I usually enjoy shopping at Michael's because the store has a great selection of craft supplies and I can almost always find what I need even if the prices are higher than most shops. Unfortunately, the checkout experience completely ruined this visit. There were only self-checkout registers open and just one employee assisting customers. When one of the registers double-scanned an item, I needed help to fix it. It took nearly 20 minutes to get assistance because the single employee was overwhelmed helping multiple people. I understand staffing challenges happen, but waiting that long just to fix a scanning error is frustrating and unacceptable. If the store is going to rely primarily on self-checkout, there needs to be adequate staff available to assist customers quickly when issues come up. Great products, but the checkout process seriously needs improvement. read more

I'm so at my wit's end when it comes to customer service at the store. So much so that I wanted to leave this review. The first instance was a couple months ago when I ordered some Cake pants online for store pick up. It had been a few days and I went to check the status and it said that they were already picked up. I know this could not be possible. I called the store and they searched for them and couldn't find them. Then the store proceeded to tell me that they no longer carried those cake pans and that if I wanted my money back, I had to call their 1-800 number. This was ridiculous. They were the ones that lost the pans and then marked them as being picked up. After spending countless minutes on the phone with a person from the 1-800 number I was able to get my money back, but I was not able to get the cake pans as they were not in stock for several weeks. Just today, I went to the store for another pick up. My item was not in the area where they have the pick ups so an associate had to help me. She asked me for my last name and I told her she goes behind the counter, shuffles around a bit and comes up with a bag and says - does your last name start with an R and I look at her kind of confused because it doesn't said - no, but my first name starts with an R and then she looks at me and goes - that's what I said! I asked if your first name started with an R! I wasn't about to argue with her that that in fact was not what she said. Even if she had said that, why would you correct a customer like that?? What a snot! I wish Hobby Lobby had online purchase ability and I could just forget this store. read more

I asked for a refund, the first employee saw it was their mistake and began the refund, a manger stopped him and said- "It is our corporate policy not to refund"- I asked- "Even when it is your mistake?"- I was informed- yes- even when it is our mistakeour "corporate policy" is - no refunds- we were told we would not get a refund and if we wanted the item we ordered we would have to pay again!! This place is a crafters dream I think, but for someone who wants to minimize, it is a bit overwhelming. The isles are tight and packed full. When we went to shop, it was probably at its annual pick of capacity (right before Christmas). We went in to find some watercolor paper and decided to purchase some watercolors as well. I was surprised to see them locked up. We then had to hunt down a staff member to unlock. Apparently theft is just seriously bad around here. While a nice place to go for crafts I wouldn't visit this location. You will pay more then you have to and when you ask for manager you may get some random person unwilling to give name. A store has a 50% sign where the item you bought was AND the item should apply for discount (planner stickers) instead of making customer happy and moving sign so next customer isn't upset you just say "too bad and I don't have to give you my name". I always used Michael's for framing when I lived in Minnesota.They did a beautiful job. Recently I had purchased a 500 dollar original acrylic painting and it needed framing. A staff member that looked young and inexperienced took my order, and the cost was close to 200 dollars. The finished product was so ugly I never even put the painting on my wall. They gave it 'skinny' margins even though I had asked for a weighted bottom too. It looked cheap and ugly. I also found that instead of the wire hanging material I had always received back in Minnesota, they put two weird hanging things on the back so there was no way to hang it without two holes! It was ugly and I'll never go back. They ruined my original painting - not sure where I will go to have it redone --- I was just SICK about how it came out. Ugly. read more

