Great service, a happy hour, and a welcoming ambiance. Community events and live music.

Beautiful people are attracted to this place, the ambience is amazing, and the vendors are well selected. The playlists are well curated and the staff are personable! I personally enjoyed the delicious vegan tequenos from the Rutina Verde food truck in the backyard for the Wednesday night open mics!

My culinary druthers certainly lean toward cows on a plate or bun, with chimichurri, bbq or marinara. However, It's always a pleasure to join with friends and expand my dietary horizons. Such was the case tonight with Angelo & Jojo's get together at Roots Miami. At the very least, I can honestly say I'll come back here for dessert and fries! Their guava and apple empanada / pastelito is truly one of the best I've tasted; love the unique mix of flavors. The restaurant's hosts carried with great descriptions of the ingredients and dishes, as well as loungey chill remix of 90s & early 2000's HipHop classics. They also hooked us up with lemonade and water, especially since in my case I didn't like the Kava. (Thank goodness for the pineapple slices served as chasers.) As far as the food,we had a full course meal starting with their vegan "beef" empanada. I included the menu in the photos, but as far as taste & consistency this was the one with the closest taste to real beef. I believe it's made with a base of black beans & corn. Next up was their "chicken" nugget. Basically encrusted with corn flakes, to me it had the taste & consistency of corn bread. The sweet & spicy sauce (with the spicy after kick) was a bonus and brought my taste buds pleasant memories of the bbq sauce from the restaurant with a bearded dude logo (name begins with an F). Their thick cut fries are delicious; I'd come pick up an order to eat with my usual "burger". Roots' lentil & quinoa based substitute was actually pretty decent, considering both of the ingredients are in my usual vegetarian stable. The burger did taste a little saltier than I was expecting though. Next up was their spicy mac and cheese (hot even sans jalapeno) with the bbq sauce they mixed in. We closed the night with a apple & guava pastry. It tasted right up there with the classic cuban dessert and I'd definitely come back for the dessert. It was definitely a cool foodie experience and can definitely stop in next time I'm feeling adventurous. They also have cool art in the restaurant, and have different music & standup performances on various evenings.

I'm not going to sugar-coated for you: Plain and simple, Kava taste disgusting. It's the truth. I have never tried Ayahuasca ( the southamerican beverage that make you throw up, hallucinate and see God), but the flavor and consequent effects of drinking kava made me think that I was about to see baby Jesus. OMG! For those of you who don't know, kava is a drink made with Kratom- a plant from the coffee family that is consumed for mood enhancement, stimulation, anxiety relief and recreational use.... in other words, will give you a "holistic" high. Indeed. This adventure started by asking one of the patrons which kava drink he'll recommend. His response was fast and furious: "Lady, if you want to feel something you need to order (not sure about the name) Dirty House($15)". (Definitely not the drink to get to a newbie). And I felt things. I did. First, my lips started to tingle (that was kind of funny). I was with a party of 4, and suddenly all the chitchatting started to sound like blah, blah blah, blah, blahblabla, blahblahblah.... seriously. I was like WTF! And then the itching started. My legs, arms and neck... cortisone, anyone? I'm laughing now just remembering. Roots offered a large selection of vegan items, however, not everything is vegan. There cookies are not. So, make sure you ask. We ordered several dishes to try and they were okay, nothing memorable. Just comfort vegan food. I always try things once. Let me scratch out kava from my bucket list.

Roots Miami Kava & Eatery Believe it or not, I actually enjoy kava. I wouldn't go so far as to say I like the taste. But I can always get behind some ritual. The cups and the bulas and the grimaces are all part of the fun. One just has to get past the muddy water taste. So, when an event popped up at Roots Miami Kava & Eatery, I was keen on getting there. Top it off with vegan food and I was ticket in hand. The menu was a prefixed, tasting style. We got to sample Chicken Tenders, Mac and Cheese, Beef Empanadas, Sliders, and a sweet ice-cream and Guava dessert! We started everything off with a bowl of kava and an opening bula. After that were lead through different tastes all along the vegan spectrum. The standouts for me where the Beef and Bean Empanadas and the Angry Mac and Cheese. The empanadas were filled with Atlas meat crumbles and fried crispy, hot and delicious. The mac and cheese was filled with vegan cheese that actually melted and topped with jalapenos that gave it it's angry moniker. And it did have some kick. Roots Miami Kava & Eatery has a great space. It's large and has distinct areas to populate. You can sit at the bar and get some juice or kombucha or kava. Or grab a table and get some food. They also have an outdoor area with tables you can hang at. The establishment is alcohol-free and totally vegan. They do things such as food events and live music and video games on a regular basis. It's worth checking out. Often. BULA!

Get back to your roots by visiting Roots Kava Lounge. This place has a wonderful vegan menu with amazing mac & cheese options. I tried the half tea and half lemonade better known as Cheech & Chong with a flatbread. The C&C really gave me a boost of energy and the flatbread was very tasty. I then ordered a double shot of kava juice and let me preface this by highly advising you to have water on standby since kava juice does dehydrate the body if not balanced with water. But not to worry because at the edge of the bar is a large water dispensary for you to remain hydrated. The staff and owners are very friendly and the decor has great wall murals of nature. They have fun event nights featuring open mics and other artistic performances. I definitely plan to return again soon. Here's to Roots Kava Lounge....BULA!

