I didn't realize how close I was to Mt Clemens and what it had to offer. I've noticed several interesting places to try food wise. It looks like just a great place to walk around and enjoy. I saw bowling nearby and a musuem, so I know there are other things to do than just eat. I can't wait for the weather to get better so we can try walking around a bit. I love experiencinng new areas with rich history and a great atmosphere. The places we have visited are friendly. I will admit the road was a bit confusing at first, but I imagine it gets easier as you visit more. With similar names I have heard before like Main St and Cass, I imagine we will make just as many new memories here, as the other city areas!

This is a small, but nice art gallery and much needed on this side of town. It's in a historic…read morelooking building with a grand set of stairs leading up to a front door... that sadly isn't in use. The entrance is to the side off the parking lot in a sleek modern addition. Fortunately, the stylistic mash up works better than, say Soldier Field. Anton Art Center looks old timey from the front, futuristic from the back, and maybe awkward from one of the two side views, but it's not terrible or anything. There's two galleries, on the first and second floor, with a little skylight in the middle of the upper gallery. A little gift shop with handmade wares from local artists is just up the first flight of stairs, adjacent to the lower gallery. I've seen a few exhibits here and they're often a mixed bag. They seem to like landscapes a lot. It's usually paintings, though I've seen photography, too, and there's often sculptures on risers in the middle of the galleries. I want to say once a year they have a student exhibition and it's fun to see what young minds and hands have put together. On my latest trip to Anton Art Center I only perused the upper gallery, as the lower gallery had work still sitting on the floor, waiting to be hung. I'm on their email list and I would have known this if I read it, but I was in the neighborhood and decided to pop in. At any rate, there was some really striking paintings of street scenes with pieces of stained glass collaged in that really piqued my interest. I'll have to go back and see them properly displayed. There's usually at least 3 or 4 pieces here that really catch my eye and make me really ponder and examine them, a bunch that are solid but nothing spectacular and a handful that I quietly groan at for being hoaky arts and crafts stuff old ladies might buy at art fairs. But, y'know, not everyone can be art snobs and stuff like that has a right to find it's way to it's intended audience. This is the capitol of Macomb County after all. I wouldn't go too far out of my way to pay a visit to AAC, but once every few months when I know there's new work to see, it's interesting to drop in if I'm in this neck of the woods when they're open. Oh, yeah, bring some change. You'll need to feed the meters in the garangtuan, usually sparsely filled city parking lot AAC sits on the edge of. There's a few nearby restaurants you can walk to when you're there if you're not afraid of a little exercise.

Limited hours and on base, but worth the hassle…read more I had heard of this for years, and of the base for decades; when I realized I would be nearby, I rearranged my schedule so I could go. You have to check in at the visitor's center first (or call ahead, at least three days out, if you're a civilian.) Once you get your pass, follow the road around the edge of the base to the museum. You can't miss the planes parked outside. Park yourself across the street, near where the USMC post is. Inside the museum, you'll find a few small rooms packed with local history. You'll learn about the man the base is named after, unfortunately the first person to die in a place crash. The base has been busy since WW1, and many types of planes have been based here. It is still active. Check out all the models, uniforms, and pictures, and climb in cockpits (kids love this, and can wear the helmets.) Next, head outside. Around the corner is another small building with a replica Wright Flyer and WW1 Spad. The restrooms are beside this building. Now, the real fun begins: walking a field of planes and helicopters. Most are in good shape, and a couple are open for tours at times. Almost all are examples of types based here at some point. Mostly Air Force stuff, obviously, but a few Navy planes. I think I wore my camera out.

The Selfridge Base is on its own a great place to visit, if you enjoy planes and all the supporting structures involved in running a base. It's fairly big and has a lot of interesting buildings and vehicles. If you're here as a tourist, you're probably here for the air show or the museum. The museum isn't big but it's definitely worth the trip. You'll find a number of planes on display with a couple that you can go inside and tour. You'll usually find volunteers who can give you some history of the planes and their service record. Inside is the usual museum type stuff; more artifacts related to military history and a gift store. You probably won't spend more than an hour or two but if you're an aviation buff it's well worth the trip and the small admission fee. The big thing for me was the air show, which I attended last weekend. The show is free and is pretty heavily staffed, with multiple areas of food and beverage service. You'll find a number of planes on display, several you can tour, but get there early or else you'll be waiting in a long line. I found it wasn't worth the wait time in the afternoon. The air show itself is spectacular. It progresses throughout the day, starting with older planes in the morning and working up to jets in the afternoon. You'll see vintage bombers and biplanes as well several acrobatic displays. The event is big - I heard they might have a hundred thousand people there over the weekend, but parking really wasn't that bad and you could pretty much find seating anywhere. The food isn't bad but it is pricey, just remember it's for the show. I heard something about a lockdown on cars leaving but it wasn't true; I was able to leave in the early afternoon. If you're really worried about the crowds, a number of people park at Menard's - enough that is has become catered by an ice cream truck! So hat's off to the military and their service, and for putting on a really pretty amazing event.
