I've been a member of this gym for close to two years. (Jiu Jitsu) This gym has a very welcoming culture. Everyone has a place here, whether your goal is to win gold medals, meet new people, get in shape, or just try something new out. The instructors are very knowledgeable and engaged in the content that they're teaching. There are classes at many times throughout the day. The facilities are extremely well maintained, and the leaders of the gym are constantly making upgrades/improvements. Terrible and manipulative establishment. They coax you into signing a 1 year deal and if you try to cancel before that, you have to buy out your contract for 3 months value. Thats $450 if you want to cancel early. I moved away and they still wont let me cancel unless I spend $450. They refuse to talk on the phone and say they will only communicate through email. They will stop responding to your emails if they dont like what you're saying. You cant speak to a manager. Its ridiculous. Im 2 months over my 12 month contract at this point and they are still telling me I need to pay 3 months value in order to get out of it. Insane! read more

Both my son and daughter attend Memphis Judo & Jiu-Jitsu and they love it! We have been very pleased with the service of management and with the quality of teachers. We are always greeted with a smile. They are organized with the way they conduct classes and take their time to instruct the kids and help them master their skills. I love how they give the kids the extra push and encouragement they need to feel confident in what they are learning. I signed up my son for Jiu-Jitsu and he enjoyed it for three months. The instructors were good. He just had a lot on his plate with sports and school and something had to give. That's when things went downhill. I notified the owner that my son would not continue with the classes. I told him I would pay out the month. I signed a contract and completed the required three months of the six month agreement. The owner says I owe three months after the date my son stopped going. He is charging my credit card monthly. So under his logic if my son stopped going in the sixth month I would owe him three more months? Stay away. I made a mistake and don't want others to follow in my footsteps. I should have read the reviews talking about the contract before signing it. read more

I got my a** kicked...in a good way! I bought an unlimited 30-day Groupon deal back in December thinking that it would be good to add variety to my half marathon training. I started kickboxing classes last night and it was challenging but fun. The staff & class participants were very friendly. The instructor, Ben, checked in regularly to make sure that I was comfortable. We talked briefly & he encouraged me to drop into as many classes as I wanted during the 30 days. He was very welcoming! The gym was a bit warm but nothing too unbearable. Class started with laps around the room, a few push-ups and plyo then we went straight into the good stuff for about 45 minutes. One veteran class participant noticed that I was new & guided me through all of the drills to make sure I got the most of my workout. He even got a few chuckles out of my unique punching skills! After class, I talked to another class participant & she had nothing but great things to say about the kickboxing class. She's been attending for a few months & is seeing great results. Bonus: If you're not sure about committing to the membership, they offer a week pass. No need to rush out to but sparing equipment because have everything that you need for class. The instructor will show you how to wrap your wrist & how to punch correctly. Don't be shy...ASK! I'm not looking to lose weight but the strength training offered will be very helpful in attaining my running goals. I can't wait to go to my next class tomorrow! read more

First of all blake (the manager) lied about contract and easy cancel no questions asked. You have to live more than 25 miles away from their location or have a doctors note to cancel once you join. After you cancel they harass you by text message. I asked them to stop and they sent the same message to me 5 times in a roll after I asked them to stop. I had to block them. I will not recommend them for nothing!!! read more

I been going here over a year now and have lost a total of 40 pounds and going. but i also eat right. means no fried food red meats and eating after 4. regular gym did not work for me. like the fact they tell you what to due. i bought a polar active band so i know how many calories I'm burning every class its 1200 in 45 mins that really good! i would highly recommend coming here. you got to take the first step and this is a great one! read more

I chose this gym solely for convenience of location. I wish I had read the reviews. When you have a daily routine, you tend to go to kickboxing classes at the same time. This means you usually have the same instructor. The first class was OK, but by the 3rd class it was clear that the instructor didn't deviate from his script. I attended classes for almost 3 months. There was little variety and no attention to - or correction of -technique. There are better kickboxing schools with more challenging and creative workouts that don't obligate you to financial contracts with 3rd party outside/out of state institutions. read more