I'm a carnivore but I also love my veggies, especially when they are disguised to look or taste like real meat. Roots Miami Kava did justice with their meatless creations at the Spring Roots event collab with @TryThisMiami. I'm now a believer! Amen! This dining experience featured a prix fixe menu so guests could sample the different vegan concoctions offered by Roots. We started with a toast of some kava drink. Honestly, it was a little muddy for my taste but then again, this was my first time tasting kava. The first item on the menu was the Chicken Tenders. I couldn't even tell the difference. It was super crunchy too. Next was the Beef and Bean Empanada. Freshly baked, flaky and piping hot. The third one was the Angry Mac. This was my favorite. It was simply superb. The pasta was al dente and a good amount of gooey cheese. It was super tasty that I got another bowl to take home :) The fourth one was House Slider with Fries. Another favorite of the night. Fries were perfectly crisp and the slider was scrumptious. Last of course was the dessert but I was surprisingly so full so I skipped it and gave it to a friend. I'm sure it was also delicious because everything before that was just that. This prix fixe menu was only $31 and it was more than enough. I'm glad that I was able to experience this event. Roots Miami Kava is on 2nd Ave but going opposite of Wynwood so it's not on the busy strip. I'm telling you, folks, it's worth the detour. Besides the tasty vegan food and variety of kava drinks, they also have live performances or open mic on some nights. I will definitely come back so I can educate myself more on kava plus get an Angry Mac of course :)

Looking to do something out of the norm, something that wouldn't be on the normal spot to hit you would in miami to grab a drink or hangout? This is that spot you have been thinking about and didn't even know it. I have had a Kava beverage before but my friend hadn't so we stopped in last night. It was the perfect time to go. They were having "Hemptopia" at Awa Kava Lounge. It definitely infiltrated the ambiance of the place. As you walked up and into the place the vibe was obviously chill with dozens of people hanging out on the front lawn and porch. I say this as Awa Kava is a business inside a ordinarily old house with porch and backyard. Speaking of which, the backyard was hopping, at least it was last night, as rap, island and other music acts were filling the night with sound. The bar/kitchen area was where to get a drink. It was full of first timers because of the festival. As Awa Lounge isn't in the nicest part of midtown there were a few suburbanites looking and sensing a little out of place. I tried to help a few of the ones that probably ended up here because of the article in the Miami times promoting the festival. We got the shots, 2 for 6 dollars. They are like a regular Kava drink, but served in a shot glass and it extra strong. A guava like one and a cream chocolate type. Both were equally tasty we thought. "You can barely taste the dirt" she said. Which is of course more or less what Kava is. If you google it though and see the benefits, you just might get hooked. I know we will be back!

When I came last weekend the vibes were great, it was just extremely packed to the point that everyone was grinding up against each other. Which in that moment I didn't care because I figured it's at capacity and that's normal. Although, I realized when I was leaving the bar that someone had opened my purse and taken my entire wallet. I was bummed because I couldn't continue partying up the night. This led me to message them on Instagram, which was great because they told me to come in and drinks would be on them for the inconvenience. We got to the bar and I spoke with the bouncer and he said to go to the bartenders, that they would direct me to Rensel the bar manager. He was absolutely lovely, provided my friends and I a round of cocktails and told us to look for Sophia for another round. We didn't end up getting another round because we were exhausted from dancing the night away. It was still very nice and accommodating that they did that and we appreciated it. Sophia was very bubbly and attentive as well. Overall, if you are looking for a bar with a disco ball!! This is a cool spot to come to, they have so many different specialty cocktails. What wasn't understandable was standing around the crowded bar area for an hour and a half before finally being seated at 10:30 p.m. After waiting 90 minutes past our reservation time, we were seated at what was arguably the worst table in the restaurant--right next to the kitchen and directly in the path of a constant stream of staff walking behind us all night. Because we were a large group, food came out at different times. The couple at the opposite end of the table still hadn't received their entrées while the rest of us were already finishing ours. Eventually, we realized they had ordered chicken--the same dish some of us had received. When we brought it to our server's attention, she seemed confused. We asked to speak with a manager and were absolutely stunned by the response. What should have been a simple kitchen error turned into one of the most bizarre restaurant experiences I've ever had. Instead of apologizing for a missing entrée and finding a solution, management told us they had reviewed security footage and claimed members of our party had eaten our friends' meal. We were shocked. Not only was the accusation completely unfounded, but it was delivered as though we were somehow responsible for their mistake. Mistakes happen in restaurants. We would have understood that. What we couldn't understand was being blamed instead of receiving an apology or a solution. To this day, I'm still confused by how management thought that was an appropriate response. Adding to the frustration, at no point during the 90-minute delay or the entrée mix-up did management make any meaningful effort to communicate with our group, apologize for the inconvenience, or improve the experience. As for the food, it was mediocre at best and certainly not worth the wait. The only positive thing I can say is that the décor is beautiful. Unfortunately, between the excessive wait, poor service, lack of accountability, and being falsely accused of causing the restaurant's mistake, we definitely won't be back.
