Cant believe i never reviewed this one? Tldr, rubbish greens, could be tiring for unfit peeps, inflation proof and byob. Minus the greens, this is my favorite type of florida-ish executive course. 18 holes can be had in under 3 hours, all u need is physical ability to carry 7i- sw for about 2 miles. This is a very tough course to score on from the green conditions and layout. You have to be able to hit it high and low, the size of the greens basically means ur short sided any time you miss one. Fun course, wish it had lights at night! read more

This course is in poor shape, but for ~$15 how could you reasonably expect more? It looks almost like someone setup a golf course at a city park. The staff are friendly and the price is unbeatable. It's a great opportunity to have a laid back time and/or practice your short game for a similar cost of an outing at a driving range. read more

My daughter and I played golf here yesterday. We had so much fun as this fit with the skill level of my daughter who is taking lessons but is still a beginner. The Good: Price (18-holes only costs $15/person). Good variety of holes (holes range from 70-150 yards and no two holes are the same). Was very easy to walk-on and was not very crowded. The Bad: The condition of the golf course is okay at best (but given the price, easy to forgive). The worst thing were the greens, not smooth at all and just closely mowed "fairway" grass w/ lots of sand. If you want to hone your putting skills, this course is not for you. Even given the negatives, it really is a great place to practice your short-medium game, and is such a bargain. We would definitely go back! read more

Absolute DOG TRACK. Course/Greens maintenance is atrocious. The only reason(s) the course didn't get a 1 star review was because the staff in the pro shop was friendly and the greens fees are cheap and last all day. Melrose Golf Club is like that beautiful girl you fell in love with in high school and every time you look at her Facebook, even though she's married with kids, she still looks good. Affordable golf, SUPER nice golfers and employees, decent course condition (Golf Pro was walking through and tending to the greens during our round), incredibly fun layout, perfect amount of water, great for beginners or people looking to burn a few hours and have fun with friends. For the price this is a great place to hit the range, chip or putt. The greens are dry and not so green. The staff is friendly and everyone that plays here is friendly. Every Thursday there is a $20 tournament really fun and challenging. read more

3 years ago I started playing at melrose golf course this was the course that introduced me to my golf addiction. It does have its rough edges as any course does but melrose has such welcoming atmosphere. This place has dialed inn my 150 yard inn shots and chipping around the greens is my strongest suit thanks to melrose. This is a great spot for anyone just getting into golf as well as someone wanting to attack pins on other courses from approach range. Kid and dog friendly and the best part is BYOB. Management just fixed the irrigation system so greens should be rolling pure in the next coming weeks. 10 stars highly recommend this place!!! read more

You can go to Memorial Park and spend $12 on a Lg bucket at the range on an artificial turf mat or you can play an 18-hole Par 3 course and get real practice on grass with irons, wedges, and to a limited degree your putter. Most of the greens need help and there are no bunkers (for SW practice), but the real grass practice with 6-PW is great for $10-$12!! A few golf community fund raisers and the course could be maintained better, the greens improved, etc. Also, the range is very good with real grass (and less expensive than Memorial and even 50-50 Acorn (which I also recommend))! Tony Martinez (Mgr and former pro who offers lessons) is a great guy who loves the game and this course, but he needs outside support bc the City of Houston hasn't budgeted to make this the best Par 3 it can be! PS It would also be great if he could sell beer for the 19th Hole! Maybe have a food truck come in 1-2 evenings per week and advertise it. Come on City of Houston, help out this hidden treasure! read more

It's Nov 2019 and the Par 3 course is still open. This was something I wasn't sure about when I wanted to check this place out with friends. I called two days in a row multiple times but no one picked up. Turns out it's because the guys running it are outside playing, too. Price is cheap, and it's cash only. $12/pp and an additional $3 for a pull cart for your clubs which I recommend. The grass is very coarse and the "green" around the flag is just grass and sand half of the time. Expect: very very low traffic coming through, ant mounds everywhere you step, dog shit everywhere (the owners have about 4 dogs on the premise that run around but they're very tame). This is good for beginners only and if you haven't gone to many golf clubs. If you are an avid golfer and have been to regular clubs, this place might disgust you. Only come here if you're looking to f- around and not play a real game. Gave it 2 stars for ease of course and price. read more

