I'd heard about €10 cups of yogurt (something like that) & wanted to make sure I DIDN'T end up at these supermarkets. Our host did warn me that shopping at Mercadona would be "tricky". I wasn't sure what he meant until I went there myself. Prior to Mercadona, every supermarket I'd been to in the Americas & Asia had more or less been the same in terms of structure/system. At Mercadona - at least the 1 I went to, can't remember anymore which 1 it was - I noticed customers queueing up at the cashiers near the entrance with their merchandise, but the merchandise was nowhere to be found. Hehe. So I followed this guy to the elevator, & the elevator took us to the second floor. That's where the merchandise was. As I lined up to pay for my purchases, 1 of the workers asked me something (in Catalan). I said I didn't speak the language, & he asked me if my car was parked in the basement. I said no, & he directed me towards the line where I should be paying for my stuff. So I take it some Mercadonas are structured this way, I guess that's just their own system of organization. Mercadona did happen to have everything I needed, & offered them at good, affordable prices. I'd be happy to do my grocery shopping here again, next time I'm in Barcelona.

I kept butter in our mini fridge so we could pack butter sandwiches when we hiked around and didn't want to stop for food (also made good late night snacks with anchovy stuffed olives.) I bought Marcona almonds here for souvenirs- because they were better than the other Marconas I had tried. I also bought lots of other things to take home. Such fun to bring home food souvenirs! I am also a fan of Vichy Catalan- sparking water- which I could buy here in big bottles. Everything was delicious and was a good price. We used the little green plastic carts. If you want to use a metal grocery cart you must put a euro in to get it "loose"- and when you put it back you get your euro back. We ran into the same system in Utrecht. It must cut down on shopping cart theft. This store also has household cleaning items, makeup- pretty much anything you need. I highly recommend it.

Barrel wine. 0,94. nuff said…read more well, more can be said... my friend lives around the corner from here - and before we head out to the park or inside to just talk, we pop in here to stock up. down in the cellar, they have bottles of wine... but upstairs, they have these big barrels on tap. what my friend does is he keeps a couple of empty wine-sized bottles with a flip lid that you get at the chinese shop - in the freezer - and when he wants some wine, he goes down, has them refill the bottle. for less than a Euro. It was decent white wine. nothing earth shattering - but pleasant for an afternoon picnic in the park. it's a cute little neighborhood convenience store - bigger than a 7-11, but smaller than a caprabo. with a decent variety.

At Vins Xic Gourmet, their wine selection in the back room is especially good (see photos here & on their Facebook page). If you happen to find yourself staying on Carrer de Casp (which we did), this is a good neighborhood gourmet food place to visit, for just about anything you might need. Before you even fully walk into the store, stop for a glass of orxata and an ice cream. SO damn good. This Veritas is a bit larger than many and offers quite a nice variety of vegan/ vegetarian options. They also have a great selection of organic meats and fish, as well as some prepared foods. Like most organic markets, you pay for the quality of food, so while it's not cheap, it's not overpriced.

The majority of the staff seemed to speak fluent English as I heard a few speaking with non-Spaniards. I conversed in Spanish and the woman that helped me explained a couple of items I was not familiar with and then helped me with an aged manchego, a truffle pecorino, Jamon Iberico and variation of butifarra with pepper on the outside as well as a nice cold bottle of cava. The butcher meat looked incredible with a number of sausages and cuts that I would have loved to have the chance to cook up. This won't be for everyone, some people don't want to deal with not eating out and I get it, but if you want to have a quiet meal that is easy, come get some cured meats and a nice cava. If you've rented a house, come get some great looking cuts and make yourself a meal you won't forget.

The store is rather large, but from the entrance, one wouldn't think so. They have a great selection of food products and other household items. I picked up a baguette, some jamon (lol), brie and white cheddar cheese, potato chips, and a bottle of wine. Oh, and paper towels, dish soap, and a sponge. It was all pretty reasonably priced. The bread was freshly baked but I'm not sure from where. The jamon and cheese were great! And the brand of chips were pretty good. I scored with the bottle of wine as well. Overall, I was able to recreate a cafe meal for less than the cost at a cafe, with enough left over, except the bread and wine, for another lite meal. Overall, this is a great store to shop at. Much like my Albertson's at home, but better...way better!
