Dr Byun is a dishonest, untrustworthy physician. I had a breast augmentation with him years ago that I am now having to have them redone by another surgeon. He is very good at seeming honest and up front, but disregards the clear wishes of his clients. I went in asking for a fairly minimal augmentation, looking to go from a small A to a full B cup size. What I ended up with are stiff, over filled, unnatural looking breasts that are almost a D. Having done consults with other surgeons to have my implants redone I had requested the medical file from Dr Byuns office to find out that Dr Byun had filled my 325 cc saline implants to 400cc, which is far more than both the FDA and the manufacture of the implants recommend. Overfilling the implants not only increases the risk of the implant rupturing, but also voids the manufacturers warranty if one were to rupture. Having gone back with concerns after the surgery, I would schedule an appointment to see Dr. Byun only to be told that he was not there and that I would be meeting with his Physicians Assistant. I was not even able to get an appointment with Dr. Byun when I came in to address the fact that one of the implants had dropped lower than the other and had not formed into a natural shape like the other. The only time I did manage to get an appointment with him after the surgery he disregarded my concerns about what was occurring with my own body, defended his decision to make the implants much larger that I had requested, and was arrogant enough to tell me that his office even continuing to address the issue was merely being done as a courtesy to me. Dont be mislead by his supposed "feature" in Chicago Magazines "Best Physicians" issue, which is posted on his website, which upon close examination have "special advertisement" printed on it. The only person referring to Dr. Byun as one of the "Best in Chicago" or an "Architect of Beauty," is Dr. Byun. Someone who will be preforming a surgery on you should be honest and trustworthy, not an arrogant salesman. read more

I'm surprised by reviews that judge a physician without ever experiencing his work. I wouldn't make sense to judge a restaurant without tasting the food. But that is beside the point. I was referred to Dr. Michael Byun by a nurse colleague in the cosmetic surgery profession. I had suffered a botched mid face lift and liposuction procedure. The end result left me with a "shark like bite" in my thigh, and sutures that were popping out of the skin on the side of my eyes. When I met Dr. Byun he was courteous, friendly and professional. His calm patient manner was a great help to me when my frustration was at an all time high. He explained what he needed to do, he took his time to explain the procedures and answer all questions. I was immediately convinced he was the right physician to take on my complicated issues. His knowledge and remarkable problem solving abilities are rare indeed. Since then, I have had several more procedures with Dr. Byun including a brow lift, breast augmentation, liposuction and numerous laser skin resurfacing and botox treatments. All is work is masterful with precise attention to detail. He has a very helpful attitude and was there if I ever had a question or problem. He consistently has gone out of his way to make sure that everything would go smoothly before, during and after my procedures. It just seemed like he would always go the extra mile. Since I've had some very challenging procedures due to previous physician errors, I appreciated the time and thought he put into the procedure to assure an exceptional outcome. He continually thinks outside the box and I appreciate that he tailors a specific plan for each individual patient. I do not recommend Dr. Byun (in fact I would use no star if that was an option on the above rating). After consulting with Dr. Byun on several occassions and doing research on him, I would definitely not go to him for surgery nor would I recommend that anyone shoud either. (Just to be clear - he is the same doctor at 1 East Erie in Chicago and at 1775 Walters in Northbrook). I don't know where to begin with how disappointed I was as I learned more and more about Dr. Byun. First of all, he talks a big talk----but it's just overexaggerated praise for himself. I've learned since seeing Byun that much of the praise you see about doctors in their ads online is construed and hype that they have paid for themselves. Byun certainly has quite a few very arrogant ads about himself. Byun showed me a portfolio of his patients before and after pictures hoping to impress me. I pointed out that many if not most of the pictures seemed unfair. The before picture showed a somber or sad client with hair unruly, no make up, poorly dressed, in a darker background etc. and in the after picture the client was smiling, hair and make up done well, dressed well and with a cheerful background. Byun said "his assistants put the portfolioi together and he'd have to talk to them about that". (I seriously doubt they did something without his approval). His prices are outrageous -- far more expensive than even various top doctors throughout the U.S. He of course is constantly telling you that he will give you his "lower" or "discounted' price which even then is still outrageous. When I questioned his prices, he had the gaul to say to me "You're lucky to get me now with these prices before I become world famous and then you wouldn't be able to afford me." (I'm not making this up--he really did say that). He (oddly) broke down each "procedure" of the various steps of a facelift surgery and what each would cost, whereas these procedures should all (normally) be part of just one procedure and just one cost (a facelift, period). I've