I wasn't sure what to expect since I tend to be wary of tourist traps, but this shop is more of a specialty shop as it carries a wide variety of items, from candles to jams, to clothing and magnets. It's very well done. There's three sections in the store, as it has to expand within the historical building it occupies. The first section has the most variety as it sells small items like candles, dish cloths, lights, etc. The second section is clothing focused. The third and most personally interesting sells food. They have homemade fudge and turtle cookies, as well as candy station. There's a wall of jellies and jams, including UP favorites like thimbleberry jam. The people manning the store are super friendly as a huge plus!

The shop is actually quite large with tons of fun and weird stuff. Signs, clothing and all types of collectibles. Outside, the entire surrounding area and lot is filled with something of an Upper Michigan Museum. One that totally makes fun of the "Yopper" life style. (A Yooper is someone that lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). I'll admit, some displays were kind of dumb and outdated, others I didn't even get...but I have to say it was far different than any gift shop I've ever been to. If you're in the U. P. About 5 mins in shopping a man abruptly entered speaking loudly and reminiscing about the last nights drinking and questioned the young lady at the cash register about why she didn't call him and talking about how she missed out on a good time etc. Then the employee and the obnoxious man embraced. I found it completely uncomfortable and inappropriate. This has been one of my favorite places in the past. Unfortunately, this business lost over $200 today because of this. I won't be back.

The trails were well marked and for the most part we could identify the trail. It seemed overgrown in parts, but I get it, they want to maintain the nature. The cove campground we stayed at was on the beach (#2). It was nice. We didn't encounter any moose or wolves...July 13-July 15 2026. We got lucky and got a shelter in Washington campground during our final night. The shelter was clean and pest free. The ranger came by twice to check on us which felt reassuring. We definitely want to return in the future to hike the other side of the island.

This is one of the least visited national parks, and it's not because it isn't worth visiting…read more Rather, it's so isolated that it needs a 3-6 hr ferry ride or a 45-60 min sea plane ride. Even then, there's only one hotel to stay in which is usually booked out pretty far in advance, unless you want to camp with potable water sources not the most reliable. Of course, this is by design in order to preserve the beautiful natural wilderness. I visited in the shoulder season in the first week of June, and there weren't that many people, emphasizing the wild solitude. It seems like all the visitors here are respectful of nature since there was not any litter nor any defacing at all. The trails here are primitive and not paved or lined with gravel. You can see so much wildlife here, from tiny amphibians the size of my fingernail to huge moose. The night sky is amazing with so many stars, and I saw the Milky Way due to the high quality of the night sky. It is very humbling. As a note, limited amounts of foraging is allowed. I didn't take anything, but I saw edible mushrooms and fiddleheads, and later in the season there's wild blueberries, strawberries, and thimbleberries. Even though it is early before the first hatch, the mosquitoes here are ferocious!