Neat local community golf course! This neighborhood holds a special place in my heart because my family and friends have always lived around here, so when I found out from my uncle that there was a golf course here I was excited. I had never played golf before and I was somewhat nervous and intimidated at first. I don't have golfing shoes and I was afraid of not playing fast enough and that I might violate some rule and that they might ask me to leave but this was the furthest thing from the truth! The admission is only $10 on a weekday. I made friends with the operators Tony and John and they are really good people. I've become a regular here and my golfing game is improving. This is not a fancy course by all means. This is a great community place to have fun, sure some of the greens are a bit damaged and sandy and some of the flag poles are crooked but don't let that stop you from having a blast on this 3par 18 hole course! This is a very laid back environment and a great place for beginners. read more

This is by far the best golf value in Houston! When a round of golf only costs you $10 ($12 for the weekend), how can you go wrong. Keep in mind, this is a par 3 course - which in some aspects is good. You can knock out a round in no time. They also have the place lit for golfing at night - that is pretty cool. Keep in mind that this is a municipal course and it is about like playing golf in your back yard. The grass is of one species - just cut really short on the greens. I am not sure that they even have an irrigation system - so you will see a lot of dry patches. Make sure you wear some comfortable golf shoes, because you will be walking. They only have pull carts ($3 per cart) available - no golf carts. Also, as mentioned in previous reviews - they do not sell beer in the "club house." If you want to drink, it's BYOB. Even with all the above mentioned, it is definitely worth the money to go out there, wander through one of Houston's "premier" neighborhoods, and play a round. Last time I played here there was only one other pair playing the course - very rare at any course on a Friday afternoon. read more

I used to come here in High school back in the mid 90s. I recently rediscovered this place a few years go. My first time I back to Melrose since then, I saw a four-some and one of the guys was pulling a cooler on wheels stuffed with beer. I instantly knew that this is just the place that I was missing in my conquest to get better at golf. Now I am the guy with the pull cooler to show the ways to other first timers that may find themselves out there. They have a driving range and are supposedly capable of night-time golf, but I have never seen anyone actually out there that late. Melrose is great for someone looking to get better at golf and want to transition from the driving range to an actual course. Playing here will greatly improve your short game as well. There are some patches where it actually looks like you are playing on real grass, but most of the times you will be hitting off some hybrid of dirt and grass so don't get your hopes up, especially if you are playing in the winter season. Ok, it's not that bad, but if you do go in the winter, you will know what I'm talking about. Putting here will make you want to rip your hair out; as occasionally your ball will hit an acorn or randomly shift left to right with no visible break. There are some random water hazards and the occasional dog wandering around the fairway. Despite all of its downfalls, I keep finding myself drawn to this place like a moth to a flame. I can say definitively that Melrose has improved my short game. I highly recommend this place to anyone that is a novice or wants to play some golf with their friends who are novices. Oh and BYOB if you want to play and drink.... read more

Great cheap place to learn how to play or improve your short game. Been a handful of times and it's usually pretty empty so pace isn't a big factor so you can take your time to practice. You can only work on your short iron/wedge game cause the holes aren't that long and the greens are terrible. The greens might even make your putting game worse. The grass is very subpar everywhere with mostly st. augustine but it's not bad for iron play. The place is very chill though. No dress code, BYOB, walk only, no tee times. Can easily play all 18 in 2 hours. Nice relaxing place to play with some friends if they aren't snobs about course quality. Only thing that worries me is that the place is in the sketchy area and one time the grounds keep worker washed my car while i played and haggled me for money when I left. read more

Good beginner 18 hole course. Not beautifully manicure course (far from it), but it's cheap, few people, and you won't feel pressured. Everything is par 3 with distances ranging from 88ft to 140ft. However, if you are anything but beginner, you probably won't want to come here because of several reasons: ant hills everywhere, grass is green and coarse, the green is sometimes more sandy than grass. But hey, we don't mind and you can't beat the price. We had tons of fun! read more

