I'd been struggling with…read moredepression and anxiety since I was 15, and now at 20 the consequences of these conditions were having a disastrous affect on my school performance. I went to this doctor because I needed help. I felt like an outsider looking in, trying but failing to be a Human Normal. I hated myself with fury and fire. And I didn't want to want to die, but I certainly longed for an eternal reprieve from the pain. So I went to a doctor. I was in school in Brooklyn but grew up in Texas, and as I was home for the holidays, I started seeing Dr. Alloju. I didn't know the far-reaching and indelible mark this would leave on my life, changing the course completely. I was a bright kid. I read constantly. A bit of a nerd. A writing major. I wanted to write plays and movies. But here's what happened instead: After talking to me for 45 minutes and barely listening, this woman diagnosed me as having Bipolar II Disorder. I wasn't that upset about it because I thought, well maybe she's right and maybe she can help me. Over the course of the next year, culminating in a near-death experience, I was put on these medications concurrently: Lamictal 400mg, Seroquel 350mg, Klonopin 2mg twice daily, and to cap it all off, Geodon 80mg. This is enough medication to sedate an obese elephant. I was 20 years old, 5'2 and 107 lbs. I had to drop out of college because I almost died from this demented drug cocktail. That was a long time ago and I'm still angry. I'm still angry that it took me 10 more years before I was properly diagnosed as ADHD and on the autism spectrum. I didn't need to be on those drugs. I just didn't. When I told her they weren't working, she'd just increase the dosages. Once, during a phone session, she said I sounded drunk and went a step further to label me as an alcoholic. I didn't really drink at the time; my words were slurred because of the sedating medication. The irony, of course, is that Dr. Alloju has multiple DUIs and was on some sort of probation while treating me. I only have flashbulb memories from an entire year of my life. Apparently I almost died from an overdose of these medications. It took many years to try and get my life back from this monster. This is all to say, this woman will destroy your mind, body, and spirit. And she almost ended my life. What she did to me was criminal. Not just malpractice, although it was also that, but it was a deeply immoral negligence and breach of trust. At least if she *had* killed me she might not be practicing to this day. Stay. Away.

I've been at my wits end and finally decided to try to get a consult. This was the closest one in my area with good reviews. Fortunately, my insurance covers everything. The doctor explained everything to me (via video call). I had to give them my list of already tried anti-depressants. The dosage and the time frame and the side effects. Their patient coordinator, Emily, is so sweet and really on the ball, too! I had my first session today. My techs are very friendly and you could tell their priority was to make sure I was comfortable while still getting effective treatment. Session 1: Feels weird behind the eyes. It's not painful but feels odd. It gave a slight headache afterwards. I don't know if you eventually get used to it Session 2: I took my ADHD medicine and this was actually painful. I could not continue the session. I will try again medicine free and update. Session 3: moved my appointments to morning before I take my ADHD meds. This session was not painful. Again, slightly headache inducing. They did a migraine protocol, which is supposed to prevent headache ongoing throughout the day.

The groups are wonderful, and you will learn so much that helps you in the outside world and in everyday life. If there is one thing I want people to know, it's that the staff, program aides, and case managers truly care. They make you feel safe and are very easy to talk to. One of the aides, Lasey, goes above and beyond. She doesn't leave until she knows you're okay and consistently checks on you. She has a calming presence and helps clients who are really struggling find peace and comfort. Can't say enough about Ms. Kara is the person who runs the show. She may sit at the front desk, but she will also become one of your biggest advocates. When she tells you she cares about you or says, "I got you," she truly means it. She wants you to succeed and move forward into a better life. I remember showing up one day, and she told me how pretty I looked and that she was proud of me. She was proud of me and then wrapped me in one of her giant Kara hugs. Even though I mentioned two people specifically, all of the staff are caring and supportive. They won't let you feel sorry for yourself, but they will help you recognize the direction you need to go and encourage you every step of the way. This place and its staff truly helped save me from my depression. Ms. Kara says this isn't your first home, but your second home, and that really reflects how they make you feel. They also offer TMS, and for me it has been a complete game changer. If you are considering getting help for yourself or a loved one, make the call and take that step. I have to specifically shout out Kara, if the was a rating for her I would give her a 10/5. She is the specific reason I kept showing up each day. She gave me counsel, hope, and honestly a reality check when I needed it. I can't even express the impact she had on my treatment and overall life. Without Kara's presence I probably would have just allowed myself to be a lost patient. It was hard to felt seen or that my needs were being met-- but NO matter what Kara was there for me. She changed my view of treatment and the support I needed. She supported me through it all... and with her support I got linked up with Lena, a case manager who truly changed my life. Lena saw me, helped me see myself, and taught me how to love my brain. I'm not sure where I would be without her....and I would have left without Kara before meeting Lena. Kara is literally an angel, she helped me open up my eyes to the help and support I needed. I can't say thank you enough to Kara and Lena!! Also Shirley and Lacey were nothing but amazing. Every Solstice staff member truly cared about the patients. Working in this field has to be incredibly difficult, but the whole staff cared about everyone. Also-- Rachel from the California location is an ANGEL. I can't say enough about Kara, Rachel, Lena, Shirley, and Lacey!! Kara and Lena though, saved me. These were the stage members I worked with the most-- others were nothing but great but didn't work with others often enough to discuss.

It was getting in the way of friendships and work and ruining everything, so I decided to seek help. I decided to give lisas office a call and her assistant sandy set me up with my first appointment. Sandy is a very nice lady and always answers the phone and always maintains a friendly and professional attitude. She also always offers drinks when you come in. The first time I went to see lisa lisa sat me down and asked me what was going on. I explained to her my issue and told her I wanted a solution that did not involve none or little medication. After having said that she still recommended I get on medication. Not to mention the first conversation I had with her felt like she was reading off a script and she did not care. It seemed like her focus was to throw pills at me and get me out of there. None the less I took the script and filled it and started taking the medication she prescribed. The medication helped a little but I did not like the side effects. So on my next visit she gave samples of another medication and I started taking those. When I saw her again she forgot she had given me the samples and was going to prescribe me the first medication with the bad side effects. Very unprofessional if you ask me. And she did it again on another visit. She writes pages when speaking with her but forgets details and information about your issues and what medication you are on. I mean what is she writing down on that yellow notebook if she forgets what pills you are taking? I don't know just my experience. Maybe I just don't know how to communicate. Or I am just picky. She did give me a few discounts. And she is very pretty. She is always wearing skirts and has her legs shaved. If you want a hot physiatrist she's the one for you. But if your looking for top quality care seek else where.