The management at Memphis Judo & Jiu Jitsu has been unwilling to help my family members resolve billing issues with this ethically questionable company. This place is an absolute scam. Did the free kickboxing class and decided to sign up for the 6 month membership. Every class felt like the same routine and I wasn't learning anything new. The instructors were basically just getting paid to make us do half a workout. 3 months in I broke my foot and couldn't finish my last 3 months of the membership. I didn't make a big deal about it and just sucked up the fact that I lost 3 months worth of classes. My 6 month membership ended and the 7th month I checked my bank account to find out that they stopped taking money out. Or so I thought. The "consecutive" charges stopped for the first month out of the 6 month membership but then proceeded taking money out of the account every month after that. I thought I was clear and done. Never once was I contacted after my 6 months was up to ask if I wanted to continue taking classes there. I haven't been back since I broke my foot and all they've done since then is take out almost $1,500. This is one of the most poorly managed fitness centers I have ever been to. I wouldn't recommend to anyone and would advise you to STEER CLEAR of this establishment. They're are SO many places in the area that are so much better than this. read more

In the movie "Karate Kid", there are 2 types of instructors. You have Mr Miyagi and then there is the Cobra Kai Sensei. The lead youth instructor at Memphis Judo Brazillian Jui-jitsu uses the "Sensei" style. If my son wanted to be screamed at, he would have joined the Marines. Then again he's only five. Have your attorney review the contract before you sign up. My sister and her daughter signed up for a six month kick boxing contract with a specific start and end date. With an agreement for 6 months of payment deductions from her checking account specified, she believed she was signing a term contract. My niece broke her foot halfway through the 6 month contract so did not return. The 6 months ended, my sister checked to make sure no deductions were withdrawn the month after her contract ended, and there wasn't so she thought it was over. A year later she found the company has continued to deduct from her account to the amount of close to $1,600. Watch the manager to make sure he doesn't check additional boxes/commitments as you sign up. When confronted, he said "Sorry, can't help you or refund any money." Horrible customer service and severe ethics issues. Find another gym that is more on the up and up. read more

I have been training brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) for almost a year now at both of MJJJ's locations (Midtown and Bartlett) and can't rate them highly enough. This a reality based martial arts gym! You will not find any bogus karate stuff here. You can get a great workout with fitness kickboxing (and burn 1,000 calories an hour!) or get more serious with their grappling (BJJ and Judo) and striking arts (MMA, Boxing, and Muay Thai). If you want a fun and intense workout that will teach you how to either break someone's arm or land a knockout punch then this is the place to go. I should mention that I've found MJJJ very friendly to beginners since the most advanced practitioners are also the ones that know how to control their submissions. The instructors are excellent and if they see you are dedicated and willing to invest time in their martial art they will invest time in you. For anyone looking to get into shape and train in the combat arts, you won't find a better place. read more

Don't throw away your money to this health-hazard, money-sucking gym! Dave, the owner, did not let us out of our one-year contract after sufficient, personal reasons that we had no control over. For 6 months, we continued to pay over $170 each month even though we did not attend one single class. I asked him, even begged him, to let us out of our contract. He said that he was running a business. Even big business gyms let you out of contracts if you request it in writing. Long story short, we had moved and I stopped the automatic payments through my bank. Unfortunately, Dave partners with a company (Member Solutions) that basically bullies customers into paying when they just can't anymore. We have been harassed by this company every day with phone calls and emails. When we moved and submitted our "proof" that we moved (my husband's military orders and our new lease agreement), they needed more "proof" that we were acutally married and demanded to see a marriage license before they cancelled our contract. We faxed them our marriage license. They said they never got it. Of course, during this time, we are being charged late fees for not paying even though I have stated that we have moved and demand to cancel our contract. We scanned and emailed them our marriage license again. Wouldn't you know it, we actually got an email back from the billing supervisor stating that our account is still open because she did not see an attachment. What's funny about all this, is that she actually replied to us with the original email we sent with the marriage license still attached! And yes, you guessed it, they still haven't cancelled my account and are still charging me late fees. Memphis Judo is a scam. All he wants is his money and they all could care less about the real human factors that we all experience with life changes. Finally, on the subject of the gym itself--it smells horribly of dirty feet. My son got ringworm from it and I don't think he ever really cleans the mats. I have watched kids start their class right after a full group of 20 bare foot men used that exact mat with their sweat dripping every where. They all exit and here come the kids... read more

I've been kickboxing for almost a year, and MJJ is ok. The schedule is great for someone with a working schedule, and some of the instructors are really good. Blake, Trundle, Dr. James, and Tyler are my favorite....they take the time to kick your butt and make sure you are practicing proper technique. My all-time favorite is Urban Fitness Kickboxing though. All of the instructors at Urban Fitness are fabulous. UFK instructors are very welcoming and they know their stuff. read more
