Customers can also transfer downstairs to the metro (subway) line L2. Train tickets can be bought at the station or in advance online, I'd suggest booking earlier as ticket prices for regional legs to other major cities can increase closer to departure. Exterior and interior are modern, with triangular/diagonal/geometric design elements. Within the station several large overhead displays show arrival origins and departure destinations, scheduled/actual times, platforms, and special notes like notifications to board or delays. Travelers wait in the main lobby until platform numbers are published about 15-20 minutes prior to departure for regional trains, then head thru a preliminary ticket check (security checking that each passenger is ticketed), into the train platforms in the inner part of the station. Individual train info is also posted at each platform. Note for Circumvesuviana trains, they don't publish all intermediate stops on the displays so double check your departure time and destination are actually valid for your train route time. I inadvertently tried to get on the wrong train (following directions from Gmaps), only to be directed by a helpful train staff member to the next train on opposite platform arriving 20 minutes later. Inside the main train hall aside from ticket offices and machines, a tourist info center and currency exchange, there are probably two dozen shops and restaurants, not including a separate food hall with a dozen local and chain restaurants, bars and bakeries. From McDonald's and Starbucks to Toasthouse, Sushi Daily, Fresca Pizzeria Trattoria, Cuori di Sfolgliatella and Scaturchio Pasticceria. Within the rest of the station there's a grocery store, bookstore, souvenir, jewelry and trinket stores, cafes, fast food spots, bathrooms. Luggage storage available in station or in the blocks surrounding, which I'd recommend booking in advance. Overall the station was clean, functional and safe. I've no qualms about transiting thru here again!

So when I walked in to Napoli Stazione Centrale, I walked to the first automated ticketing kiosk I saw and bought a ticket. I now know better and will price shop for the next time. An hour and a half from Napoli to Roma for €49. It's much, much cheaper if you buy in advance but I didn't want to chance a late flight causing me to miss my train. For an extra €2, you can pick a seat and for an extra €7, you can wait for your train in their lounge. I skipped that and took the seat they assigned me and walked around the train station for a half hour. The train was reasonably comfortable for "economy." Less than half the car was occupied but they still seemed to put people together rather than spread us out. My seatmate didn't have the courage to move across the aisle to the empty seats there and I'd already plugged in my laptop and phone, so I stayed. It was fine for a short journey. Less than 90 minutes later, the train stopped at its first destination. In between, tickets were checked and some carabinieri walked through the train a few times as well. The ride was quiet enough, clean enough and surprisingly the wifi worked well. We topped out at 270 kph and it was smooth. It's a "bullet train" for sure. Welcome to Roma Termini! But that is not what this one star review is about. Absolutely less than zero customers service. Negative customer service. As in, I wonder why even bother to have people working a desk if they are going to be of absolutely zero help, or have no power to help, or no desire to help. In other words, unless your journey goes completely smoothly and normal, expect anything requiring an employee intervention to fail, because they won't try. In my case, when getting off the train in Rome, because many people are not tall like me, or strong enough to lift a 50 pound suitcase over their heads, I was assisting a lot of fellow travelers get their luggage down. Just being a good person, hoping my good karma would protect me. In the ensuing rush and confusion to get off the train, while I got my suitcase, my smaller carry on bag got left on the train. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until 15 minutes later and the train had already moved on to its final destination of Salerno. I realize that it is ultimately my fault I left a bag. But I would bet anyone a hundred bucks that in the United States, there would have been a relatively simply protocol in place, and I would have gotten my bag back later (even if it was at my own expense). Or at least someone would have attempted to help. Italo has absolutely no desire, or real process in place, to help you. I immediately go to their station office in Rome, which I would assume would be one of the largest ones, and most able to help. The woman who sits there and "helps" me speaks and understands english perfectly, so there was no misunderstanding. I tell her the situation, I show her my ticket, and explain I left a very easy to recognize bag in that specific seat, and can name all the contents in it, describe it, blah blah blah. She refuses to help. She won't contact the train, send a message, take my information, give me a form to fill out, absolutely nothing. She just basically says "Oh we can't help with that. Here is a completely useless crowdsourced website that isn't even owned by us, that if ANOTHER PERSON finds your bag, and deigns to even know about this stupid website, and goes through the trouble to post on said website, and you are able to find your bag on useless website, you may have a 1 in 10000 chance of ever getting it back." Getting my bag back would have been as simple as contacting the on-train staff and saying "there is a bag in or near seat X, looks like X, if you see it will you pull it off to the side and the customer will come get it in Salerno, or it can be brought back to Rome on your return trip." They wouldn't do it. I couldn't even pay or bribe them to do it. No amount of pleading about the importance of the items in that bag, some medical, would change this woman's expression. 'We got your money, and you'll get nothing else from us." is the attitude, and I would hope that regardless of cultural differences, people would at least want to help other people... especially if that is their job. They should be ashamed of their callousness.

There are some nice souvenir shops as well as some clothing stores. One store in particular was a favorite of mine - Real Luxury. Real Luxury is located just near the main entrance, specializes in high-end clothing and is run by a designer named Marco. He has designed, among many other items, an array of men's ties with multiple folds in the actual fabric. The most intricate of which is a "12-fold tie" that I think is just amazing. The port building is clean and easy to navigate. Once you're outside the main doors and ready to explore Naples and the surrounding areas, prepare yourself to be accosted by dozens of pushy taxi drivers. They engage you immediately to find out where you want to go and get you to hire them. Some are extremely pushy and will not take no for an answer without pushing harder. Some will even follow you for a bit while trying to get your attention and continuing to ask you questions about where you'd like to go. I had one guy follow me all the way to the sidewalk trying to get my attention and my business. Make sure you research all transportation options before your trip here. Hiring a taxi isn't always the most cost effective, or even the most scenic, option. Our plan was to spend the day visiting Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. We took a street rail car service from the port to the main train station. That ride each way cost us each €4.50.

My friend bought the tickets so I don't know how much the tickets cost. The train does not go all the way to the top. You'll still have a bit of hiking to get to the Castel Sant'Elmo but it's worth it. This is one of the busiest funiculars in Europe and opened on October 28, 1928. From Atlas Obscura, "The line serves fours stations and runs a length of 1270 meters (4167 feet), over which it completes a total elevation change of 170 meters (558 feet). As you walk in there are a few ticket machines from which you can purchase tickets by card or coins, and a cafe selling coffee, drinks and snacks. Head upstairs where there's an entry to both the metro and funicular here. Check that you're headed in the right direction, the ticket scanners at the turnstiles only work for the correct ticket so you'll know if you went the wrong way. There were staff checking tickets as well. There's a waiting area for the departures on bottom and top of the hill, for safety reason you can't wait on the steps where the cars ascend and descend. Compared to other funiculars, this one is more of a modern bus on a hill rather than the more trolley-like contraptions I'm used to seeing. It's pretty wide, seating 4 people across the width of the car, with a walkway between the seats, and plenty of standing room. Also there are multiple levels within each funicular car, so you can walk up/down the stair steps, which felt like a novel concept given my previous experience with narrower cars. As of April 2026, the the schedule for departure is every 10 minutes between 7am-10pm.
