This was already on our Madrid itinerary so of course we had to check it out. The market was especially convenient for us since it was only about a 12-minute walk from our hotel. We ended up enjoying it so much that we came back two days in a row! To say we were overwhelmed the first time we walked in would be an understatement. Every sense immediately goes into overdrive it honestly felt like being a kid in a candy store. Everywhere you look there's something delicious calling your name! We started at La Casa del Bacalao, where the selection of tapas was incredible. There truly is something for everyone here. After that, we made our way over to Arzabal Market, located directly across from Bacalao for a few glasses of wine. My boyfriend also ordered his very first jamon sandwich there an official Spain milestone! Lol. From there, we stopped at Quesoba for a few slices of cheese before capping off the evening with a couple of refreshing tintos de verano from El de San Miguel. By the end of the night, we were absolutely stuffed! A little warning for first time visitors: it's surprisingly easy to overeat in Spain! Tapas may look small, but they definitely add up faster than you think. After a few stops, those little bites start hitting differently. The atmosphere is lively, the food options seem endless, and it's a fantastic way to sample a variety of Spanish flavors all under one roof. If Madrid is your next stop, make sure Mercado de San Miguel is on your list. Run, don't walk! You'll thank me later.

So much fun going around the whole market and looking at everything they offer. Definitely a must visit when in Madrid. So many tapas/small bites to enjoy. I loved trying the different olives, cheeses, croquetas, tortilla, and so much more. It gets very crowded so be ready to navigate around tons of people. I think that was my only con. Everything else is great.

Went here on a recent trip to Spain and loved the vibe--such a lively spot for a tapas crawl. As vegetarians, we were pleasantly surprised by the variety: different kinds of bruschetta, olives, croquettes, cheeses, and more. Plenty of wine and beer options too It's super convenient to sample a range of flavors all under one roof. Definitely worth checking out!

This is one of the Madrid's most famous markets with beautiful iron and glass structure and design that offers a lively, gourmet atmosphere. It was first opened in 1916 and then transformed into a modern food hall in 2009, while keeping the historic structure intact. Inside, you'll find more than 20-30 stalls offering tapas, seafood, pastries, wine, and regional specialties from across Spain. It's a nice place to wander, snack, and try small bites from different vendors, all in one bright and bustling space.

Overall: 3 stars One of the better food markets I've been to where the food quality is much tastier and its not all looks. This market though is absolutely packed to the point where it is quite difficult to maneuver, so it is not a recommendation to dogpile on given how many other places have equally good if not better food. (Crab Roll: B) - Imagine the combination of a lobster roll with a california roll, two tasty things. The concept is good and the crab is a blend of imitation and real crab. However, the food is ice cold and the brioche could benefit from being toasted. (Dumplings: B) - Eight flavors each with their own unique sauce and accompaniments. I generally like the concept with intresting blends like hoisin duck or prawn mayo, with the wrappers being thin and well made. I think this type of dish would benefit from being at a full service restaurant that is able to serve this made to order hot and enforce clean plating as the skills are there. (Churros: D) - Was so intrigued to try three colored churros which reminds me of larger pockys, but I wish the flavor of each color were stronger; an intense matcha or strawberry flavor churro would hit hard. Unfortunately, all of them tasted like white chocolate as the only note, and I found the dough to be overcooked because it lost its interior doughiness. Food: E Presentation: E Price: E Atmosphere: -1 Service: E Menu: +1 Insta/Yelp/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

Stopped by Arzabal Market to try their patata bravas in spicy sauce. You cannot go wrong with deep fried potatoes with spiced sauce and it was good. Just like the entire Mercado San Miguel this place seemed touristy and also prices were extremely high for the small portions. Good food, steep prices and good atmosphere in the market filled with tourists.

Awesome market and food scene. Open late in downtown Madrid. Huge assortment of all types of traditional cuisines. Had a traditional tuna smoked with a quail, egg and caviar, and also dried some awesome chicken wings. Definitely worth a stop and come hungry. Super lively environment with stalls of all different types of cuisine. Some traditional pintxos and other specialties. It's all here.

