This is a great location that has it all. I'm always impressed at the amount of seasonal crafts that are upfront and center. I've recently started to incorporate a craft into all of my gatherings. Though my most recent craft was a bit of a fail, I was able to get all of the supplies -- modge podge, diamond dust, extra fine glitter -- for our glitter photos. As I said, it was a bit of a fail, but the laughs were unmatched! Join the rewards program, I'm always getting coupons, which helps. I'm not the world's best crafter or even consider myself part of the tribe. However, I have two boys who I need to keep busy and I have found some terrific projects coming here and walking the isles. Some are obviously more expensive than others, but I can often find holiday crafts for the kiddos to do around 2-4 bucks each. That's a bargain in my book. They always have amazing deals (especially if you sign up for the text message deals) and it's tough not to get inspired here. I'm not really artsy so i don't come here frequently, but the few times i have been here they seem to have what i need. they seem to have a nice selection of options. it's a nice sized store. If you sign-up on their website you get emailed coupons. Overall, i think it's a decent store! and much better than stupid Hobby Lobby which throws it's religious and political stances out into the public - I refuse to go there. Proceed with caution when dealing with the custom framing department. My initial customer service interaction was great. I brought in a screen print to get framed, and the framing dept. manager was super knowledgeable and helpful in helping me to choose the proper frame and color matte for my art print. When I returned, I didn't do a thorough job looking over the work done and took it home. Upon inspection prior to hanging the piece on my wall, I noticed that the print was not properly matted, as it appeared wavy with many gaps between the print and the matte. I took it back to the framing dept. two days later, and was first serviced by an employee who seemed uncomfortable and almost unsettled that I had come back to have the frame fixed. She was hesitant and didn't really acknowledge that the work done was poor. Luckily, the same framing manager who first helped me was freed up after helping another customer. She came over and quickly noticed that their work needed to be redone. She said that it would be taken care of quickly. A few days later, I returned to the store and was helped by another employee. She found the frame in storage and as she picked it up she said something to the affect of "omg... this is so heavy." That kind of caught me off guard because the frame itself may weigh 6-7 lbs. max. I wouldn't classify it as being heavy, so I'm only assuming that it was her way of expressing her displeasure that I choose the heavier museum glass vs. the lighter museum acrylic (which was approx. $40 more expensive)..... It was quite a passive aggressive remark that was a precursor to my "customer service" interaction that left me upset and baffled. As I was being shown the work, the employee noticed something off and began brushing away what she thought was dirt or lint on the glass, or perhaps loose dust or dirt within the frame. I too was concerned, but upon her further inspection, it was the fibers and textured speckles/layers of the print paper that looked like dirt... False alarm. Upon further inspection, I noticed that some areas of the frame mounting and matting was improved, but there were still some minor yet noticeable gaps and waves. To my unfortunate surprise, there were ripples and wrinkles towards the bottom of the print that were not there from my first service. It looked like the print was mishandled and wrinkled. When I pointed this out, the employee helping me said to not worry about it and that it was barely noticeable. I began to share my displeasure and continued disappointment with the frame job. She became more defensive, saying that this is normal and that all prints can never be perfectly flat. I said that I have over 10 prints of varying value and thickness and quality of print material, and that I have never seen or heard this before from a professional framer. She replied that all prints are not the same and that this was different and may be prone to wrinkles when being handled. Her tone became more aggressive as she began to speak quite loudly and unabashedly, quick to defend that the quality of this frame work is "normal" and met her standards. After expressing more displeasure, she just became more impatient with me and somewhat gave in by asking me if I would like to speak with the store GM. I was already disappointed and really didn't want to have to extend the discussion at that point. I had to get out of there, so I wrapped up the frame and left, knowing that I would call the store GM the next day. After calling and leaving a message, the store GM got back to me within 10 minutes. After explaining the situation and my experience, she quickly responded by saying to come visit the store when she was in next and that she would take care of the matter. I agreed in hopes that I would get the frame fixed and done properly. When we spoke at the store, I shared photos of the frame and more info about the interaction with the employee from the previous day. The GM was very apologetic and clearly called out that employees approach and inappropriate response and behavior. Since it was my 3rd service for the frame, the GM offered to fix the situation on the spot. I was offered a complete refund for the frame. The GM's approach was so professional and straight to the point that I was completely surprised and overwhelmed. I was offered to have the frame repaired again by the framing department, but after my experience to this point, I graciously declined. I was given the frame essentially for free, but at the cost of having the print slightly damaged. I took the frame to a specialty frame store I've used in the past, and they noticed quite quickly, the poor craftsmanship pointing out several reasons as to why the mounting was off and done poorly. read more

