I just found out i have cancer. Was on a payment plan with Midamerican but had to default to use that money to cover insurance and prescriptions. Called all the resources available to help me and each one told me they have no funds. Called Midamerican to explain the situation and i was told i could reinstate my repayment plan if i payed them $194 upfront. Now i only have 98 dollars left for the month to live on. I sold a rental unit 5 years ago. The new owner didn't switch the landlord agreement over to him, so now when one of his tenants moves out, I'm getting their electric bill. On top of consistent growing bills without any kind of up in service, today this company upset me beyond all measures. With fiber optics being laid in my area, MidAmerican has had their stupid workers out all over the place. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They "sent a letter" that an employee would have to look at our meter.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our meter is 55 feet from the street, on the side of our house with our driveway, hidden by plants. It's also right against our privacy fenced back yard and 8 ft away from our clearly visible red, black, and white sign that reads: "no Trespassing, no Entry Without Owners permission, beware of dogs. Dogs On premises." This idiot worker of theirs, smoking a cigarette, comes into our yard, goes up to the meter, leans against our fence, knocks over a ton of our private property (were in the midst of replacing our fence, and he knocked down a ton of the fence pallets and stuff that was leaning nearby), doesn't knock on the door, then argues with me, after screaming at my dogs to "shut the F*** up" that he has the right to ignore the sign that's posted when I respond because he's looking for the gas meter. We don't have gas and haven't for a long time (over 10 years). Then as he leaves, he walks through my front yard, even as I'm asking him not to, trampling and breaking my stargazers, my ​​​lillies, breaks a ceramic yard frog decoration, and a metal mantis decoration that my husband's (now deceased) brother made for him over 15 years ago. Suddenly I was default because they tacked on a 56 dollar payment without informing me of it[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. I went ahead and paid the past due amount. And the scam payment shows up again and they won't get rid of the payment that is not owed. I don't know what to do. But never again should anyone make payment arrangements with Mid American Energy. Somehow I was automatically enrolled in their rush hour savings program that takes control of my smart thermostat without my permission. And they conveniently do not have a way to disable that or unenroll on the website under your account. Then you have to use your time to call in and get bounced around because the people you talk to just can't handle unenrolling you for something you didn't sign up for. When you do talk to the right person, they tell you you have to go online to unenroll, but they direct to the wrong place which surely must be by accident, because they definitely don't want the customer to get too frustrated that they give up. After you call them on that, they tell you they will send an email and they will call you when it is taken care of, but if they don't call, you should take more time to call to make sure they have done their job. read more

I'm an electrician in the Des Moines area. Mid American has been one of the worst companies that I have ever had to deal with. They do whatever they want on their own time and do not care about the customers that have no other option for power. Trying to get a power drop to get a service upgrade has proven time and time again to be allegedly an impossible task. If there were any other option in the metro area for power and gas, I would hands down choose that other option. Even if it meant that I would have to pay more money. 0 out of 5 stars. It's a real shame that they are so big and profitable as a corporation. Zero respect for the average persons home or quality of life. It's really nice to be able to tell a home owner that their power will be restored within the next 48 hours. I would never run a business this way and expect to have repeat customers. read more

Hooked up service for my place of business that does not have someone occupy full time. Person promised they would call 30 minutes in advance. Was given 8 minutes of heads up with a voice-mail saying they were there and I would now need to reschedule. The number was a restricted number so no way to contact installer to say I was on my way and just start with meter. Called in and had to be on hold 20 minutes before being told I would have to wait 3 days to get heat to my new shop even though installer did not follow 30 minute heads up phone call policy. Wow we just had a home energy audit done and wow is all I can say.. Corey really brought some great knowledge to the table and walked around our entire home with us showing us the little things that will help save energy and money! He was upbeat, fun, and really personable! He answered every question we had and more! He gave us a bunch of awesome FREE energy saving items, like new light bulbs, power strip, and and new air/furnace thermostat and even programmed it for us! Had a wire hanging down into my yard from an electrical pole. I called them and they sent a contractor out to look at it with the big truck and with a lift on it. He said it wasn't his problem and to call someone else. I called midamerican energy back and they said it wasn't their problem and to call someone else. I directed them to their customer service commitment on their website. Didn't do anything. It's unfortunate too because all it required was to be lifted back up and zip tied. You would have thought I was asking them to move a mountain. Monopolies sure are difficult to deal with as a customer. I don't care if your a monopoly utility company or not. Talk about a monopoly...That's Midamerican Energy Company I had a monthly bill got that didn't get paid for whatever reason. So I went online and paid using the website. The website showed the payment as having gone through with no problems. At the very end of the month, I get a notice from my bank. They said my energy bill had been returned due to insufficient funds. I called Midamerican and spoke with a real human being...They (Midamerican) had to call my bank and verify the payment I posted actually went through. I guess this means they don't trust their own website. The payment did go through. I was told by Midamerican that the the third attempt was done by their system automatically. They said they couldn't stop it from happening even though the bill had been paid. Now I guess they don't have control over their own system? I wish like hell there was an alternative. Best way to describe the past year..... Terrible. Their planning and communication for scheduled outages is absolutely terrible. They do not care at all about their customers. They could have had this work done a long time ago. Last time they came out they sat outside my house in their trucks doing nothing. Nothing.... seriously...never got out and did any work. Multiple times they call and schedule their planned outage. I redo my schedule, then they cancel at the very last minute leaving me with minimal options. Your electric bill, not much to mention other than I never had any issues regarding payment, transfers, or service. I have moved multiple times in the Des Moines area and changing services for utilities was the easiest part of a move. Getting on the phone or internet could get you set up easy and quick. MidAmerican Energy has been so easy to work with and set up an account!! When I had a power outage their site had an easy link on where to report and also estimation on when it would be fixed. You can pay your bill online which is a nice feature. Their customer service is friendly and their rates are comparable to other companies. I do like that they invest in green energy such as the wind farm in Adair. read more

I'd like to know why it takes so long to get power back to us!!! I'm asking a question I already know the answer to!! MidAmerican doesn't want to dig into their profit pocket to hire more crews to get power back to the customers who pay their utilities so they can earn those profits!! It should NOT take 2 days (and counting) to get power back on, and if you happen to live out in the country (where the wires and poles are so old we are lucky to have power at all) it will take even longer because it's not populated enough for them to even care. So shame on us for living in the sticks, because our utility company doesn't give a s*** about us out there!! The last company they hired did a terrible job of fixing the wires after the last storm. Now guess what the exact same location as last time is down and this time NOTHING landed on them! So that means they just temp'd it for a quick fix, and never went back during the last 6 months to repair it correctly. That's because they hire the cheapest people they can find to do the crappiest work so they can make even MORE money than they do now. Something needs to be done!! They shouldn't be able to get away with this kind of mistreatment of their equipment and their customers!!! I didn't even want to give them one star, but it wouldn't let me continue unless I picked one. Imagine that. Even their review page is rigged! I doubt this will even make it out to the page. They are non-responsive and will not take accountability. They made a mistake and need to fix it. If any other options were available would move to competitor immediately. They are a monopoly and feel entitled. Their customer service reps are unhelpful and refuse to accept the mistake. When asked to have complaint forwarded to a manager they refused. read more