The most unfortunate thing about writing during a pandemic, writing for elite, and writing for a company that has multiple factors is that you MUST compound the good with the bad. This is life. I got an email from another company saying "save your bad ratings for after the pandemic" but that's not fair. In a pandemic, if someone has $10 to spare, the LAST thing they need is fake ratings driving them to a sub-par location to spend their money utterly frustrated. So, this rating is going to be true. All things considered. If I could rate Michael's based purely on Stephanie in the framing department I would give a 6/5 stars. That's right: I'd offer an extra star in her case. The beginning of the month, we went to Michael's 3 times. During this closure we went again today. That's 4x total. That's a lot of Michael's. Stephanie took my last piece of art that my best friend painted the month she died. She educated me on the type of frame and glass that is "museum quality" to keep it perfect condition till my BFF's girls are old enough to have it on their own home. She took her time. She even helped me re-ring my frame order because Michael's had a DOPE buy 1 get 2 frames, as well as another buy 1 get 1 on another brand. And I wanted all the free things. She helped me get the most BANG FOR MY BUCK! This is what I wished the total experience of Michael's was. Unfortunately, the first time I went in person, set up my rewards account, told them I was a veteran, and it was a "new" employee-- she didn't add my 15% off discount. She also didn't inform me there was a 20% off discount going. Thus, when I went the 2nd time (same day) and found out this was happening, the manager had to go through my same-day receipt and refund and recharge EACH item, adding the discount. Took about 20 mins. On the 2nd time, when looking for jewelry items to make mask necklaces for my family, I couldn't find ONE person who knew where things were located. To be fair, I couldn't find one person not at a register. Though, I could hear the manager and other staff hiding in the break areas. How do I know it was the manager, because later this young lady would be refunding and recharging my original order. This isn't ok. Staff should be out on the floor, breaks should be staggered, and folks should not just be roaming lost. But this seemed to be a pattern. Today, we did the curbside to pick-up for the framed finished art. Danel was outside taking names and alleged orders for pick up. However, other workers would walk out and then look totally lost on where they were giving items and to whom. A line ended up forming outside of a closed store. DURING A PANDEMIC. This is the customers noticing that in-car the employees were not ordered, organized, and were utterly lost. To make matters worse when you call they literally HANG UP on you. I understand, it's busy, overwhelming--- but people don't call to have the phone lifted up and slammed back down. Crazy thing, if you call twice, they *may* answer the 1st time but since they can see your phone number if you call a 2nd time they will hang up on you EVERY time. My boyfriend and I have different area codes. This is how I know this to be FACT. Here is the deal. We have all these big-box options. JoAnns opted to stay closed in NM for this closure. Perhaps, optically this will be better in time. Michael's staying open, not knowing how to operate while open but doing curbside only, and NOT allowing returns is a bad idea. Why? Because though capitalism wins, in the long-run the feeling of 1) being hung up on though Y'ALL called ME to pick my art up will sit forever in my mind; 2) the uneducated and stressed staff from the beginning of the month are now AMPLIFIED with "curbside only" so much so that 4 workers were lost and walking with bags back-and-forth makes me think everyone is lost; 3) taking peoples money but not allowing refunds (on produces like jewls sent via mail that are protruding and not fit to be sold) takes from my finances which like everyone else's are slim; 4) the manager was, again, nowhere to be found and this constant "missing-in-action" will deter me in the future. Again, I'm not here to give everyone 5/5 because "pandemic." I'm here to be honest. Without Stephanie I'd probably give this store 1 star and would probably have never gone back. I think a solid plan when you opt to stay open when all others in your category opt to close is better. I think knowable, friendly, calm staff is needed in all departments. But who am I? What is an MBA good for? Spend your pandemic dollars wisely. It hurt my heart to see elderly folk in their PJs standing in 40 degree weather waiting for their "curbside" in a pandemic because the staff was beyond lost. I am, however, elated with my framed photo. I love the rewards program. I love the pricing at Michael's. Furthermore, I'd still come here over Ho**yLGBTQ/Women's Rights Unfriendly any day. read more

I've been coming here for several years for custom framing after switching from Hobby Lobby. Overall, it's been a very good experience. The ordinary custom framing prices are a little high (although not as high as what many mom and pop framing places here charge), but there's usually at least some of the frames on sale to keep the prices competitive. If you want to get a good deal, you do have to check for the sales, which is a bit of a hassle, but the overall experience is consistently good. If you need help, the counter can provide you with some suggestions, and help you move through the framing process. Or, if you prefer, you can look through everything and pick it out yourself. They also have a very neat imaging system that uses a camera to show you roughly what your picture will look like when framed with the matting and border you've chosen, which can be a great way to keep yourself from making poor art decisions. read more

