My class is taught by Abby on Wednesdays, who is really patient, an excellent instructor, and an incredible potter herself. The other teachers are great too - I've admired all their work on the greenware rack and have heard good things from other students. As for price, it's very reasonable - $480 for 6 weeks and you can do benchtime if you need or miss a class. For me it's totally worth it to have a little refuge in my neighborhood to hang out and make things. I've already replaced a bunch of my bowls and mugs with handmade bowls and mugs and my friends are now asking me to make them things since I've gotten a lot better since I first started. If you're thinking about signing up - DO IT! It's so worth it.

First, they're more expensive than most other studios in New York City. Earthworks is also more tight and cramped than others. There is little room to move around and no place to set your toolbox that is not in someone's way. WORST of all it's a very uptight place with strange, unnecessary, rigid rules and strict, odd policies. There is a high-strung vibe in this studio and you can feel it when you walk through the front door. There is a new owner and a fish stinks from the head. And why post images on social media of beautiful work that was NOT created or photographed in this studio? They steal images from the internet and post as their own. What does that tell you? There are other studios in the city. PLEASE don't come here.

Today, I did the watercolor activity and was handed a folder with multiple sized paper and some watercolor paint. I started painting right away. The workers are around to refill the paint/brushes/supplies when you're running low. I felt extremely attended to and I had such a good experience. I think that in the future, I might do the air dry clay activity as drawing/painting is not really my forte.

Came here for 2 sets of beginner classes, and coming back for a 3rd time for advanced classes. Very chill, open space. Small studio, and pricier than what you can find, but everyone is extremely kind and I find it more rare to find a place that feels like home immediately. You'd feel so lucky to be in New York, because you have CBA here. I have taken a few courses at the bindery throughout the years and they were all extremely worthy. You get top notch masters in the book art world as your instructors: Barbara Mauriello, Carolyn Chadwick... My personal favorite has always been Susan Mills. She's super friendly and patient. She has given me a lot of wonderful techniques that I'd never forget. For most classes, you will have the opportunities to use their huge collection of fabric and decorative paper. I stumbled upon CBA's classes through a friend's mention, started making books, and now I can't stop. Take a tour, and check out some fantastic work that they have on display regularly. This is my honest review after attending COUPLES Night at Mugi Pottery…read more First, the studio was tall, well lit, ventilated, and we were greeted kindly by the 2 instructors. They checked our COVID vaccination card; process was smooth and seamless. For couples night, we each were given a large slab of clay, 2 rolling pins, and tools for only 1 person. There is NO wheel spinning and the clay comes out of the wash so you stay relatively clean (minus hands). I suggest you come with tight fitting clothing, hair up for long haired students, and sleeveless top so you can really get into the clay freely. I especially enjoyed that way the class was taught: it was done with several small demonstrations; after each demo we were released to do what was demonstrated, and came back together for the next demo. All the while the instructors were visiting each couple to help answer questions a give advice. I love this way so those who pick up the demo quick (me) can just go at it, while the slower people can get the extra help without bogging down the whole class. The entire class went for a little over 2hrs so there is certainly a time constraint. Overall, the experience was AMAZING! A wonderful way the spend the evening with a loved one. Since we typically like working with our hands and have done similar experiences before- we knew how work together and help each other out. So it's important to understand your partner's strengths and weaknesses so you'll have a happy time guiding and giving affirmation with the creations. I noticed several couple getting annoyed with each other and giving a "do whatever the f' you want" response- lol. PRO TIP: come in with something already conceptualized so you can go right to it. The slab was first roll to make a cylinder, and the creativity goes from there. Size, shape, and what you want to do will help save time towards your finished product (I came home afterwards only coming up with more I could have done to my creation!). Some made stemless mugs, jewelry box with a lid, luminary candle holders, jugs- so much you can do from the starting cylinder shape. Go on YouTube to get the technique in your head, check out Pinterest or print photos/ designs ahead of time- all of which would have helped me on my final project. Only thing I would have loved to see: since it was couples night- maybe some cut roses, maybe some wine, more tools, but overall- I HIGHLY recommend.
