After a video consult, I was advised to collect a urine sample from my cat and bring it in Monday morning. I was up all through the night Monday, checking on him, finally got the sample at 9am, and rushed to catch the 11am ferry. The sailing was cancelled, so I didn't get across until 12:30. It was a four hour round trip. I called Coastland Monday morning before going to the ferry to confirm that this was indeed the way to proceed and that I had taken all the necessary steps to preserve the sample correctly. I delivered the sample to Coastland, clarified confusion with staff, and even went home to provide them more information from my computer. They told me they wouldn't run the test until Wednesday. When I checked in, I was stunned to learn they had discarded the sample entirely--because they hadn't seen my cat before, despite my mother‑in‑law, sister‑in‑law, and myself being loyal Coastland clients for over 30 years. After all the effort, loyalty, and trust, I was dismissed and treated without respect. This is not acceptable veterinary practice. I'm sharing this so others know: Coastland Veterinary discarded a critical sample after I went through extraordinary effort to deliver it, and their communication left me feeling gaslighted and humiliated. Our animals deserve better care, and so do we.

It's very rare you enjoy visiting the vets and we always feel good walking into the building. Robin rehabbed one of our dogs after she had extensive leg surgery and gave her such wonderful care. Our dog was terrified to go to her previous vet and has relaxed a ton in Robins care. When we brought our puppy in for her second set of shots I couldn't believe how much she immediately loved Joan. Both Robin and Joan have exceeded our expectations as vets and we are so happy to have found their clinic. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for competent and compassionate care. My experience and red flags that others should look for: 1) Website & Facebook page have no information as to who's responsible for the rescue. Who's behind the scene? No team names. No accountability 2) The audit on the website is from some random place in California (pretty sure it's the same place they get the dogs from) The link is broken so you can't verify. 3) Dogs all seem to be imported from California. Also she primarily only saves puppies to flip the costs. The owner complains about the third party transportation costs. But why can I adopt a dog from Taiwan that includes a flight & more health vetting included for less? There are also PLENTY of dogs right across the border in Seattle. 4) The quote Larissa gave me for a pup was 1000$. Mixed breed, not spayed/neutered, or fully vaccinated, despite their claim to spay and neuter all dogs on their website. Meaning we'd still have to pay another 500-700$ out-of-pocket to cover the rest of the initial costs. 5) After doing more research on other similar rescues, we thought the fee was too high. I offered to pay 800 and that we'd cover the remaining vet costs ourselves (which was still way too high, but I fell in love with the pup we met). Next I received a very aggressive text, email, and phone call from her telling me numerous times it was unacceptable and "not okay" that I questioned the fee or compared Big & Small to other rescues. There are reviews elsewhere about of her flipping a personality switch, so I was a bit prepared but same time I wasn't. I didn't mean to upset her by just asking a simple, innocent question. I had so much anxiety writing that email because I was terrified of the response I was going to get. There are so many ways she could have professionally handled it but she sadly chose to be aggressive and mean about it. 6) Larissa will only tell you about the adoption fee in a private email. I later found out that a lady and I were being quoted two different prices - 50$ difference for the same pup. 7) A quick google of Big & Small will have two top hits, the second is a Facebook page dedicated to outing this rescue. 8) There's a video on YouTube of the husband acting horribly towards a family who also questioned the adoption fees. Can be found with a little internet digging. 9) There is a CBC article about this business that's also worth a read. 10) If you look at Instagram and Facebook you'll notice Big & Small has zero outreach. I'm guessing because they aren't reputable and no other rescues or business will work with them. 11) The comments on their Facebook page are heavily censored. I have watched comments get deleted if people question a breed type listed as incorrect. Or Facebook will say there are a large number of comments, e.g. 40, but only 16 show up. 12) Initially I tried to give Larissa the benefit of the doubt. I emailed advice to help her rescue. I offered to do dog portraits as a fundraiser. I also asked for the Google form I filled out so I could reuse the text to quicker fill out adoption applications. I received no return communication, I'm guessing because I told Larissa we wouldn't be paying the 1k and so she crossed us off. So here I am. Bottom line is there are better and more friendly rescues in the area that don't treat rescue dogs as a profitable business or take advantage of people for money. Save yourself the stress by supporting a rescue elsewhere. To Larissa: People genuinely want to support rescue animals. Don't treat these people like the enemy just because they can't afford your insanely high and unfair adoption fees. If you're really a non-profit, your rescue needs more transparency. And just be nice to people. It's really not that difficult! Update: Larissa has blocked my Facebook for reviewing.

She had stopped using her litter box and going all over the house ( not like her at all ), she was confused and would become lost in our own home. She cried at night, almost every night and would stop when I called out to her and heard my voice. She cried during the day as well. She stopped wanting to go outside and completely stopped grooming. Sadly I knew her quality of life wasn't of quality at all. It was with great sadness and deliberation I booked an appointment to have her put down. It was heart wrenching and a difficult call to make. I also knew taking her in for a "check up" wasn't going to make everything better, due to her age and large changes in her behavior. At that time of booking I explained the purpose of my call. At no time did anyone at reception say what I could expect at the appointment or the costs associated with the procedure. It ended up being the most traumatic and devastating experience I've had as pet owner. I never want another person to go though what we experienced. Firstly, I came in hours before the apt to pick up a carrier as I didn't want to leave with an empty one and knew I would be grieving. At the actual apt the doctor came in and asked why I was there?? Wide eyed and with tears I said to have my cat put down. She then ask why? I went on to explain all the reasons I felt it was the right thing to do. She asked if I would be willing to do a blood panel, to see if medications or at home care would be considered. I knew in my heart my girl was tired and suffering, by this time was crying so hard my friend had to speak for me to reiterate my wishes. The room was tense and stressful. The doctor then sent in another person to talk about my pets remains and what I wanted to do with them?? Decisions that should have been discussed prior. I have never put an animal down before. I was shaking and crying asking what the costs were so I could make an informed decision ( while distraught ) She said, "Oh you want to know the costs??". Another person ( a 3rd ) came it to talk about costs. She then looked at my cat and said, " She still looks bright" ... Looking at my cat for a few seconds. She then said, "We just want to make sure this is what you want." Want I want? Of course it's not what I want..... My decision is what I feel is best for my animal that I know and love. The apt. was just horrific, these people are not trained in how to provide options without disrespecting or shaming the pet owner. My cat was stressed, I was hysterical. The whole event was so traumatic, I have not slept in 3 days and continue to relive the entire chain of events in my mind. Please never take your beloved animal to this clinic. Its certainly not the same lovely privately owned clinic it use to be.
