It had an eclectic selection of art from various artists, including a few that I really loved. I walked in and fell in love with a painting done by Annabelle Meacham. Her style was new to me and the colors were vibrant and very attractive.There were quite a few of her works in different areas of the gallery. Jay, who owns and runs the gallery, was delightfully well informed about the art displayed there. He was exceptionally friendly and spent quite a bit of time talking with us on various subjects. My fiancé was looking specifically for riablo, of which Jay had many to choose from. In the end, we purchase a lovely little riablo for a fair price. We were on vacation so it is unlikely we will return, but if we do get to Memphis again we will definitely visit Jay's gallery again. I highly recommend his gallery to anyone living in or visiting Memphis! It is a true treasure!

The play was about the holiday, of course, but also how Christmas is celebrated in several different Latin American countries. The Evergreen Theater is located on Poplar, across from India Palace restaurant. The theater is small, but clean and cozy. side note: restrooms passed, very clean The musical was awesome! It was very lively, and everyone seemed to have fun. The musical was mainly in Spanish, but it fit really well, and there were parts and explanations in English here and there. I liked that both languages were intertwined and it made no one feel alienated. Even if you didn't know the words, the actors did well and you could put two and two together with a lot of the stories. My Spanish luckily isn't that far out of tune, so I understood more of it than I thought I would. I thought the origin stories for the piñata and poinsettia were neat. The piñata was originally a symbol of destroying your sins, with the seven points representing the seven deadly sins, and the poinsettia referring to a lesson that any gift given with love will always be acceptable to Him. I'll give this one a rating: Christmas in many lights. Holidays are all about traditions and coming together. It's always important to embrace both our similarities and differences, but also to let someone else's stories have their time in the light. Definitely recommend this one

It's a beautiful 70 degree weather this February 2, 2019...So the plunge this year won't be so frigid...lol. A must attend event every year...!!! 5 bucks. What a deal. The Special Olympics of Greater Memphis does such wonderful work and their mission (as stated on their website) is "to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community." The Polar Bear Plunge raises money for them by having hundreds of waaaaaay braver people than me head over to Mud Island River Park and plunge into the Wolf River. It looked like fun...and people were lining up...but I just watched from the sidelines because...I'm a chicken. And a weeny, and I don't like to be cold...or wet. Maybe next year! Oh, and people get really dressed up! There's the Golden Plunger Award for the best costume! I loved watching groups in themes. Don't forget to arrive early so you can vote in the People's Choice portion of the Chili Cook-Off! It really is a full day of fun (donut eating contest, good music, cupcakes)...and you're benefitting a great cause! Win win!! :)

I refer to it as the Memphis Redbird ( much like the Bluebird in Nashville) where songwriters and song lovers alike can congregate and mingle in marvelous original music. Home to the Memphis Songwriters Association monthly meetings, Mark Parsell has been and is acting president of the longest consistently run grass roots songwriters association in Memphis that was founded by Estelle Acton (the AX in STAX) along with several others in 1973. The all ages events (with some occasional exceptions) is run just like a house concert where listeners are allowed to tip whatever they can afford ($5 to $10 per person suggested by me) and bring their own drinks or donate to the house beer/wine fund. The shows are always early 7-9 which is perfect for after dinner dates or an early rendezvous before a big night out on the town. Check out South Main Sounds!!!!!

Showcasing many known Productions like The Wizard of Oz Annie & The Hobbit just to name a few. These plays have always been well produced & well casted thanks to their director & his crew who always have kept the show going smoothly. The props & backdrops were were well designed & crafted. The backdrops I found most impressively designed were the backdrops for Wizard of Oz when they were doing the scene with The Munchkins. The props just added a great realism to the scene they were design to be used in. The lighting is fair for a fair for a small town theather as I wouldn't expect the same quality you'd find at the Orpheum or GPAC. Their sound system is adequate & I can hear each performers lines & the music with clarity. As I said kept simple & not sacrifing in the way of ticket prices. Low ticket prices & while keeping great quality in productions is a key to this Performing Arts Center success next to their casting dm& play director. I do admit they could use better seating it offers some decient comfort unlike other places who offer better comfort to enjoy a long production. But let Harrell Theatre wow you with their new production of Steel Magnolis coming in February. Enjoy the show. Indeed the productions at the Harrell theatre and we have treasured this venue as intimate and cordial for any type of production. The phrase, "Not a Bad Seat in the House" comes to mind. And the venue often has had some really special talent in their programs over the years which have been truly excellent and community building.
