The old Penny Arcades of Barry Island are a much-loved part of its history. Though they have…read morecertainly moved on into becoming the amusement arcades we'd recognise today with driving and shooting games, there is still a part of the history present in the arcades around the area. Carousel Amusements is home to more of the 'kiddie' games than some other amusement arcades on the seafront. It also offers you to convert the points you score on certain games to equate to prizes behind a big counter. You will most likely end up spending much more on playing the games to get the prize you wouldn't have bought anyway than the prize itself costs. But who needs logic in an amusement arcade. In line with nearly all arcades, you can expect to pay £1 or more for a drive around a virtual track. In the summer season these arcades can be buzzing with kids spending their pocket money and competitive adults hoping for glory on one of the many racing games. But as with much of Barry Island if you venture in the winter months then you may be only person there. More games for you!

For some reason it has a whole section dedicated to 'Tragic life stories' so if you're looking for some heartache and misery it will certainly deliver.

I've recently been looking into the idea of attending an aromatherapy course over the winter…read moremonths. It strikes me as being a nurturing and warming thing to do whilst the weather outside does its worst! I have stumbled across a number of places in the region that offer courses in aromatherapy, but none that provide tuition so inexpensively as Barry Community Learning Centre. The carlton Institute charges several hundred pounds for a really short course, but here they charge a fraction of this. They also run some other great courses that I may well consider doing, like Tai Chi for instance! (I think I'll give the belly dancing a miss). All the classes are in the evenings and so it's ideal for people who work 9 to 5! I'll see you there!

They do however, also have a good selection of music books and sheet paper, Including many scores from popular films, TV shows and Musicals. My younger sister particularly liked this store as she was delighted to discover that they had a Glee music book, which she has now been practicing continuously!

When it comes to musical instrument shops, there's a lot to be said for service. In the more…read morepopular, wider-known stores such as Cranes, there's an unfortunate tendency for snootiness to set in amongst the staff. That distasteful though that goes "we are the instrument masters, and you people want to come and get your grubby fingers all over them? Eugh! Peasants!" And Cranes has that particular element of snobbishness all over them. And in stores such as Gamlin's, there is so much choice, and so many people asking you questions about what you're looking for that there is a small element of intimidation. That's not their fault; it's a symptom of their dedication to their field. In Pencerdd Cyf though, you have the perfect balance. The reverence for the instruments and the knowledgability that comes with it is there, but there's no sense of "us insiders, you outsiders". Instead, there's an atmosphere of community in the store; an atmosphere that fosters musicianship. If I could combine the service here with the stock of Cranes, you might just have the perfect music store.