spoken with quite a few plastic surgeons in as well as outsife of the Chicago area over the years, and Byun was the only one who broke down each part of a faclift surgery cost. He apparently is trying to try to impress with medical terns and also in order to charge more. Byun brags that he uses "expert facelift techniques" such as using endotine suture which "separates him from other doctors". Other doctors I interviewed and read about say the entotine suture is nothing new, and in fact these doctors have stopped using endotine years ago because of the risks it entails. So, yes, Byun does indeed use a tecnique that other docrtors do not use, and it is because other doctors do not want to use it (or rarely use it) or recommend it. The "quote sheet" he filled out and gave me for my procedurre (facelift) of prices and procedures itself was sloppy and very unprofessional. You'd think I was buying a houseplant. On only the second visit with Byun, and before I was even considering Byun I was given "pre-surgery instruction" --what to do day of surgery--which is something you do not recieve until well after you have decided what you want to do when, where, etc. It was extremely premature and pushy to hand that to me. As I was researching Dr. Michael Byun and looking for reviews, I ran across the name "Dr. Young Byun" who had very negative reviews (on RateMDs.com site) and when I asked Byun in an office visit if that was also him, he said "no, it was another doctor". When I investigated furthur I found that Dr. Michael Byun DOES also go by Dr. Michael Young Byun and that both Michael Byun and Young Byun were at the exact same address with the exact same phone no, same medical school, etc. I called his office and asked why Dr. Byun would not tell me he was also Michael Young Byun and the criticisms I read really were of him. His assistant said (exact quote)---"this is very embarassing". She didn't know (or more likely want) to explain it and even tho I asked her to have him call me to explain, I never heard from him again. My recommendation to anyone is to not to be impressed by "salesmanship" and to do lots of research. Talk with many different doctors (even if it's just by phone)-----look up reviews (some may be true and some may be unfair)----but find out all you can and don't rush to a conclusion or decision. Even rich and famous people have been poorly advised. Take your time--ask a LOT of questions. There are really good doctors out there---I did my reseach and found an excellent surgeon--far cheaper and a terrific person. read more

Where do I begin, Dr. Byun is amazing!!!!! In January, I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Byun and upon meeting him I instantly felt at ease. His staff is also amazing warm and friendly. Dr. Byun is very knowledgeable about breast augmentation surgery. We discussed safety which relieved many of my fears of having surgery (I've never had cosmetic surgery before). After our conversation I left confident and knew I only wanted Dr. Byun to perform the procedure. A week later, I arrived at Dr. Byun's Chicago office for the procedure. I was very nervous, to say the least, but upon speaking to Dr. Byun I was at ease and we talked through the procedure once more. When I awoke from the procedure I was in pain to say the least, but I had the meds that Dr. Byun had prescribed and I quickly took them. Again, his staff was amazing; patient and caring asking me how I felt etc. I arrived home and his office called to check on me and I was also given Dr. Byun's cell number if I needed to call him. Days later (I can't remember how many 2 or 3), I went for my follow-up to make sure everything was healing well. I continued to see Dr. Byun months later to make sure everything was great. Over nine months later, I am still very happy with the results of my procedure and I am very glad I chose Dr. Byun to do the surgery. He takes great pride in his work (I am his creation and he is a sculptor) making sure my body looks natural and pleasing. This was very important to me, because I didn't not want to look awkward or unproportioned to my body-type. I could go on and on about how amazing Dr. Byun is. I've never written a review, but I had to for Dr. Byun. I have recommended two of my friends to him and they absolutely love him, which I knew they would. He's so amazing, one of my friends is losing weight before she has surgery, and she consults with him regarding her weight loss progress, how incredible is that! He's helping her attain her goal weight by providing a little accountability (I don't' think he did this on purpose this is just who he is) (which she loves). She was amazed and thanked him. It tells me that he truly cares for people and helping us to be our best. What an AMAZING DOCTOR!!!! My other friend said, "when she met him he was so knowledgeable about her procedure (they also discussed safety) and she trusts him implicitly to do her surgery". Run, do not walk elsewhere. He is kind, compassionate and engaging as long as you agree that he walks on water. I had a tummy tuck that went terribly wrong and I now look like a burn victim who is uneven, lumpy and bumpy. When it was apparent that Dr. Byun was not going to get a result that he anticipated, he gave me a pep talk and told me that my result would be an A-, and not the A+ that he had hoped for. In his expertise, my wound was to close in three weeks when in fact it took three months before this occurred. (I ultimately went to a wound specialist/general surgeon for treatment because I could not listen to his sales pitch any longer.) He verbally scolded me for my negative attitude for being so upset with what I looked and smelled like from all the dead skin. One thing we agreed on is that I regretted ever walking in his door and he agreed that he regretted doing my surgery. Once I stopped having any faith in his surgical ability, he was inappropriate in his responses to me; there was zero empathy for the surgical result that he left me with. I have a flat tummy with a horrible result. Trust me, there are more qualified providers out there; just because he is more expensive does not mean that you are getting the best. Note: I am a healthy heath care provider who does not smoke and am not a diabetic. There was no medical reason for the poor wound healing. It was sub-standard medical intervention. Dr. Byun is a liability to the medical profession and an accident waiting to happen to other innocent patients. Don't get fooled by those Chicago Magazine ads, he pays for them. read more