The seasonal stuff is right when you walk in, and the year-round craft stuff is in the back. The staff was very helpful on this trip in helping me locate items and finagle my online coupons for maximum value. The Michael's phone app has coupons available all the time. My only complaint has nothing to do with Michaels, but its shared parking lot -- WATCH OUT or you'll get mowed over by a car haulin' tail to get to adjacent stores. Michaels Framing Department is a disaster! First of all, I was shocked at how expensive the framing was at "70% off"! I took 20 pieces of art in for framing on Feb. 12 and 1 additional piece on Feb. 17. My cost was $7,000 and the pieces were due back to me in 2 weeks. In the course of over 8 weeks time, I did get 11 of 21 pieces back and all of them needed rework due to warped acrylic, tape showing, crooked mounting, mat cut in the wrong direction, mat lint under the glass, not flattening the piece as requested, etc. One piece was never even opened by the framers. I was promised all the work to be finalized on 5 different dates by either the framing employee or the store manager: Feb. 26/Mar. 3, Mar. 8, Mar. 16, Mar. 30, and Apr. 7. Each time I went in there was another excuse as to why my framing was not done. On Apr. 7 when not one piece was ready, I said I wanted my artwork returned and a refund issued. No one was there to issue my refund, so I came back on Apr. 8 and the assistant store manager said they would finish the work and issue a full refund. She went over each piece with me, gave me a time schedule for completion, and said she would be doing all the work. On Apr. 10, when the first group was to be picked up, she called and said the district manager would not allow the refund and completion of the work, even though they were able to do that in the past. I asked that they compromise and give me a significant discount due to them already having purchased the materials and everything I had been through as their customer (especially since they had my money and my artwork for over 8 weeks!). They would not give me any consideration, and would rather eat their costs than keep a satisfied customer. I would be hard pressed to ever step foot in that store again. read more

When I place an order online for store pickup they always make me wait and not expedite my needs. Why don't they have a separate pick up line where waiting customers don't have to wait 30 minutes to be helped? The last time I was in there, there were no frame customers and yet the staff took 30 minutes to fine my order and thought it was funny. I could have pulled it off the shelves myself in that time but the order was from the previous day and the merchandise would have no longer been on sale! I was looking for an acrylic paint sealer here and had no idea exactly what it looked like or what it was. An employee named Jessica put aside her own obligations to help me find out what I was looking for. I should've done more research about what I wanted to buy before I got to the store, but Jessica was unbothered while helping me and made sure that I was finding exactly what I needed. She helped me look for a solid 10 minutes even though she had other things she could have been doing. She was extremely friendly and made this visit incredible for me. It seems that if you've been to one Michael's you've been to them all. They have good holiday ideas, but I mainly go there for framing. Everything seems to be marked up, but there are always coupons available online, form a preious receipt, or in the paper. Just make sure to use coupons and you'll get a decent deal. If you're coming from the North, it's hidden behind another building, but you want to turn left on Montgomery and then take a right into the parking lot. Making a left from Wyoming after the light is difficult. It's in the very back corner of the block. read more

I am frugal when it comes to buying art supplies, and the coupons they have from time to time are exceptional. However as I am in for art supplies- not that craft brick a brac stuff it is not my ideal. It is beneficial to have Michaels because sometimes on the road- I loose my kneaded eraser. It is a pretty standard craft store. Most of them offer classes like the cake decorating one, my mom took my cousin to. Maybe I should give it 4 stars for the convenience factor. But it is kind of like the Wal Mart, of Arts and crafts stores. Sometimes I get panic attacks at Wal Mart. Like when shoppers with carts keep blocking my way. You can get nice quality canvases and Arches watercolor blocks, and some mid range paint lines. I do not believe they carry the higher end artist materials like Sennelier brand or kolinsky sable brushes. read more

I'm a major hobby lobby fan, but when my 11 year old said Michael's was the only place to get a rainbow loom we were off because who doesn't love all those little rubber bands all over their house. Supposedly this is the only retailer to sell the actual rainbow loom. It cost $14.99. Michael's will not let you use a coupon for this particular item-bummer. I like the store and their prices are decent. They are open on Sundays too for all you weekend crafters. The parking lot is a nightmare so use caution. read more

The main reason I like michaels is that it is open on Sunday's when hobby lobby is closed for religious reasons (don't get me started). This store did serve me well for my wedding buying the wedding program template packs that you put in your home printer to create. Looked just like professionally made programs on card stock and somehow managed to find them on major clearance. Also found a cute little salt and pepper shaker favor to give at my bridal shower (two peas in a pod). People are nice here and there is one lady who is obsessive about greeting people at the door at the register... Like crazy about it.. Lol I had some custom framing done here that was really good for 50% (still ridiculously expensive) off but got pissed when the next week custom framing was 60% off.. Ugh...
