I was initially reluctant to use a wedding/event planner for several reasons - wanting to save money, being fairly crafty/creative myself and having confidence in handling on my own details in pursuing something less "traditional", and being pretty resourceful. Shortly into the planning process, I realized it was going to be harder than I thought. I then met Mandi Buckland of Element Design. What sealed the deal was her calm energy and diversity in events she's worked on (weddings, parties, festivals, including "green" fests/events). She was great in identifying several unique wedding location options in Southwest and Southern MI, including a fabulous barn, a garden, and a super cool lodge (we ended up at a mansion in Holland). When I asked her to design the invitations with a "modern art nouveau theme" using a peacock to match the theme of a mansion built in the early 1900s (not easy!) - she provided several fabulous sample designs within a short period of time. Our final invitations were really unique and fun! After our invites went out, I received an unexpected amount of of great feedback ("I love your invitations!" "They are so unique," etc.) and I could tell they made people look forward to the wedding. I felt like Mandi figured out my sense of my style quickly, and she was able to identify options that fit that were creative, cost-conscious (extra plus) and didn't compromise on quality. At the same time she was working with me, she was helping a friend design invitations for a wedding at the Drake Hotel in Chicago, so her range of work can be simple, arty/less traditional, to more traditional/upscale. Pretty impressive! Mandi is professional, efficient, super creative, and I would recommend her to anyone in Chicago, Detroit (or anywhere in between the two cities in Michigan or Illinois) who is planning a wedding in Southwest or Southern Michigan!

That is so helpful to a bride who is planning at all hours of the night (because, honestly, what bride doesn't plan at 2am?) - Alison is organized and thorough. I got all the information about pricing, albums, expectations and requests up front. Our initial meeting with Alison left us feeling completely comfortable in her hands since she was on top of her game. I never had to worry once we decided to utilize her talents! - Alison makes the pre-wedding and day of wedding run so smoothly. She helped me craft a pristine wedding schedule of events and was an expert at keeping us on track during the actual wedding without being bossy or pushy. She arrived on time and ready to shoot and kept the mood light and worry free! She even reminded me to eat (thanks Alison!) so I wouldn't pass out when walking down the aisle. She brought snacks with her, in case I didn't have any. During the day, she blended into the background and I barely even noticed her stealthily snapping shots during the ceremony and dinner. - Alison got my proofs back to me in a month and boy, are they STUNNING! The final product from our day is exactly what we wanted -- relaxed, candid, bright and thoughtful images of the best day of our lives. She caught every detail, every smile, every bouquet of flowers and edited the group down to 550 of the most beautiful pictures. I've just been skipping through them for the 5th time in a day and I am completely in love. Thrilled doesn't even begin to describe what I am about these pictures! I can't wait to pick out the photos I want for our album and work with Alison to create that heirloom piece. Meh. We went for my…read morehusbands holiday party. It was just not glam. A rickety tiny elevator ride up with tacky sheets as decor. It about summed up the experience. Luckily decor was much better when we reached our party room destination. Travelling apps were not terribly impressive but still tastyish. The bacon wrapped chicken on a skewer was ginormous. Awkward to eat. Tasted the best of the three though. The crabcakes were miniscule and mostly breading. My husband seemed unimpressed with the shrimp. The salads were simply dressed with no option but with what I guess could be called vinaigrette if I were being generous. The rolls were very grainy and not my thing. My salmon would have been terrific if it had been fresh. It was a huge portion but cold and the sauce had congealed. I liked the roasted potatoes and the veggies but again, cold. My husbands sliced steak concoction was at least warm and it was super tender. It was also well beyond a generous portion. He disliked the sauce though. The bar staff did well. We avoided the pitchers of flat beer and bad merlot, which helped. The mixed drinks were stellar. My Tito's and soda with a wee splash of cran and a lime were perfect. My husbands tequila and pineapple was also delish. Dessert was as good as the alcohol. Fantastic apple spice cake with cream cheese and caramel and a creamy chocolate pie. Yum. It was just typical wedding to me. I would never choose it myself.

They are a true well-oiled wedding machine -- they know the ins and outs of weddings, provide expert guidance, and have an incredibly professional staff that makes the large task of wedding planning feel so much simpler. The location is also wonderful: just 10-15 minutes outside of Ann Arbor and close enough to a major airport to make travel easy for out-of-town guests. A waterside gazebo was nearby if you wanted some shelter. My main quibble came as we were walking out. There are no lights in the parking area and it was a little difficult to find the row we'd parked in. As well lit as the area around the buildings was, couldn't one light be put in the parking area? Still, a very pleasant night, and I'd be happy to return.

When we got to hers, our minds were quickly made up - her work was everything we were looking for. The booking process was super smooth; we got to chat with her via Skype (as we were out of state) and work through all the little details. She really listened to what we were hoping to get out of the experience and worked with us to create a plan that fit us. We checked in with her in person a few days before the wedding to make sure all the details were set, timings were correct and to go over paper choices. I love speaking with Amanda because she is so professional and obviously a top notch photographer - but talking with her just puts you at ease. She is so warm and friendly, it makes the whole process so totally comfortable. The photos of the wedding itself were incredible. Amanda and her assistant captured all of the standard wedding shots, but all of them are distinctly done with the lightness and ethereal quality I was so hoping would be present. Amanda really did an absolutely stellar job and we could not have been more pleased with the whole experience.