Loved the cleanliness. Multiple drinks and tapas. Whatever you want they have. Easy food stop. Try the sangria and steak. Mmmmmmm.

If you can tolerate the crowds, you are in for a treat! First suggestion ... Go for dinner. It will be less crowded, but more fulfilling. Read on to understand why ... This market has it all. Meats (prepared a variety of ways), seafood, pasta, cheeses, desserts, and drinks. You will not be able to sample everything they offer. But it is certainly fun trying!!! Out of the many things I tried, there is one item that was completely amazing and that was the the BBQ pork in a bao bun. Find it and order several before they run out! But the food is only a portion of the experience. Surrounding you are visitors from all over the world seeking food, drink, and ... conversation. And I found great enjoyment engaging with so many individuals throughout my visit here. Although we initially went for dinner, we stayed at least 4 hours because of the great conversations we were having. So here is an important tip ... before you grab any food, go find a table somewhere in the interior of the market (not the perimeter) and plant yourself. Even if it's only one stool, others beside you will eventually leave and the rest of your party can migrate from standing to sitting. But as this happens, go ahead and start buying some food and drink ... and engage with the visitors around you! So much fun! I can't wait to return!

Crowded but for good reason! Think Quincy Market in Boston or Borough Market in London. Several small food booths selling a wide variety of all the most popular Madrid foods and drinks. We got a few quick bites before moving on to the rest of our day. Would go back to try more!

Always appreciate each and every kiosk at this beautiful Mercado! Can be tricky to find a spot to stand/sit but truly worth the visit! I am a fan Suggestion: Do not go if in a rush. Take your time and make new friends.

Sooooo many things to choose from! Super busy place! Tried the bread & cheese shop, the empanada place & the sangria bar! You'll be lucky if you found a spot to suit! We happened to be there on may 1 which is Labor Day so everyone was out!

Amazing and amazingly crowded market full of delicious foods of a wide culinary variety. So much wonderful food and enough time or stomach capacity, lol. They even have restrooms. Though I've been more impressed with Spain for the fact that they have more bathrooms and water fill stations. Do know you need to show receipt of purchase from Mercado to use the restroom so get one from the merchants or pay 1€

Although in a fancier neighborhood this neighborhood spot is down-to-earth and accessible to all. A lot less touristy than markets closer to Sol. A florist, bakeries and house/kitchenware shops round out the assortment. A few restaurants too, notably the famous "Casa Dani" is located here, most recently made popular (to non-local foodies) by Netflix's "Somebody Feed Phil". I arrived on a Monday morning around 10:30am so the atmosphere was pretty low key with mostly locals picking up groceries, grabbing a bite to eat, with a couple local tour guides bringing around 1-2 tourists on personalized tours. Vendors were still setting up/unloading some items for the day. It was fun to check out the variety of items at each stall, and pick up a couple food souvenirs. Opening hours are 9am-8pm Mon-Friday and 9am-2:30pm Saturday, closed Sundays. Vendors take cash and card in most cases though always good to bring a little extra cash for smaller purchases with local vendors.

I was lucky enough to come on a Sunday during the Tapapies cultural festival. There were performers outside, and plenty of activity and great food inside. Each stall had a special "dish" for the festival in addition to their usual offerings. The prices were VERY attractive, almost "happy-hour-ish" where you could get a tapas/beer for 2-3 euro pp. Not bad at all. I think I spent 2 hours here and maybe spent 15 euro total? Came back the next day for a repeat lunch - around 11am - and nothing was open except for a butcher stall and two fishmongers. I think some places started opening up around 2pm, but then they were closing an hour later, so very easy to miss some of these places during the early part of the week - if they're even open at all. You'd have better luck for dinner if you came around 7-8pm. The downside to this is with fewer markets open, those that are open do tend to get crowded, and patrons tend to hang out and take it slow. TL;DR. Great food, great prices, larger and not as crowded as other Mercados, and not as touristy.
