Lately, CKO has been my go-to workout session for several reasons: 1) It's a full body workout in one hour. 2) Each workout is different. 3) All of the instructors are warm and friendly. 4) I take some pleasure in seeing my workout partner Marilu F get her butt handed to her before I start to feel bad for her. And then, she makes it through Dominic's class, nonetheless, and then I'm proud of her. Marilu is the one that got me started at CKO this year when she mentioned there was a deal going on for 3 classes and a pair of boxing gloves for just $29. Enough said. I signed up right away. CKO also had an option to try the first class for free. Soon enough, I attended my first class with our instructor Dominic. Just a few minutes before class, Dominic gave me an orientation. He showed me the correct stance being a righty. Then, he demonstrated a jab, cross, hook, uppercut, and several kicks with correct form. It's important to know since we have to execute a combination of these during class. In our experience, Dominic's class has been the most intense and challenging one at CKO Brickell. We get tortured right from the start before we even start hitting the bags. The leg workout, itself, is killer every time among other things. After that, we execute all of the punching/kicking combinations that he throws at us.. each one getting more complex as he adds on. Also, throw in a core workout in the middle of all this and you get the idea. Marilu and I know the suffering all too well. And, somehow, we keep coming back for more. I've also attended a class from instructors Isabella and Rodney. Both of them are gems and I love seeing them here. Also, this CKO location offers gatorade for $2 each along with some other beverages.

Mickey D is like the coolest understated hero of fitness in Miami and such a great family vibe in the atmosphere he created. Clean, airy, good equipment, facilities even showers! He's got really good energy and takes care of you as a beginner. I'm sure all his teachers are great but I took with Micky and he makes sure that you are good form and throw punches. The Box is located at the Shoppes at Midtown near Angelina's and SugarCane. Atmosphere: This studio is brand new and outfitted with lockers, changing rooms, immaculate bathrooms and a cool indoor boxing ring. There is also a juice bar, The Juice Box, that sells drinks and smoothies for a post workout treat. The actual boxing studio is a separate dark room with black lights, high ceilings, mirrored walls, and 3 rows of punching bags. Everyone gets their own bag and each bag has a sensor that tracks how many punches you get in and your power. You can see you stats at the end of class to gauge performance. Workout: I've tried class with 3 of the instructors (Angie, Mike, Alvin) and they've all been awesome. Music is blasting, and the instructors explain the punches/combos and walk around offering help where needed. Class is 45 minutes divided in into a couple segments: warmup, shadow boxing, actual boxing on the bag, 5 minute abs and a cool down. There is a clock on the wall that times the different sections, and the class FLIES by! The Box offers classes almost every hour on the hour so it's pretty convenient to find a time to come in. Other: Parking can be difficult. Give yourself 10 minutes to find a spot. Wraps are $6 for purchase and can be reused. Gloves are $3 for rental per class.

Give yourself some extra time so you don't miss a single minute of this killer workout. I brought my own wraps and gloves, and would recommend that everyone hits up the "going out of business" sale at Sports Authority to do the same. It's the most economical option if you plan on doing a lot of boxing over time....but I digress. Behind a very clean entrance area and small boxing ring are a wall of lockers. There's a few very clean and modern bathrooms with showers also available, and in general the entire place was immaculate. The class takes place in dark room with rows of bags tied to the ground. There's a few things I love about this setup: 1) you can hardly see yourself which means that nobody else can really see you...aka, no fear of being judged and 2) each bag is equipped with a sensor to keep track of your performance based on the number of punches you land. Being a VERY competitive person, this fueled my fire and motivated me to work even harder in class. I also really liked our teacher, Gab. She made the class super hard but wasn't intimidating or too tough on us. It was just the right amount of encouragement and technical support, and I really enjoyed her class. Overall, this studio, the amenities and teachers give this place an A+. Can't wait to go back!
