting Melo Yelo via phone and email (more than twice, to ensure my cancellation would be seen). No response. No customer service. No taking of responsibility for having contact info the salon clearly doesn't use. Cherry on top, was blamed for not knowing that Melo Yelo, despite being called "Melo Yelo Hairdressing," is just a building. I understand that independent stylists rent out the chairs, but you NEED a general receptionist. CUSTOMERS should not be responsible for not knowing a salon is really NOT a comprehensive salon. I'm giving this place 5/5 (despite some thing I wish was different which I'll get to in a bit.) Melo Yelo is conveniently located in my neighborhood which is fantastic, since I'll go back! It is very clean, the staff is friendly, and Zara did a WONDERFUL job. I came in vaguely describing what I want (color wise) and she nailed it! The dusting off (cut) my ends was easy, quick, and is one of the best trims I've ever gotten. My hair feels so clean and looks incredibly well groomed and vibrant. Zara helped me feel much more confident in less than 2 hours! The salon assistant whose name I don't know was so friendly, and helpful. And did a great job washing out my hair. But, this is the part that I found odd - and maybe this is normal in NY - but my stylist had another client while doing my hair, so I kind of felt like she wasn't mine for the time that I booked. I wasn't a fan of that (but not a deal breaker!) I will definitely be going back to Melo Yelo, while their pricey for Sunnyside - it's worth it. TIP: they only accept cash tips. Lacking Basic Customer Service Booked 2 haircut appointments for myself and my daughter at the same time, however the salon clearly double booked the second appointment and rather than apologize and explain there was a mistake - chose to avoid all eye contact and ignore me while my daughters hair was being cut. (She and the other stylist did not hesitate to whisper in front of us, however, about how they didn't know what had happened with the double booking.) I waited 30 mins for my appointed stylist to finish cutting her other customers hair, but as she finished another customer arrived and was then taken ahead of me. No apology, no explanation about why my appointment was being ignored, just completely avoided all eye contact. I ended up waiting 1 hr for my daughters haircut to be finished; it was fine but nothing special. My daughters stylist did finally apologize (at time of payment) for my having to wait, saying they were "running behind schedule" because they were "so busy" on Saturdays. My daughters stylist also said she could not give me a haircut because she had another customer ( no one else was there). She said I could continue to wait for my "scheduled" stylist (I believe the owner) who still had not spoken a single word to me or even offered a hello, although was completely chatty with the other two customers that overlapped my appointment. After having waiting for 1 hr, she offered no time frame of when she could get to me, made no offer to schedule a later appointment, just chose to completely ignore me - not even basic courtesy. Got a color correction (of a terrible neon orange color job I did) and they brought my hair back to life. The major point I want to make is that the stylist was not judgmental or mean about my pandemic mistake, and rather, laughed it off with me. For context: I had gone to several other consultations at other salons and the stylists were so condescending and aggressive about my neon orange error that I always left feeling even more shitty about the *cheeto dust halo* on my head. I did not actually end up getting my haircut, so this review has nothing to do with anyone's skills (since I have no clue what they are!). This was my first time coming to Melo Yelo and I will not be returning. My initial appointment got rescheduled due to Barbara the stylist not feeling well (no biggie! Life happens). I called the salon to rebook, got in the same week and was excited to try this salon out, as I'd passed it so many times before! When I arrived for my appointment, Barbara took me quickly to her chair and we started to chat about what I wanted done. The consultation was very rushed and I did not feel like she listened to me. When I had concerns about what she was saying, rather than talk it through with me, she doubled down on the attitude. I should've left then, but just tried to brush the dismissive attitude off and blamed it on the holiday business (I used to work at salons! I know this time of year is hell). After the consultation, Barbara said ok, great let's get you shampooed, took me over and then said actually, we're backed up just hang on. No prob. So I sat, and sat, and then Barbara took her color client for a full cut and style. Without saying a word to me about what was going on. I continued to sit there, without a word from anyone, so got up and left...and shocker, not a word was said to me when I did... Here's the thing: I'm very understanding. Went to Melo Yelo after reading so many positive reviews. I am glad I went to this salon for my haircut. I stopped in and spoke to Barbara, also showed her a picture of the cut I wanted. I hadn't had short hair for a few years and wanted a change. She suggested that I see Una, that she was really expert with short haircuts. I am thrilled with the results, but most importantly with how skillful and sensitive Una was. She looked at the picture of the short haircut and suggested we do the cut in stages, just to be sure I was ready for that big of a change. She cut my hair chin length and stopped. I looked at it for a bit, but was confident that the short haircut would be fine. Una happily returned to the drawing board and finished the cut. She really worked very attentively until it was just right. I left a very happy and satisfied customer. Ran into some friends and neighbors on the way home who complimented my new look, and that it knocked 10 years off my age I like to support neighborhood businesses and will be returning to Melo Yelo. I had given this place a 3 star rating but I believe one star is more appropriate. I've gotten my hair cut at Melo Yelo 4-5 times and never did I come out of the salon feeling confident or different, just shorter hair. I now know it's because this salon doesn't know how to use properly use thinning scissors and how to blow dry hair. It's a shame I've wasted my time and money at this hair salon especially since the workers never got to know me and would always repeat the same dialogue even if I've met the stylist beforehand. I'm very happy I found a new hair salon and I urge anyone that isn't happy with their first time here to never go back. read more

