Beach is also very well maintained: did not see any trash on the beach. Will definitely come again when visiting Savannah and Tybee Island.

The great thing about the paid parking on the island is that once you pay for an amount of parking time, you can park at any of the pay to park areas...if say, like us, you started at one end of the island, but ended up wanting to drive back to the other end. My favorite of the two coastal forts we visited on our trip…read more Fort Pulaski is in fine condition minus the damaged walls in certain locations where signs of battle are still visible. The ranger talk was particularly animated and informational. Fascinating that this was Robert E. Lee's first post after graduating from West Point as an assistant engineer, but he left before completion of this Third System fort. He returned as General Lee in 1860 and proclaimed, "Colonel, they will make it very warm for you with shells from that point but they cannot breach at that distance." But, due a new type of rifled cannon, it took only 30 hours for Confederate soldiers to surrender the fort. For the remainder of the war it primarily served as a staging post for soldiers entering and leaving the war as well as a jail. The location on Cockspur Island is rugged beautiful and you can look north towards Hilton Head Island. it is surrounded by a moat and there are many displays in the interior of the fort and you can walk all around the upper parapet to get lovely views of the area. There are several stairways to reach the upper level, but keep children in hand since there are no railings on the top (inside). As an aside, I had never heard of Casimir Pulaski, but he is the father of the American cavalry and everyone in Illinois is well acquainted because they honor him with a school holiday. To quote Lin Manuel Miranda, "Immigrants, they get the job done." There were many human touches still part of the fort, from hand and foot prints in the bricks to graffiti left by soldiers who lived here. Definitely a great spot to visit just outside of Savannah.

As soon as you step out there you get that relaxing coastal feeling and it is hard not to slow down and enjoy it. My kids and I had fun ankle deep in the cool April water. We spent time walking up and down the shoreline, listening to the waves roll in, and just taking it all in. The beach felt clean and well kept, and there was plenty of space to spread out without feeling packed in. It made it easy to relax whether you wanted to sit back in a chair, play with the kids, or just wander along the water. The atmosphere really stands out here. It has that perfect mix of family friendly and laid back beach town energy. You see people fishing, kids playing, and others just soaking up the sun. It never felt overwhelming, just a great steady vibe all around. It is also a great spot if you like simple beach activities. Whether it is swimming, shell hunting, or just dipping your feet in the water, everything feels easy and enjoyable. Watching the waves and the open water was easily one of the highlights of the day. Overall this is the kind of place you can spend hours at without even realizing it. Beautiful scenery, relaxing atmosphere, and just an all around great experience. Sunset was definitely the time to visit this gorgeous beach. We got plenty of great photos and got to watch a guy kite surf too. The classic here is the tybee beach. I mean it's a beach…read morethat's it. Not much activities going on there. We flew a kite, played ball and sand castle with our toddler. It's neat. There are people who choose to stay here instead of Savannah, in the houses there. I guess If chilling by the beach is what you prefer most it's a good option. Can't believe I forgot to rate the Tybee Island Pier from a few months ago, but here we go. I was…read morein the Savannah area in late June and since I haven't been to an East Coast beach in probably 5-6 years I knew I needed to smell some salt water and absorb some beach vibes. My wife and I headed here around 11:30AM and after a little bit of a struggle snagging some parking, we were able to take a nice walk. Like most popular little beach areas, this place is pretty crowded but not so much that you want to avoid it at all costs. We walked up to the boardwalk area and took the long walk down the pier, it was really nice being able to be so far out without getting wet (we had a flight to catch, though I would of loved having a swim). The pier itself with full of families taking photos, people taking a walk, and the end was a fishing area where you could actually rent a pole, buy some bait, and enjoy some time sitting down and trying to catch something. We spent maybe a half hour or so strolling the boardwalk which also has a big room with some food options (ice cream included), before heading back to the car and heading down to the airport. Overall, Tybee Island Pier is a nice place to spend an afternoon and has plenty of activities to keep the whole family happy. At the time I was visiting, I thought I was moving here so we kind of rushed through what we did, but since I ended up NOT moving to Savannah I sure do look forward to flying out and taking this city in a bit at some point.

We took a lovely charter boat ride at sunset. We had such a great time speaking with our captain…read moreand hearing his stories. He was very knowledgeable about the area and pointed out history and things that we were particularly interested in. We saw tons of dolphins along the way which made my night. The ride was relaxing with stunning views. The staff checking us in and juggling our reservation, Peyton was great. They called and offered to adjust our time to maximize our sunset experience. After our ride, we got to ask questions and learn about the burger boat and how cool that operation is. We look forward to coming back with our kids for the fossil tour.

Fairly walkable (once you GET TO the island), cute restaurants and bars, touristy shops, and a nice long strip of pretty clean beachfront. A museum and a lighthouse to visit as well. Fresh seafood to eat at pretty much every restaurant. I loved my initial afternoon visit to the island, but I was enchanted by my weeklong stay on Tybee. It was beautiful and relaxing and I am glad I opted to stay on the island and travel in to the city as I wanted rather than the other way around. Though both have their plus sides!

Lazaretto Creek Park Fishing Pier is located right outside of Tybee Island and is about a…read moretwenty-minute drive from downtown Savannah. I think that due to the distance from Savannah, this pier does not get a lot of usage compared to others in the area. The pier side of the creek also contains a boat ramp about a one-half mile from the pier, with the pier situated at the end of the road. There are no public facilities or running water at the pier, with two portable restrooms the only structures located there. While fishing, there are great views of the Lazaretto Creek Bridge. Visible on the other side of the creek are several fishing and charter boats, jet skiers, kayakers and several restaurants. In between catching fish, activity from these businesses is more than enough to keep you occupied while enjoying the picturesque views. It is never too busy at the pier, with weekend traffic consisting of about ten people. Consider Lazaretto Fishing Pier if you desire a peaceful and scenic fishing experience.
