Very nice market and I recommend you visit when in San Sebastián. It opened in 1870. There are some stores with olives and gourmet products, but it's mostly butchers and fishmongers. There's also a huge shop with bacalao, or dried, salted cod. Outside, there are produce and flower markets. There is also a great cheese shop outside. A central part of old town. read more

La Bretxa lies at the point where the besieging English and Spanish forces entered the City during the Peninsular War. The name means "the breach". The main attraction is the Market includes both the underground and outside areas. You'll also find a modern mall inside, which kind of spoiled my "La Boqueria" expectations. Gayle and I were also here on Monday and the Market was a little slow. We also stopped by early the next day, but somehow I still wasn't feeling the culinary love. But since the star chefs of the Basque Country apparently shop here for the freshest of the fresh, what the hell do I know? What Gayle and I really did enjoy was hanging out at La Bretxa Plaza and enjoying a beer at Bar Korneer at one end. There was also a well stocked newsstand, fun people watching, and it was a great way to spend part of a sunny and warm October afternoon. read more

Fun! Tiny! Tiny fun! Probably the tiniest Mercado ever. it's right smack in the middle of San Sebastian and waterfront. But it is so tiny!!! it's in the basement of a shopping plaza! The mall/ shops upstairs are sparse. But once you get down, the goodies are all stacked together. The meat? Cure meat? Fillet di bacala, cheeses, sausages! A lot of sausages. Some flowers. Langostinos! A lot is here. But so is a ton of really really good and cheap tapas bars right next door. I got some meat and cheeses but didn't get the seafood and meat. Would be fun to cook though. But you get such fresh cooked ones: it defeats the purpose. Prices are reasonable! The flower shop upstairs is my favorite. it is insanely beautiful! Roses in many colors including a black rose! Smells divine! And supposed to last 60 days! The gelato shop was good too. The meat/sausages, jarmon! Pretty cheap as well! it's fun to walk through. Even better if you are here and have a kitchen to cook! It's all meat, meat and more meat! Offal! Seafood! Cheese! Meattt! read more

I don't know what we would have done without La Bretxa being nearby our apartment during our stay. The market downstairs was a sheer joy to wander around. We made our own Basque recipes for dinner a few times and it was great to pop over and pick up whatever we needed... bacalao and lagostinas, Idiazabal cheese, choricero peppers etc... all for very good prices. The Lidl supermarket downstairs was perfect for everything else. read more

Authentic & beautiful market down the escalator of the mall-looking-like complex. Fresh fruit, baked goods, meats, vegetables. Worth a stop for some quality & fresh foods in between all the greasy pinxtos. read more

It's an underground open market full of excellent seafood, meat, produce and anything else one could want from a cooking and eating perspective. There's even an underground supermarket for the more mundane things. A solid place for fine foods. read more
