I was a sub-lessee of one of their efficiencies for about 6 months, but I've had a number of run-ins with Jim from MCR. At first, it was fine... But only at first. MCR had my number and information, so whenever they were showing the place, I'd get a call the day before. Then, without prior notice, Jim showed up Saturday morning to show the place. He claimed that the office must have forgotten to call me. Okay, no big deal. Then it happened again. And a third time! I began to suspect that MCR was showing the place without notifying me anymore. As a test, I replaced the lock so that only I had the key to the door. Sure enough, within a couple of days, I received a text from my sub-lessor that MCR was locked out from showing the place, and they threatened to remove the lock. I called MCR to ask why they hadn't notified me about the showings anymore. I was told that they were sending notifications, but to the wrong number. I did not change my number during that time. How could they initially have my correct number on record, then have a different one later? Did they record my number on an etch-a-sketch? Anyway, they began notifying me of all their showings after that... Maybe. During the last month of my sub-lease, I get a call from Jim when I'm at work. He's upset that all my stuff is still in the room. He tells me that my last day on the lease was a few days earlier, and he threatened to have all my stuff moved out to the street if I didn't do anything about it immediately. Panicked, I sent my sub-lessor a message to check if my sub-lease end date was different from the actual lease. I went back to the place and found that the door knob had been completely busted through, straight out of a scene from No Country for Old Men. I called Jim to beg for an extra day to gather my belongings. In a chipper tone, he tells me that he was mistaken, and that I actually had a few more days on the lease; my sub-lessor called me later that day and confirmed it. read more

I lived in their 829 Tappan Ave property for two years and can honestly say I was blown away with how good the customer service of the landlord was. On a few occasions we did have issues that required help from the landlord. Notably, during the polar vortex in 2019, the pipe in our radiator burst. On that occasion, and on every other occasion where we contacted them, we got an immediate response and usually had a maintenance guy in there fixing the problem within a handful of hours. Other than responding to us, we were left totally alone the whole time we lived there. While the furnishings are admittedly older, it was all serviceable and, like I said, any issues we had were immediately addressed. The one weird thing we ran into was the quality of the chairs we got. On three separate occasions, the provided chairs broke out from under us during normal use. Neither of us are particularly heavy nor were we using the chairs improperly. The back ends just broke out on them. I assume this is just some weird quality fluke though, and after we threw out the wrecks of the chairs, we never heard anything about it again. Once we moved out, we got our full deposit back. No deductions for cleaning nor replacement chairs, so I would say very forgiving in that regard. All things consider, I highly recommend. read more

I have not had too much experience with rental companies, but I cannot really think of any complaints with this place. Maintenance is polite and quick, with all of my requests being fixed within 24 hours, even though none of them were emergencies. Being an apartment in a college town, it wasn't the nicest place, but the kitchen had been remodeled with new appliances and repairs occurred as needed. Whenever I called the reception was polite and helpful. They were also flexible and helpful in adjusting a lease with sub-lessors. Snow removal occurred almost immediately. The only things I did not like: - the apartment complex itself was kind of dirty, but that was just communal areas, so not places that were used frequently - the elevator was old and broke down frequently... but if it did break down, someone was there to repair it within 48 hours I would definitely return to MCR and I would recommend the company to a friend. read more

Okay, I see that there are some poor reviews here. Very surprising to me. Maybe they had a change in company culture or something. My experience with MCR was nothing but fantastic. I suppose first we should get one thing straight: MCR is doing a very important job of providing affordable rental units in Ann Arbor. These are not luxury lofts, folks. They're fairly priced apartments in beautiful (old) Victorian homes. I have rented for 14 years in Ypsi, Ann Arbor and Chicago. I can honestly say I saw nothing out of the ordinary with the quality of the unit compared to any other similarly-priced apartment I've ever rented. What I can say is that the level of service was much higher. Jim was very responsive anytime I contacted him. He'd get right back and if a service person was needed, he would send them right over. He was hands down the best property manager that's ever been in charge of a unit I rented. At one point I had an issue with my stove and he just replaced the whole thing. When a plumber fixed a leak in the bathroom and recaulked, and I didn't think the caulk job was good enough, Jim sent the plumber back to fix it. He doesn't take any crap, and that's someone I want looking out for my apartment. I really felt like I was in good hands while living there. Thank you, Jim! Another plus is that the folks at the leasing office were super nice and easy to work with. I highly recommend MCR. read more

Horrible. Absolute worst. Jim and Nancy both are horrible. Simply EVIL person.

I don't like to whine about things on the interwebs, but alas, something has to be said in case someone thinking of leasing a residential unit with MCR happens to yelp them. I have leased with them for about a year and a half now. The apartment was picked out by a friend since I couldn't make it into town to see apartments. At the time, the property manager said something to the effect of "oh I know it's disgusting now, but we'll deep clean it before the next lease." So very wrong. They steam-cleaned the carpets further accentuating the huge holes burned into them, painted over everything (toilet, light switches, everything) and called it clean. It took me and 2 other people 12 hours to get it to be livable (and I swear I'm not a psycho clean freak). Then I tried to make dinner, and it turned out that the oven cranked a consistent 550 degrees no matter what you wanted. They agreed that it was a hazard and replaced it. Whatever. I moved on with my life. Then I got told that if I wanted to re-sign the lease the rent would go up 5% because, well, because. Whatever, I couldn't move because of a sticky situation. And then things took a turn for the worse. The heat went out in the house. We were all delivered death trap electric room heaters and told to suck it up for a week or so because the repair was apparently "very expensive." Like my "rent." The maintenance people stopped communicating and finally when the heat came on it was a pleasant surprise walking into an apartment that wasn't 30 degrees to turn on a space heater the size of a quarter. Fast forward to this winter: who would have thought the exact same thing would happen again? This time, it was out for over 2 weeks, again because it was "very expensive" and "very difficult to get the part" (spare parts, a concept that MCR apparently has yet to grasp). I tried to get the temperature up with the small heater and it couldn't manage, so I called the after-hours line and I was informed that it wasn't considered a problem because they already knew about it (so very against the housing code, for those of you who care). Finally, the delivered a heater capable of heating the space and fixed the heat. Phew, that's over (for the 2nd time). So relieved was I that I almost didn't notice that there was no hot water (except every time I tried to bathe or wash dishes). Leaving the house today, I noticed a short note taped to the door saying that they knew about the problem and were planning on fixing it "sometime this week." Which is good, since I don't have to shower for a few more days. Save yourself the stress over basic housing needs, and rent with a company that actually provides the services it promises to its tenants (heat, hot water, and all those optional extras). Avoid them if you want to avoid being as bitter as I am. ;) read more
