Love stopping here for shopping, fresh juice and some tacos while in TJ. Parking is reasonable and prices over all not bad. Not the cheapest in TJ, but having all the options in once place is nice. Pro tip: have pesos ready for prepaid parking at kiosks. Once by restrooms and one near north entrance. Maybe more, but only two I'm familiar with. Multiple exits for prepaid tickets, but only one if you don't have exact change. read more

There are lots of great deals and some not so great, but with the convenience of finding it all in one large shopping area. The individual stands offer everything from produce, sweets, mixed drinks, spices, party supplies, souvenirs, baked goods, even some prepared meals at a few sit-down dining areas. If you have time, and patience, you can find better prices from different vendors by shopping around. But mostly they have pretty similar pricing. We did notice some wholesale items at the party store had higher prices than one would get from buying at chain stores, like Calimax or Soriana. But the good thing about this place is you can get all your shopping done without driving to multiple stores. Definitely showing up earlier will ensure you find a parking spot! read more

The market is fantastic. This is the place to go if you are in the market for kitchenware, herbs, spices, home improvement items, and other random things. They are open to bargaining and have fantastic deals. There was plenty of parking when we arrived in the morning, which was a blessing. Parking may become difficult after 10 or 11 in the morning. A great stop to shop around for items or foods! They have many stores but a notable one for us was El Texano where you can buy drinks that they make right in front of you including cantaritos, palomas, micheladas, and juices. A cantarito for us cost about $13 USD and you can keep the cup! Great for walking around the nice little marketplace. read more

It was my first time going here, so I didn't know what to expect. They have a paid parking lot available, so luckily we found a spot. Some of the other drivers can be quite rude though- honking at you when you are just waiting for the driver to back out. I love going to markets in different countries, but this one was a bit disappointing. I was hoping for more food vendors, but there weren't that many. There were only vendors selling fruit cups and bunuelos, so we bought a mango one for me and cactus one for him. The cactus one was better because it was more fresh. I thought the mangoes were too ripe. We walked around and there were stores selling cheese, produce, and Mexican candy. I needed to stock up on Mexican candy, so we bought a few of our favorites. The total was much higher than when I last bought some, so I'm not sure if the prices went up, or if this market is just more expensive. read more

Overpriced. Went over from USA to get a cheap piñata but their prices are the same. They did have the fruit-era on every corner which was nice. Candy packages were around 5-$20 depending on the size. Overall, I would of just purchased them in the US to save the gas and trip. read more

Actually I kind of hate this market. Four stars for kind of hate. It does have an amazing selection of peppers, both fresh and dried, beans, and a zillion other dried unrecognizable things. Exotic fruits and pastes galore, pinatas and other cheap wares for the the kitchen, and a nice cheese shop that I did like. This is where TJ folks go to shop on the weekends, and if I lived there I would too. It's not a tourist spot by any means, although it is interesting to see. The negativity I feel about it relates to the whole parking situation, which is about as bad as it gets. The whole place is a city block with the shops on the perimeter facing in. Parking is in the middle, with entrances centered on all sides. They let you in. They let everyone in. Then you have to find parking, which means waiting to be the lucky driver who is just behind the other guy who is too far ahead to try to back up and snag the spot that the person to the right is attempting to vacate. For me, this took just over 30 minutes. They let you in, knowing there are no spaces available, because parking is charged by the time you spend there. Time spent looking for a space comprised half of my fee. Aside from that this is a very interesting farmers market with permanent vendors, a few restaurants, and lots of people watching to do. Sample the cheese if you go. read more

Amazing place. Great for tourist but still has that local vibe. Parking gets bad so arrive early. There are so many places to eat, buy Mexican candy, cheeses and souvenirs. We ate El Rincón del Oso and the food was amazing! We went to the candy store next door and the staff was so nice. You're able to sample some of the food before purchase. Was there this past weekend and without a doubt it's the piñata and candy mega spot. With that being said shop around prices vary depending on the shops that are ethical or not. The ones on the north side seemed to be more reasonably priced $10 piñatas large. $20 for assorted mexican candy bag of 6 pounds. Also this place has authentic chilis and spices from all over mexico, cajeta or caramel $4 for 1.5 lbs, all kinds of cheese, fruits, vegetables, food, churros, coconuts, corn, honey, exotic tropical fruits, copper pots, a huge curios assortment, and mexican dish wear. So, It was our first trip down to Tijuana and like a majority of tourists, we opted to see the most popular spots that have been raved about and commented on by other tourists. This brought us to Mercado Hidalgo. My previous experience to similar markets like this would only be in relation to other Mexican cities. I've ended up taking a shuttle out from our hotel with a guide, so this would be the first where we were winging it. With that being said, with our experience alone, I found this to be a total waste of time. The market has a ton of stores inside, which in total transparency probably has 4 of the same stalls over and over and over again. There's fruit stalls, dried goods, candy and snacks and random cookware stores. The few food stalls are hidden in the hallways which actually smelt nice but seating was super limited. The one thing I'd recommend is the cup of fruit. We chose one with young coconut rinds, and mango with chamoy. Really liked how fresh the mangos were and found the coconut to be super crunchy and unique! Overall, I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here unless you're here to shop for things specifically, I think we were hoping for more local vendors selling handmade goods. read more

Be careful there prices are higher than anywhere else in TJ. Example a pinata cost 250+. If go to dulfis dulceria across the street they start at 145+. That's a big difference especially in Mexico. The prices in this mercado are only higher because most of us Hispanics from USA and tourists come here. read more

This place is packed with little stores selling everything. We ended up getting a bunch of candy, some medicine, some cheese, a copper pot and a big wooden thing to stir the cooking food. We had just ate so we didn't eat any of the delicious looking food spots here. But we will next time for sure. We're definitely coming back to get some mole negro paste. A little spot had about 10 different kinds. Nothing like some delicious chicken mole on top of some Mexican rice. read more

This place is AMAZING! Every time I come to baja, I have to stop by. When coming in you have to drive in and obtain a ticket, anywhere you purchase anything within the mercado, they will validate parking, you still have to pay a surcharge of 5 or 10 pesos which is literally $.25 or $.50. You can find anything in here. I pick up cheese, called Rey Del Castillo. Its freaking delicious and I usually cant find it anywhere else. I also pick up dried mango. Peanuts covered in chili and lemon. MMMM fresh coconuts for $1.00 they open that sucker up and take out the flesh, which they place in a bag. they have a little stand with lemons, chili, salt, and chammoy. Its awesome! I go crazy and go on a eating binge... no diet or fasting of any kind when I come here. You find piñatas for $8, all sorts of candy. Fruit that you usually dont see cheap in the states. Again, I have no mercy on the amazingly fresh fruits. I go crazy and dont stop till I cross the border. I bring my daughter here and she loves it. We find the Kinder eggs here. Those are difficult to find but are a childhood memory for me when visiting my grandmother in Mexico City. Wanna experience some real Mexican culture? Come here! I stumbled upon this place after eating at a taco shop across the street. I was in the mood to walk around and explore and I'm so glad I did. There's so many things to look at and great things to pick up here. It's a VEGANS paradise. Fresh and delicious produce of all kinds everywhere you look. Lots of candy shops and places where can satisfy any craving you may have. I will definitely be stopping here next time I'm in TJ- I found a stand that makes the BEST Clamatos and I'm hooked.
