Campfire. Hot chocolate festival. Jan 2024

I came here to try the hot chocolate during the festival. I had the campfire and it was a pretty cool fun interactive experience. Put the chocolate coated marshmallow into the drink and you can hear it start to pop and sizzle like a crackling burning log. Description from website: #116 - CAMPFIRE* Available January 13 - February 14, 2024 A 65% Dark hot chocolate accompanied by a toasted marshmallow cup that, once placed on top of the hot chocolate, melts, crackles and pops with Pop Rocks! This interactive drink is served with graham cookie logs for the crackling fire. *Drink is gluten-free, side contains gluten. The drink itself was ok, not as chocolatey as I would like. I didn't like the texture of the Graham cookie logs. A bit too mushy for me. I tried the malt ball and it was ok. This place specializes in chocolate and also sells ice cream. I'll have to come back and try the chocolate truffles and chocolate bars. They make great gifts for people who are vegan and/or gluten free.

We stopped by Melt Confectionary as they were participating in the Vancouver Ice Cream Festival. R got a variation of the affogato (Tira-gato) and I got the ice cream nachos allowing me to try two flavours of ice cream. I would have to say that this place was a surprise hit for me as I was not expecting much. The ice cream was delicious and hit perfectly and mixed very well with the mini waffle bowls. The tira-gato was also a nice spin on the traditional affogato. Super friendly staff behind the counter. Space is a bit small so not a lot of seating although there are benches outsides as well - just be careful of the bees which would be my only complaint. Overall would highly recommend this place and can't wait to be back this summer!

I ordered the regular 70% hot chocolate with cow's milk and a bit of whip cream. Maybe i should have gone for the drinking chocolate but my drink simply was not nearly chocolates enough. I had such high hopes when i walked in since the place has a wonderful chocolate aroma but my drink was very average. I would put it on par with the hot cocoa at Starbucks. No place to sit inside but there is a bench outside.

It's right beside the Performance Works building. I don't know how long this shop has been here, but in all my life I've never noticed this place until now. I happened to have just come out of an afternoon show at Performance Works and as I was walking away from the Performance Works building, I happened to turn my head and see this shop, so decided to check it out. They're a small shop/ workshop that does tours which teach how chocolate is made. When you walk in, you can smell chocolate in the air. The lady in the shop offered some samples of their chocolate. I tried their Tanduay Rum chocolate and their Earl Grey Tea chocolate. According to their website their chocolate is award winning. To be honest though, I wasn't blown away by what I tasted. It wasn't bad but it also didn't taste to me like it was award winning chocolate. I noticed a sign though that said they had a drink which was part of the Koolfest. This is a new festival that started this year and is a celebration of cold drink creations from vendors of the annual Hot Chocolate Festival. Kasama's creation was a Filipino Cacao Husk & Kape Cold Brew with Vanilla Cinnamon Syrup and Ube Cold Foam. I hadn't had any Koolfest drinks yet, this one sounded appealing and to be honest...I'm the kind of person who tends to feel guilty about taking free samples and then not buying anything! So...having sampled the Tanduay Rum and Early Grey Tea chocolates, I decided to buy a Koolfest drink. Not much of a coffee person usually. This might be only the second time I've ever ordered a cold brew drink. I very much enjoyed this drink! For me to enjoy a coffee beverage, it has to be sweet and this one was sweet...but not excessively sweet. I loved the Vanilla Cinnamon flavor in it. It really hit the spot.

Space/location The space is on the smaller side, so it's not ideal for large groups, but it's cozy and inviting, with a few counter seats inside and some patio seating outside. Food and Drinks: The food and service are consistently good, and compared to many other cafés and patisseries, it offers excellent value for money. The hot chocolate and coffee are standout. The lady behind the machine clearly knows what they're doing, because every cup is spot on. The sandwiches can be a bit hit or miss, but our recent visits have been great. The smoked salmon croissant is served cold (they always check if that's okay), and even so, it's one of my favorites. The portobello sandwich, served warm, is also rich and full of flavor. And the cakes and pastries? Dangerous in the best way possible. The kind that keeps you coming back to North Van "just one more time." :)

I appreciate the expansion of outdoor seating; they could never provide enough for the crowds they attract. We often take our coffee and treats or lunch to the Park - only steps away.
