I went there a few years ago with a Groupon for full high lights. The first time I had ti be rescheduled because I was late (salon was empty). When I get there the second time Im told there was an upcharge because I had a lot of hair. I was ok with that. When my highlights were done she told me to leave because my appointment took too long and there was another client coming so she made me leave with my hair wet. I was stupid enough to even tip the lady. When I dried my hair at home it turned out YELLOW/ORANGE - according to a friend of mine was because it was not toned. She explained that she couldn't just reschedule bc she doesn't live close and she has an autistic son. They unapologetically told her she can just come back with him. She asked why they didn't call her before she got a sitter and drove out there. They said they have the wrong number for her but refused to check- pretty clearly they made no attempt to call- and again said it's no big deal just come back. She told them her son can't come back bc he is autistic. She said oh then do not come back, we can't have kids in here like that. You aren't welcome to come back with him. I have never heard of a business against an autistic child so vocally and felt compelled to leave this review for her and other parents. Since returning to SWFl 2 years ago, I've been on a mission to find my nail salon-- you know? The one. Unfortunately this mission will continue after visiting Mermaid Salon and Day Spa. I came across Mermaid Salon through a Groupon deal: $29 for a gel manicure and an express pedicure. Regrettably, I didn't look at Yelp reviews until I was already sitting down for my pedicure. Location: This salon is located in a nearly abandoned strip mall off McGregor Blvd and to be honest, my first impression was that it seemed run down & a bit sketchy. I sat in my car for a bit and considered if I was putting my daughters safety at risk by bringing her here with me, but after looking around and only seeing elderly people I grew less concerned. The interior salon decor itself has a lot of potential with the cute mermaid theme, but there is definitely room for improvement. Product quality: My appointment was with Bella who honestly did a fine job. I will note that I was pretty underwhelmed with color selection and off-brand polish. Bella mentioned that the gel polish in the white bottles (top rack in the 3rd rack pictured) were better quality so I felt limited to one of those, luckily out of the maybe one dozen options they did have a neutral color which is what I was looking for. Bella was very meticulous with the manicure and was a great conversationalist. When it came time for the pedicure, I was kinda shocked to see the pedicure station without the traditional pedicure massage chairs/ pedispa- when I signed up for an Express Pedi, I didn't anticipate this meant no massage/ foot spa! Overall, this nail salon was a bit of a commute for me, and I had to have passed probably 20 other nail places along the way, so I can't imagine that I'll be back, especially since the Groupon is for 1st time customers only. Low budget setup. The shop is in a sketchy strip mall next to a consignment store. Not a spa atmosphere. No pedicure chairs,only a homemade bench an a platform. The only water is from the bathroom sink. Know you are " going on the cheap" if you go here. I personally left. The owner called my cell phone to get me to change my review. Update: it has been over a week, and my left toe (the one bella cut along the cuticle) has been red and inflamed for the majority of it. I began applying neosporin on the day after the pedicure, after thoroughly cleaning it with antibacterial and hydrogen peroxide. Up until two days ago, I was seriously considering going to a doctor out of fear of infection, but it has since cleared up. (After a over a WEEK, almost 10 days, of inflammation, soreness, and extreme sensitivity to the point that I could not even wear socks or close-toed shoes) I cannot stress enough how terrible my experience with Mermaid Salon has been and I hope that these reviews prevent anyone from making the same mistake I did. read more

Is it me, or does the word pedicure mean your feet will be soaked, cuticles cut, scrubbed, and nails polished. If you think my definition is reasonable, then DO NOT go here! I purchased a GROUPON for the the Mermaid Salon for TWO gel manicures and express pedicures with paraffin wax (see attached), so I go and the salon DOESN'T even have foot tubs! She did my nails first, which were gel, but I promise you they begin peeling 2-days later! That aside, so when I go to the back for my express pedicure, I received the following: nail polish removed, lotion applied, wiped off with hot towel, paraffin wax, and nails polished. I have NEVER seen anything like it! It was HORRIBLE! When I asked about the foot tubs, I was told they don't use-them because they carry germs, NO they don't use them because this is a hair salon, wanting to expand it's offerings without making the financial investments to be able to provide a proper pedicure!!! The nail places I go to all use the disposable foot tub liners... 1st pedicure since relocating from San Antonio to Fort Myers, and I am NOT impressed. Please somebody refer me to a good place!!!!! I really don't want to give this Salon a poor review. This place has really great decor and presents as a very professional space. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. However, I think my results have more to do with the quality of products used and not the technique of the person performing the service. I got a Groupon for a gel manicure and a regular pedicure and I was super happy with the service. Bella is extremely friendly and easy to talk to. She took the time to go through and explain about gel manicures and what she was going to even though I've had quite a few. She did an amazing job shaping and painting my nails. One of my nails chipped the following week and that has never happened to me so soon after getting a shellac manicure. I also noticed little indentations and cracks forming on my other nails before the chipping. At one point, my nail bent in half against a door and the nail polish cracked in half, but the nail did not break. I don't think that the chip was due to a poor manicure, I think it has something to do with the polish used. It felt thinner than what I have had before and Bella did a great job, very meticulous and I was very happy with the initial results. I recently visited the Mermaid Salon and was attended to by Darlene, my stylist for the appointment. I had purchased a Groupon which included wash, dry, cut and full highlights. Upon giving Darlene the picture of the hair I wanted, included here, she told me it would be no problem for her however it would incur an extra $20 fee as it was a "specialized" hair cut. I found this quite dumbfounding and asked how she would change the hair cut in the picture to be not "specialized" unable to tell me how she would do that she said to simply forget it and we moved on. The second picture is what I received. The photo was taken two days after the appointment so take into consideration the cut and color only and not the styling. I was very unimpressed with my experience here. I brought my little girl in and we both got a manicure with gel nails and a pedicure. I bought a Groupon but then paid the extra to get gel on our toes. It's literally coming off her toes already and it's been like 8 hours. Not impressed. I think the devour is tacky and not relaxing and it wasn't worth the drive. Nothing special. The biggest thing was color selection for gel nails. The one nail artist said one of the two brands of gel polish were terrible and recommended I didn't get that brand. What was left was about 9 colors. Needless to say, I walked out with colors I'm not crazy about on my nails and toes. The girls were nice enough but I'm used to my nails being better detailed and looking nicer. I bought a Groupon for a Spa Manicure and Hot Stone Pedicure. When I redeemed it I was shocked that they didn't soak my hands at all to soften my cuticles, nor did my technician even use an emory board; rather, she used a drill to remove my cuticles and shape my nails. It has been five weeks since my appointment and I now have a ridge on all of my nails, and my nails are "softer." Also, for the spa manicure, I was not even offered a hand massage after my nails were painted. This was a far cry from a "spa" treatment and is falsely advertised. I could have gone up the street and paid $10 for this service elsewhere. As for the pedi, the salon doesn't even have pedicure chairs with tubs; instead, they have a single bench with cushions that all customers share (no arm rests) and the technician fills a large bucket of water for which to soak the customer's feet. The massage was practically non-existent (less than 5 minutes) and I never received hot stone therapy. If anyone is looking for an awesome salon in the Iona (Fort Myers) area, this is not a place I would go, especially for any type of lavish treatment, which you will not receive. read more

I was looking for a new nail salon after the one I had been going to changed ownership and i was not a fan. I asked a lady with some really pretty sparkly nails where she got them done and she referred me to Mermaid's. They were running a Groupon, so I thought I would try it out. We did have to work out a few cost issues regarding the Groupon, but otherwise, everything else was fine. I did a combo of nails and pedi's. I was very satisfied with the "dry pedi." She explained the reason they do it this way is that someone had gotten a nasty fungus/infection from a nail salon that was not using proper sanitation/sterilization techniques. I do remember seeing the story because it made national headlines and I did follow up on it. She went on to explain the reasoning behind it and as a medical professional with over 25 years of experience, it sure made sense to me. There are some places that have the proper "tubs" if you will, that can be sanitized, but most places do not. If I was going into a random or even a recommended place to get a pedicure, I would darn sure ask what their practices were. If you prefer a wet pedi, that's fine, but don't slam this place for doing it this way without educating yourself with the facts. This little place was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!! I could care less about going into some "hoity-toity", over the top, over-priced salon. I wanted to find a small, privately owned salon where my needs would be addressed , with good service and reasonable prices. I like to get fun, funky nail art, etc and I have been to some VERY good Asian salons where I loved the staff and their work, but sometimes, maybe it's a cultural/language issue, but I just couldn't get the artwork I wanted. Debbie is a true nail artist. I am so happy to have my sculpted nails back. She has done some