I came to this salon for my first balayage, and Krissy did not disappoint! At first I wasn't sure if I wanted some sort of highlight or balayage, and Krissy did a nice job of explaining the differences and which would be better for the look I'm going for. She was attentive to my specific requests. The entire process took about 2 hours and $220 plus tip. Easily one of the cheapest and quickest in the area! For tip, they accept cash or venmo. The only slight issue that came up was at the end of my experience. I thought every place would dry your hair as curtesy, but Krissy explained that she didn't have enough time to dry since I didn't book a blowout with my appointment. Came here last night for a haircut and color and WOW. The salon is very clean and has a calming vibe, plus everyone was properly masked whilst inside. Krissy gave her advice and helped me identify what I wanted based on pictures - and gave me exactly that! My dead ends were trimmed yet my length was maintained (she double checked what I was comfortable with cutting which is a plus) and then I was given a beautiful melty ombre color that I am still obsessing over. Will 10/10 be back to this salon - Krissy is not only talented with scissors but color as well, I feel like a new person. read more

Everyone see Amanda! I had a horrible experience at a prior salon and I needed a quick fix. I called day of and was able to get an appointment! Who knew this little gem was right under my nose. Amanda not only was super attentive to my needs and what I wanted, she KNEW WHAT SHE WAS DOING. A lot of salons (most of the salons) are such hit and miss, this one was definitely a hit. Amanda made me feel confident in her abilities and gave me a beautiful balayage and cut. I am Korean and have fine dark hair and she was able to give me a color that wasn't too orange or brassy (which can tend to happen a lot). I also wanted an asymmetrical bob (which the last salon was not able to achieve) and she knew exactly what I wanted and went above and beyond my expectations. I had a great experience with Leana K! I had hacked my own lob from very long hair three months ago and it was time to get a professional cut. I told her that I needed it to at hit below my collarbone (so about 2 inches shorter) and asked if she could clean up my bad attempt at layers. I showed her a few pictures from the Internet for inspiration and we tallked about blunt vs. layers. I told her I'm not crazy about layers, and she suggested a little bit of texturing, which was exactly what I needed, so that my thick Indian hair doesn't hang too heavy. Anyway, she's a good listener and intuitive. And she didn't scold me for cutting my own hair. It's the day before Christmas Eve, and I think she's subbing, but I really hope she stays on so I can go to her regularly. It's good to have a place in Sunnyside to go to! read more

Have been coming here for at least two years and it saddens me to leave a bad review but the attention and care has gone considerably downhill. The last two to three haircuts I've received have been MUCH too quick, little attention to detail and I've received the same cut all three appointments despite very different visual references each time. My haircut last week including the shampoo had me in and out in under 20 minutes, i thought it was as a joke when she said she was ready to blow dry. my hair has no style, was poorly cut and I am left upset and with no clue how to get close to what I wanted with products, styling, etc. I wanted to call and complain but I am so disappointed with my cut I don't want the stylist to take responsibility for "fixing" it and will go elsewhere. read more

I have been to Melo Yelo now twice as they are conveniently located down the street from me in Sunnyside. Each time they were running extremely late and a cut/color took over 3 hours. If the appointments had been timed properly I would have been out of there in 2, maybe 2.5, but I ended up sitting as Barbara had to cut and blow dry other customers. My first time in I got neither the cut nor the color I had asked for. Barbara was extremely rushed the entire time and when she does highlights she tugs and rushes through the foils. I wanted to say - take a deep breath and relax - you are making this experience very stressful! Even the second time I brought photos and explained in detail what I liked and didnt like about her first attempt. When she repeated back to me what I had asked for, it was not anything like what I had said! Then when the color came out it was better than the first time but was ash blond and not golden blond like I had specifically requested (no to ash, yes golden!). She seems to be very eager to cut hair. I've had long locks for a number of years and am used to asking for a 'dusting'. Each time I've approached her on this she has said "well I need to take off at least a half an inch" when my ends are not split and i'm not asking for that much restructuring of my cut.
