I was greeted as soon as I walked in by a nice lady. She immediately helped me find the parts I needed for my mini cub and promptly checked me out. Since it's hard to differintiate one toy/hobby store from the other, I think the organized layout and helpful service is what makes The Model Box stand out.

I walked into the Model Box on 7/12 from Chicago, IL looking for a plane model or two as I…read moreabsolutely love planes. The store is decent sized and very clean. There is a beautiful chocolate lab that sits right at the door, I am assuming it is the owner's dog. The owner or person who worked at the door however was hands down the rudest individual I think I have met this year. I came to the store seeking models that I cannot find and this store had some however the gentleman at the front BERATED my 9 year old son and make me feel like a common criminal. My son picked up a pen that will float it you toss it but the owner literally screamed at my son and asked him what would happen if the pen knocked down the plane, which was attached in four different spots and weighed easily 50-70 lbs and was secured in four different spots and the pen might have weighed .5 ounces, but I digress: the store was decent, some older models but some new. The models are overpriced by about 15%, knowing the Horizon Hobby website pretty much by heart but things like that do not matter to me. I WANTED to spend money here and the guy could have genuinely been having a bad day but I wouldn't spend money here because the man is an absolute asshole. So sir, if you see this review, i don't know what your problem is, but you did it to yourself.

Homewood Toy and Hobby, 2830 18th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35209…read moreWe have been going to Homewood Toy and Hobby for years, and it continues to be one of those special local stores that is a pleasure to visit. One thing we noticed right away is how convenient and accessible the store is. There is plenty of parking, and they have both a front and back entrance, along with a handicap ramp. That may sound like a small detail to some people, but for someone using a wheelchair or needing easier access, it makes a big difference. The aisles are also wide enough for a wheelchair, which is not always the case in small specialty stores. The service is prompt, friendly, and genuinely kind. The employees are wonderfully nice and helpful without making you feel rushed. My brother enjoyed looking around, taking his time, and selecting what he wanted to buy. That kind of patient, friendly atmosphere means a lot. The store has an amazing assortment of hobby items. They carry model railroading supplies, model airplanes, model cars, military miniatures, radio-controlled vehicles, helicopters, cars, and many other hobby and collectible items. It is the kind of store where you can go in for one thing and still enjoy walking around just to see everything they have. Homewood Toy and Hobby also has the feel of a place that has earned loyal repeat customers over the years. That says something good about both the store and the people who run it. We are thankful for a local hobby store like this and appreciate the kindness, accessibility, and great selection they offer. God bless! Mark and Tim Elders

A lady came in saying that her 1 year old son did not know how to use a Nee-Doh squishy and that she had won it at an auction. A few of these coins had more value than the melt value, but the Jesse James working behind the counter said essentially "Take it or leave it, offering far less than "melt" on all the coins, including a few that I graded to be Fine or better. "David" owns and opperates Alabama Coin Shop. He is pleasant, knowledgeable and fair. He patiently explained the relationship between melt price and volatility. David bought 10 of the Morgan and Peace silver dollars for slightly less than melt-Fair, and I left with cash in hand and a new coin shop. If you are a coin collector or have some silver or gold coins to sell, see David at his shop, in front of Home Depot on Highway 31 in Pelham.
