I arrived in Bilbao on the bus and it was just an easy transfer from the bus station to the metro station. The entire walk was indoors in an climate controlled environment. The signs were plentiful and well set up. I had a public transportation card from Vitoria, which I was able to use in the Bilbao metro and bus system.. All the Basque country networks are now linked so all cities accept each other's transportation cards. The map made it easy for me to find out which direction to take and where to get off. Taking public transport in a foreign country especially when you don't speak the language can be intimidating. Thankfully not an issue with the metro here. Very easy to follow and took us everywhere we needed to go without much of a fuss. Very clean and on time as well. I wish I could take the metro back to San Francisco with me. read more

Clean and efficient, I rode the Metro in Bilbao a couple of times and found it easy to navigate and well polished. It's not a very complicated system. Zones are clearly marked on the map with the stations in the city in Zone A and the stations further away in higher numbers (with higher prices, of course). The lines pretty much go from one end of the city to the other and then fork to go on one or the other side of the river bank to the west of Bilbao. And it covers quite the distance. Plentzia (on Line 1 - the northern branch) is a good 30 kilometers from downtown Bilbao! In town, the stations are clean and very well lit. They have automated ticket vending machines and you can purchase one-time rides, passes or for the locals, proximity cards similar to the Charlie Card (Boston) or Oyster (London). The stations I visited all had lifts and stairs and escalators, plus overhead display screens with times for the next arrival. I have only one complaint that drops the Bilbao Metro from "As good as it gets" to I'm a fan - it does not yet make it to the airport. That, for me, is tops. read more

The metro in Bilbao consists of 2 subway lines, which are quite modern and offer an easy and fast way to get around. The fares are quite low, just 1.60EUR from the center to Plentzia on the seaside, with frequent service. read more

Pretty cool and clean subway. Similar to the one in Paris but much cleaner. A very good way to get around Bilbao as everyone drinks with their meal and it's not recommended to drive. Bilbao is also small enough to walk back to your hotels after each meal. read more

Modern, clean, safe, and convenient. You could also venture out of Bilbao and take the metro to the outside skirts. 25 minutes or so and you will hit the beach. Make sure you stop at Plenzia. Small fishing community with an amazing beach. read more