This store always seems to have what I am looking for. They do nice festive promotionals for the seasons and the holidays too. It can feel small and sometimes cramped navigating through the aisles, and it's true that it's hard to find a sales associate, but once you do they always seem to be willing to help you out. I've never had a problem with service or prices. I'd say that they are probalby comparable to most craft stores. I just hate the parking options for this store. I'm always surprised at how many different things are available at Michaels. This edition isn't the nicest but it's not the worst. Worst customer service!!!! There is never anyone around to help you!!!! Called this location to ask about an item in stock. The girl I spoke to on the phone located the item and put it on hold for me. I followed to ask her if I was able to use the 40% off coupon on this item because I know sometimes they have exclusions. She said I was able to use the 40% off. So I drove all the way to the store. When I was going to check out . The Manager says I am not allowed to use the coupon on this item. I said I called before hand and your employee said I could. She was very relentless and just kept saying no no you can't use it. A waste of gas and time to come to a store where you get worst customer service!!! I called corporate!! To my findings their corporate office is just as non-customer oriented as the store it self! They guy from corporate kept putting back on me that the coupon says its cant be used on that item! Idiot you think I would just ask in vain? Seriously!!! Staff is friendly. Store looks nice. But I'm always so disappointed in the frame selection. Countless frames are always scratched up and damaged because they don't individually wrap them all. They leave some inside metal stands so that every time you take one out, it scratches against the metal. Please please please get rid of your stock that is damaged so that you can get new shipments in. Tired of seeing damaged frames. Otherwise, friendly staff and clean store. read more

Michael's in vernon hills is an overall great store. if you love expressing your creative spirit, this is the place for you. look no further because they have so many different options for that purpose.. painting, tie-dye, sculpting, drawing, soapmaking, drawing, and so much more. it's awesome. there are so many different paints, brushes, canvas, sketchpads that i didn't know what to do with myself. there is also a fantastic selection of tie-dye kits.. many many different kinds and 3D paint to get creative on some t-shirts! i'm in my 20's and i usually go to the Vernon Hills Michael's about twice a month. the customer service has been great everytime.. so many youthful employees who truly appreciate people. and by youthful i don't necessarily ONLY mean in age, but in spirit! such exuberance in the employees; from what i see there are mostly girls working there, however the male employees are hardworking and so kind! well most of them... the manager always seems like he is doing 50 things at once, so i never bother him for questions haha he's a manager though what do you expect? and if i'm going to be even more critical, i am going to say that the store could really do without the jewelry/flowers.. this is a store for creativity, not materialism. oh well though, that's capitalism for ya.. also, another small gripe; i do notice that a number of the employees aren't too knowledgable in the arts/crafts field. i think that should be a prerequisite for working there right?.. or at least train them in some courses about some of the more popular products maybe.. there are obviously a few young girls at this store who definitely know what they are talking about and have nice upbeat personalities, which is so nice to see! the guys are also very helpful and some are even cheerful and outgoing, conversing with customers and what not! :) despite some of the less knowledgable employees, they ALL have hard work and sincerity that often makes up for the lack of knowledge sometimes. Michael's in general sucks! I called the Vernon Hills location first, to ask about framing. I was put on hold for 10 minutes, no one ever came on the phone. So I hung up and called the Glenview location. Someone picked up then hung up on me! didn't even say hello! WTH?!?! So I tried the Vernon Hills location again, the woman put me on hold AGAIN, I waited for another 5 minutes and finally gave up. What lazy employees you have Michael's! Shame on you!!! You need to hire new employees who care about the business and customers!!! read more

Layout is bizarre and confusing. One nice checkout lady for a line of 10 people. She's doing her best, but after a call to the floor asking for assistance, the manager guy *yelled* at her that no one would be able to help her from 20 feet away, and then showed up after two people dropped their stuff and left. Wish there was a locally owned craft store around here. Also just noticed the receipt doesn't show you before and after sale prices... and realized that I paid $8.99 for something that should have been $4.99. Check your receipts. read more

Brought in an item that I wanted framed. Unfortunately, the size warranted a custom job. The people in the framing dept were not particularly pleasant or helpful and I had to wait a long time for help. It was very expensive, even with a coupon. When I asked for a hook (which is ALWAYS given at a framing shop), I was told that I would have to purchase it! After reading previous reviews of the Vernon Hills Michaels, I have to say that I agree with some of the comments, but this store is better stocked, visually appealing, the staff is much nicer than the Michaels that is near my home. I love this store. I am a crafter and business owner. With such a large inventory and turnover of products, you couldn't pay me to work there - I'd go crazy, but I love shopping at this particular store. The selections get better every year, there's always a sale, and the turnover of products is fast. It's like a wonderful treasure hunt when I shop there. The only complaint - I don't know whose decision it was to place the Christmas items according to their color, but I found it a bit challenging when looking for what I needed. The old way, by category, was fine. I would suggest patience and kindness when shopping at the store. I've visited many Michaels in various locations and this one is far better than many I've seen. read more

The best Michaels location in the northern suburbs is the Vernon Hills, IL location. I have shopped at a number of Michaels for over 10 years. The variety of products and how they continually bring new ideas/products to their stores is amazing. My preferred store is in Vernon Hills. The staff's assistance is beyond my expectations. They are kind, remember my name and what my craft interests are. Also, they inform me of the new items that will be arriving - especially seasonal items. I adore some of the ladies, Julie, and the Manager of the store. Their assistance is exceptional. Rarely, do I find team members that offer me assistance to my car or just say "hello" as I walk in/out of the store. The sincerity is felt and that's why I continue to shop there. During the holidays, it gets hectic, but they always go beyond the call of duty. I love my rewards card too. Knowing what the daily sales are is great when I'm looking for specific items and pleasantly find a discount coupon I can use. Thank you ladies. Best craft store ever! FYI - I pass the Gurnee location many days and travel to the Vernon Hills store, because I enjoy it so much. read more
