I don't know anything about the senior pastor at all so I can't comment about that. Usually visitors to a church assess the church by the sermon and music. But I have the unique experience of assessing by the inner workings I have observed and taken part in. Calvary Baptist Church is the church that the Billy Graham Association uses when they either have an event in NY or when they have a TV event and need phone counselors. I do have to comment on what one of the reviewers said. They said they like it when only one pastor preaches. I have to respectfully disagree. It is much healthier for the church members to hear different perspectives rather than just one person and it also shows that the pastor is not a control freak. If he was he would be hesitant to share the pulpit. It is also healthier for the pastors to be able to hear what others are saying in order to grow spiritually themselves. That way they can be accountable to the other pastors and not just be a dictator. If you know of a large church where the pastor refuses to share the pulpit be sure he is a dictator. Having more than one preacher is a healthy sign especially in a large church. The pastor I have worked with projects on at Calvary is extraordinarily humble so much so that he would be embarrassed at being named in a review so I won't name him. I worked under him on some volunteer projects and his leadership is what made them run smoothly. He had respect for all of the volunteers and didn't feel he had to control us or even know much about us in order to trust us to do our jobs. At many churches these days the control issue is big. If you don't let them control you then you are called rebellious. I am referring to churches you would know of if you are a Christian in NYC. I never experienced this at Calvary. Volunteering here was always an uplifting experience. Calvary is spiritually and socially solid. For my non conformist personality denominational churches seem too restrictive with their man made rules and regulations that have nothing to do with God but rather tradition. Calvary did not come across that way at all. The congregation seems to have freedom and is warm and friendly. They seem to be less self absorbed than many other large congregations in NYC. Many large churches in NYC have this attitude that you go to church and don't dare reach out to anyone because they have their own lives. Calvary doesn't seem that way. My volunteer work with them was from 2001 -2009. So I was able to observe how they function with each other over the course of many years. It is kind of silly to me to read 5 star reviews of other churches I have seen here by visitors to a church who may be touched by the music or theater of it all or the pastors charisma but know nothing of what goes on in the day to day functions of the church. I happen to know the inner workings of a few of those churches and I know they are at best cult like in terms of how they function. But if you attend the service as a visitor all you see is the production they put on. Calvary is pretty basic and sincere from what I have seen and by basic I mean no theatrics to fool you. Unlike many other NYC churches Calvary is not known for their pastor so it is not man focused but God focused. I have been a Christian after being an agnostic for years since the 1980's. I have been to many churches in NYC and know people at most popular churches in NYC due to my volunteer work. I have never heard anything bad about the church and it is the only large church other than Evangel I haven't heard anything bad about in the last 20 plus years that I have been a Christian. For that they get 5 stars. There are no scandals here unlike many of the other large churches in NYC. Here is a list of the ministries they offer. An unassuming building looking less like a church and more like ... a building. The 11:00 AM service was nice, exactly one hour. The pastor, unknown to me at he time, was greeting everyone who came in. He was in regular clothes, hospital, and seems like a regular guy. The church is my second I've attended that is on the second floor. Actually, I'm not sure here is a first floor, just a basement level where the congregation meets after service for coffee and cookies. There were about three people seated at 10:55 AM and then a big rush at 11:00 AM and then a slower progression for year next 15 minutes. Maybe close to 40 people eventually. No large stain-glassed windows, no chorus, a simple service guide, and very different from St. Bart's or St. Patrick's cathedral. The pastor is again down to earth and referenced YouTube. I enjoyed today, but if you are looking for something fancier, stick to midtown.

On one end, at times it seems liturgical in some aspects, other times it seems less than the PCUSA church I attend as far as liturgy ,feel and look. At times it reminds me of the interior of a Jewish synagogue versus a Presbtyerian mainline sanctuary. And honestly the robes look more like I am in a Jewish synagogue hearing a Rabbi speak and worship. I think this church would gain much if they let loose of these old fashioned preachers robes, and the bow has got to go. It looks and takes away from reverance. They need to have more elements of a Presbyterian sanctuary. It really leaves me with a mixed feeling. I know that God is in this place and they mean well. But you really do need to keep your elements of liturgy together and more uniform than a hybrid hodge podge puritan mix, that went out years and years ago. A nice processional with a cross, change of colors and more visual light colors versus the drab woud do this a world of good. They have elements of high liturgy, and then they down play it. It's almost as if they are there, then they back off. Another analogy, as if a Baptisit is trying its best to incorporate liturgy into a service. I like the sermons and the spirit, it just needs a 2021 /21st century Presbyterian face lift. ;)

This is a beautiful church- the architecture and the people…read more FAPC is clearly a very active church, with multiple projects in the community. The sanctuary is peaceful and calming. It is laid out like a massive theater, complete with wings and a balcony. There are lovely stained glass windows and a 7000 pipe organ. You are able to take a tour of this church after the service on Sunday mornings. Today, the reverend was absolutely amazing. She was a young, Asian female, extremely talented speaker! I was very impressed. The sermon was not stuffy, she was funny, somehow respectfully sarcastic, realistic and was able to communicate a clear message without, get this, preaching. Haha. The congregation is welcoming. We had communion this morning, we were asked to go up to the front to take the bread and wine. Good news- the wine is in individual mini cups so there is no drinking from the same cup here. Thank goodness. The woodwork is so amazing as well. Will definitely be back to this church. The pews are comfortable and there is central air. Pro tip- take the church tour after the service to hear about the Victorian Goth style of architecture, the windows, the wooden pews, carving, lighting and air/heat system. It is a breath of fresh air to meet people who have so much pride in their church. From the tour I learned that the steeple was once the tallest edifice in NYC back in the day.

They would stick to their same methods of worship and did not like change. When I attended the Journey I was greeted by many smiling faces which was great! When my family is in town I attend the Journey with them every time. Each time, I have had such a great experience. I really enjoyed hearing Kerrick preach. His messages are unique, they address topics that I have not heard before. I really liked his message on Prayer. His message notes allow you to follow along and keep something to recall what was discussed that Sunday. I live in the Bronx and I don't like to travel into Manhattan a lot. So, being able to watch live from the comfort of my own home makes things a lot easier. It is a wonderful church and I really do enjoy attending. I definitely recommend attending the Journey so that you may experience it for yourself!

Not sure if they did this because it was convenient or if they were trying to stick with the film theme; hopefully the former. I didn't recognize any of the songs they sung during worship time. I keep up with my worship music so I'm not sure why they feel like they have to use all their own songs. It would have been nice if they sung some more familiar songs. Worship is very "Hillsongs" style--put way too many hyperactive vocalists up there with a handful of instrumentalists. If you like that style, that's great for you, but it was way over the top for me. It seemed like everyone was an extrovert. The service was extremely uncomfortable for a more reserved, introvert like me. I really don't mean to have this review sound so negative; all I want to say is that it wasn't for me.
