I was not interested in having a teacher that only shows where to put fingers. Laura covers all aspects of guitar playing and performing. She has many many years of experience as a player and performer. She teaches aspects of playing I never thought of, including relaxation,confidence and focus. She was able to show me things about my playing that I never realized after 30 years of playing. She specializes in metal but she is very accomplished in all styles of playing and in music theory. Whatever it is you are looking to learn she can teach it to you in a way you cannot find from watching videos or reading books. Too bad I wasted so much time and effort trying to advance that way. I am pleased to say I moved from an intermediate player to advanced in a surprising short period of time. I was trying to transition from an instrumentalist (guitar) to a singer/songwriter. I wanted to sing, but was very apprehensive of my vocals so I took the step to seek professional instruction. I was initially wary of the going rates for one-on-one vocal/music instruction so I chose very carefully based on what information I could get about a handful of instructors in the San Diego area. Vanessa's web presence was unique and personal; describing her aspirations, influences, and credentials in a very stylized way. I liked her style instantly and felt this was someone I could relate to. What you will find with Vanessa is someone that is keen on picking up on the nuances of her students ways of learning, and providing undivided attention and encouragement. There is nothing textbook about her teaching style, however her knowledge is solid and deep. Rather a mentor with the best advice and encouragement; exactly what I was looking for. I leave every session feeling more confident with added suggestions/tasks on how to progress. She has encouraged me to read insightful books on songwriting and musicianship, critiqued and improved my own work, paid close attention to the genres and styles that I wanted to attain, vocal exercises and all that, but most of all she has the patience of a saint and a desire to truly provide paths to my improvement. Beyond vocal work, I also wanted to patch up my music theory and decided to do this while taking on the piano (knowing that I could transfer the same concepts over to my guitar). Vanessa is an excellent and accomplished pianist and songwriter with a free flowing style. I already have the dexterity and knew the direction where I wanted my piano music to go so we were quickly able to get through my gaps of theory, apply it, understand, make it click.. and improve my songwriting through the piano and while on my own into the guitar. To mention, I've also sent my daughter to her for instruction and musical awareness whenever I couldn't make a session or had extra budget. I didn't ask her specifically to teach piano but to help me encourage music in general with her. After these sessions my daughter comes home and thoughtfully plays on the keyboard, experimenting, starting to put together melodies.