I would like to start by saying that this is a completely honest review and I am writing this to help anybody that is seriously considering having a face lift or any other kind of plastic surgery. I am going to be 58 years old this year. After 20 years of law enforcement, raising five children and experiencing many stressful events, it all took a toll on my face. The last straw was when I was walking in the mall and happened to see a reflection of myself in one of the store windows. It took me a minute to accept the fact that the old women staring back at me was actually me! I still felt young on the inside but my face reflected a woman who looked old and tired. I then made the decision that I was going to do everything in my power to make the outside of my body reflect what I was feeling on the inside. After much research I chose Dr. Byun to do my face lift. The results are truly amazing! Plastic surgery is not for everyone but if you decide that it is for you then you owe it to yourself to have Dr. Byun as your doctor. I am going to be honest, you will experience a little discomfort, look terrible right after, and although rare, some people may experience minor complications. I experienced watery eyes for quite a while but I followed Dr. Byun's instructions and my watery eyes disappeared. You have to remember that having a face lift is major surgery and all our bodies heal differently. Most importantly, you can not judge the success of your surgery until literally at least 7-12 months after you have had it. You may think that after a couple of months you don't see any more swelling but there is still some swelling and like I said, it takes anywhere from 7-12 months for your face to really evolve into the final product which is a face that no longer looks old and tired but beautiful, young and vibrant. As I recommended Dr. Byun to another person today, I thought it was high time that I write a review. In a bike accident in 2012, I put my teeth thru my upper lip and into gravel. I came to Dr. Byun just out of the ER, concussed, and vaguely aware that I may never look the same again. Dr. Byun held his office open for me and worked on me after closing time (that ALONE deserves 5 stars). Dr. Byun carefully stitched up my upper lip, preserving shape and function. He also cleaned out and told me how to prevent scarring across other injured areas of my face, beyond my lip, and added some stitches to a deep gash in my chin. After the initial wound had closed, I returned several times for him to remove the gravel that had been embedded. He had carefully chosen how much gravel to remove the first day--knowing that if he removed all of it, some skin would have had to go with it, and that would have caused more scarring. 3 years later, I do not have a scar! I have a very little amount of gravel in there--but that is my own fault! I have been lazy returning for the final removal because it looks SO good already. I need to get back to see Dr. Byun soon! read more

Master of the Vampire Lift!!! I read a lot about it before deciding to undergo this procedure and found that Dr. Byun actually invented this procedure over 10 years ago. Who better to do the procedure than the founder?? Well during the consult Dr. Byun explained that not everyone needs the lift in the same area which makes the procedure specialized to the individual's need. But here is the bonus.... He mixes the lift with fillers to actually give you that filled look with the lift. The procedure took about 45 minutes and the results was immediate! Yes there was swelling and brushing but within hours the swelling went down and couple days the minor bruising went away. My face has never looked better. The skin is so plump and tight and my neck is lifted and smooth. I just turned 50 and was starting to get concerned but now I look 20 years younger and feel just as young. What surprised me the most was how instant the result was and how fast the recovery time was as well. I am not going to lie, there is pain but it's not unbearable and Dr. byun talks you through it explaining and answering any questions. What's nice about it is you use your own blood platelets so your body is not absorbing some foreign substance. I don't understand why more people would not opt to get this procedure done before considering the face lift. It's almost like a "refresh" your face procedure that can be done in less than an hour and you walk away looking so much younger. No amount of expensive creams and facials can give you this kind of result and so fast! My advice though is do NOT shop around for cheaper deals and imitators. Go to the master and the founder of the Vampire Lift himself and not put your face in the hands of the unknown unqualified doctors. This is a safe procedure and I recommend it highly but only if you go to Dr. Byun. Thank you Dr. Byun. You truly are the best plastic surgeon! read more