amazing work for me. She offers suggestions and I give her artistic license as well. She was very willing to work with my work schedule if I had to make any changes. This is a very cute, laid back salon in an older building. I have never felt unsafe there (don't get that review at ALL). It is a bit further for me to drive, but it's worth it to me. I realize this was a bit long, and I normally don't do YELP reviews, or put much stock in them, because all it seems to be is people spouting off negativity and complaining. Decided I needed a pedicure and eye brows waxed before I started my new job. I had seen this place had a groupon, but didn't purchase because we weren't interested in a manicure. My mom came with me and we had a very good experience. The 2 ladies that did our toes were very sweet and friendly. A seperate lady did our eye brow waxing and they look great. The only thing I was disappointed about was that they didn't smooth the calluses on my heels. Mine are hard and always like that. I stopped in while on vacation with my mom because we both decided that we "needed a change" & we wanted to do something different. Upon walking into the salon it was very clean and had the cutest decor. We loved it. The owner Kathy Ann took care of us both. I wanted a dark auburn color in my hair while my mom wanted highlights. Kathy Ann worked her magic and made us feel so special. Because we were on Vacation and we were far from home, Kathy Ann wrote down what colors she used on our hair for our hairdresser back in Ohio. I received 2 sea-salt manicures and water-less pedicures with paraffin wax treatment as a birthday gift from my daughter for both of us to share. Two weeks ago, my daughter called to schedule an appointment and made sure to clarify that we were going to be using a groupon voucher. She called and requested two appointments for manicure and pedicure each. Today, the scheduled day, my daughter and I arrived at the business in order to get our service. We were greeted by a very unpleasant lady who did nothing but give us excuses as to why the two of us couldn't get our service; she also stated the appointment was for one manicure and one pedicure for two different customers. The lady, who I assume was the owner, stated she was the only one working there on Saturdays which leads me to believe, the person I dealt with today was the same person scheduling the appointments the day my daughter called. Even after scheduling, she could not provide service for the original appointment my daughter had made.My daughter mentioned that she had the lady who took the appointment repeat the details of the appointment before hanging up. After the lady stated that the groupon voucher was for only one person's use, we decided that I was going to get the manicure and pedicure; and yet being 10:30 am, and her mentioning she had another scheduled appointment at 12:00pm, she refused the service by stating that in order for me to use the groupon voucher it had to be a single service and not a double.In my opinion she invited us to leave, knowing that she still gets the money through the groupon voucher even without providing the service. She also mentioned that the person who scheduled the appointment had made this mistake before. Although, my daughter remembers that when she called to make the appointment, the person who she spoke to mentioned that she was the only one working on Saturdays. If I was able to give minus stars, this location would get -5 stars. The location is remote, salon is dirty, manager nasty, service people are incapable of basic salon tasks & they themselves have unkempt appearances (no makeup, dirty hair in scrunchies with black & blond coloring, dirty teeth etc). There were no sinks to wash your hands in. No basins to do a foot soak. They bad mouth Asian nail care. They do no filing but drill everything. They cut your skin. They do not cut hangnails or tend to cuticles. They do not care for feet bottoms, wash hands or feet. My daughters person Julie put wax on her feet and then did not properly remove wax. The blue polish then sat on top of wax on top of toenails & smudged all over her feet. We called the salon & got nowhere with Debbie the manager who was argumentative & rude. We then spoke to Kathiann the owner & my staff person, Bella's mother. That was the beginning of the end. She accused us of putting shoes on when the toenails were still wet (we were both wearing flip flops). She cursed at us (calling me a bitch and using the 'f' word.). My daughter is 9 mos pregnant. She is from NJ where she is a hair stylist at a high end salon outside of Manhattan. We have never experienced anything like this. The salon itself, service and abuse we were subjected to. Not the day spa atmosphere I am accustomed to. No massage chairs for pedicures but a leather sofa sitting on a wooden platform. No running water for pedicures but plastic tubs are filled with water and brought to the wooden platform. Hot stones are placed in there to get/keep the water hot. The manicurist's instruments were in a box similar to a child's jewelry box. I did not observe any sterilization. I have never had a manicure where I was not told to wash my hands before applying polish. Howevere, I did not see a sink. Surely there must be one. This place appears have been designed on a very very tight budget. If you are looking for a spa that offers beverages, chocolates, etc, go elsewhere. Probably the worst "day spa" I have ever been to.
