This review is for early November. I totally would have given it 5 stars but knocked it down because they charged me more than what was on the menu. The red snapper was a set price on the menu but I was charged more than that and I didn't notice until I read the receipt at home. The restaurant is very pretty and homey. The waitress and I'm guessing is the owner is so lovely and attending! Now let's talk about food. I was alone at the restaurant at about 5 pm on a weekday and when I left there was another party dining in and another party taking out. I ordered a red snapper with rice and habichuelas and I freaking loved it! The meal reminded of the meals I ate as a child. The meal here felt so home made! Great spot for Dominican food. Mi Casa has a few different mofongos on the menu and I chose the mofongo de cerdo y queso, with garlic sauce (red tomato sauce was also available). On the side I ordered tostones as well as two pastelitos, one with carne and the other with cheese. These people are CROOKS! They charged me more than what was stated on the menu and THEN they charged a random "custom item" out of no where. When I asked the waitress what the "custom item" was that I didn't order, she replied back "that's my service fee", which by the way is not stated ANYWHERE on the menu or establishment. And I was the only one having lunch. It's not like it was a large party of people where automatic service charges are added for large groups. It was just me, myself, and I. This was my second trip here, and it once again did not disappoint. I had the yucca mofongo with pork and cheese, the first time, and then just a cheese mofongo the second time, and both were super-savory and tasty. (To my mind, the cheese was about as good as the more-expensive all-up mofongo, so you may want to save yourself $4.) It's essentially a volcano of tasty plantains with some flavorful soup over it. The first time, my buddy and I had the pastelitos as well, which were shiny, smooth pastries with a variety of fillings. I'm kind of mad for anything wrapped in dough, so maybe I'm biased, but I was pretty pleased with the texture. The second time, we split a yaroa, which turned out to be fries with cheese topped with a combo of what tasted like mayo and ketchup. (You can apparently have yucca instead of the fries, and next time that's what I'll do.) The ketchup was a bit too much for my sweetie, and I wasn't nuts about it, but the interior was awesome, in a vaguely poutine-y way. I wouldn't know from Puerto Rican food, but our Venezuelan buddy thought everything was on point, and it was certainly all delicious. For whatever reason, the joint was deserted both afternoons I was there, once on a weekday, and once on a Sunday, which mystifies me, as that place oughta be thronged. This is one of my favorite restaurants. Been going since day one and try to get new things often . The pechuga del valle was so good and fresh so was the yuca purée. The White sauce seals the deal . My kids favorite the sautéed pork chop and chicken with white rice and beans is always a must this time I wanted to try something new so I got the Yaroa which wasn't bad it gave me a loaded hot dog vibe super tasty tho . This place is so cute and the service is wonderful. La pechuga de valle is a must have as well as the Ave Marina. La Palomita de mi Tierra is so good (shrimp and guacamole on a fried plantain). Highly recommend going here it's so so so good. La pechuga de valle has a great white sauce and the chicken is amazing. I recommend a side of the rice and beans, or mashed yucca. The best I have ever had in my life. We got two appetizers for the table: Palomitra de mi Tierra and Otro Rollo. Both were good. We liked the shrimp one the best. My friend had a chicken wrap which had large pieces of chicken in it and served with fries and a fresh salsa on the side. Big enough to take half home. We went out me and my boys trying to find some good food, and one of my friends was Dominican so we decided to just say screw it and go, we order 3 orders of the chicken mofongo for 7.99 X 3, the food took maybe 45 minutes to get out. What I didn't realize is that the food was literal corn stuffing smashed on a plate in a volcano shape, with 0 flavor at all. And then 5 minutes later out comes the garlic "gravy" we were supposed to get with our meal. Now let me tell you that this garlic gravy was literal water and added 0 flavor. We wait another 10-20 minutes after we are done eating for just the bill to come out, at this time we needed to leave so I left 30 generously over tipping for terrible service and terrible food. Next thing you know our server comes running out of the restaurant saying we were trying to steal, she showed me the bill and it said 42.34???? I don't even understand how but I should've called the police, to clarify we also only got water, so there's no way the bill could've added up to 42.34. TL/DR: You are more than welcome to eat wherever you please but I would HIGHLY recommend not coming here, this place should honestly be investigated for this and I'm not surprised that other people say the same about their bills. Far from being a typical rice and beans joint, Mi Casa is haute Hispanic cuisine to the hilt, Heads will turn at the Chimi (non-traditional Dominican burger), the "Mar de amores," (Seafood platter) or "Ave Maria" (Chicken Breast stuffed with shrimp). We have tried all three and I'm going to keep trying different dishes, because I haven't been disappointed we any of them. They have traditional Dominican/Caribbean dishes we a delightful twist. We were in town for the Boilermaker and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed! I had the sangria which was delicious. We ordered two appetizers that were absolutely spectacular. My entree was good, but a little overdone. However, my husband loved his! We ordered a little something to take home and that was delicious. When we got the bill we couldn't believe how reasonable it was for the quality and amount of food that we ordered. My only complaint was that the food took a while (which I assume was due to that it was cooked to order, so it was to be expected) and that my chicken entree was a little overdone.