To say I didn't know what to expect when I pulled up on a sunny (and 65 degree) Monday afternoon would be an understatement. I parked what was surprisingly only the 3rd car in the lot and headed to the "pro shop," which looked more like a bait shop and was locked with a note stating the pro was out on the range. As I contemplated my next steps, from out of nowhere a course veteran appeared after apparently finishing his round. With a weathered face, a friendly smile and a southern drawl he informed me that I should just start playing and pay later. "They don't take things too seriously down here if know what I mean" he said with a chuckle. There were no carts or cart paths to be seen, but I did notice an old wooden sign that pointed me to hole #1. So off I went, into the unknown. I had wondered why others skipped the bag carts and were seen with only 2-3 clubs, but quickly realized the putter wouldn't always be necessary on this day (and not because I was all over the pin). The condition of several greens would have made even the crown price MbS proud of his desert kingdom. Others though, were well manicured like some sort of a desert oasis. On several occasions I wasn't sure which direction to head and where the next tee box was. Thankfully some antique signs were there to guide me along my journey on several holes. The scattered beer cans and "beware of dog" signs seen posted on nearby residences had a certain charm that is absent from the typical country club scene witnessed at most golf courses. While the longest hole on the course clocked in at a mere 145 yards, I couldn't help but feel like the $10 fee was quite the bargain. Given the lack of crowds, I was able to log in a full round in approximately 1.5 hours, a time unheard of at Houston's more celebrated public golf courses. After I dropped in a birdie on 16 and crossed the rustic footbridge on 17, I knew that I'd be coming back. As I walked back to my car after finishing the round, I half expected one of my windows to be busted out, but that was foolish thinking on my part and I forward to making it back sometime soon. read more

I will add the caveat that this is five stars for what the course is: a great place to practice golf. It is not a great golf course. The greens are about the same grass as every where else but cut shorter so not a great place to practice putting. You still putt just not the most true greens ever. Iron shots and chipping you get lots of practice with though. Those are pretty crucial to one's golf game. Probably don't need anything bigger than a 9 iron. One hole is 140 so maybe an 8. If you want to hit the same shot a couple times to practice no one will stop you. Do it respectfully though - don't hint multiple balls if someone is waiting. My only complaint is the eighteenth hole made me a little worried from a safety standpoint. The driving range is maybe 30-50 yards behind the 18th green, right on line from the tee shot. There's no reason to hit a ball 30 yards long on a par 3 but I've accidentally hit the ball square with the end of my club and sent it soaring low and far. It just makes me nervous so I wish they'd put a net to gaurd the range just in case. Others complained about lack of water on the course. That's valid but for the price I don't think it detracts significantly. Just pack a water bottle. No golf carts but you can rent a pull cart ($5). There's some noise from surrounding neighborhood on a couple of holes but nothing major. Nice staff. read more

It's all about value! If you need to take mulligans, still hit the tops of balls, or line up for shots and take impromptu "practice" swings, then this place is perfect. Forget the exclusive clubs, high priced green fees, upset foursomes itching to jump ahead, and stiff rules... just pay $12 and go to Melrose for a full 18 holes of par 3 goodness. It's located somewhat in a ghetto-y area, but well worth it. Holes range from 90-120 yds, so all you really need are probably a 7 iron, 9 iron, wedge, and putter. The fairways and greens are pretty shabby, but for someone at my playing level, that doesn't really matter! There are a few water hazards, so bring some cheaper practice balls that you won't mind losing. I've even seen large groups bringing along coolers of beer! Basically, Melrose makes actually playing real golf (and not just the driving range and putting green) accessible to those of us who aren't ready for the fancy courses, or who just wanna relax and have a good time with friends. read more

I just started golfing in 2010 and seen Melrose when I drove by the area. For $12 its a good price when your learning how to play and you don't want to pay top dollar for the fancy courses. The greens are not the greatest they could use some cleaning however it is a good place to practice on your short game. The only clubs need are your 9, 8, for the13th which is the longest hole, Pitch, and putter. Plus BYOB you can't beat that, take some friends with you and walking the course isn't a big deal. I recommend this place for all beginners or for anyone who doesn't feel like paying high prices. read more
