Machias means "Bad Little Falls" in the native Passamaquoddy language. While these falls aren't the biggest, they are still plenty strong and mighty. The Passamaquoddy may have thought they were "bad" because even a small waterfall can make for a dangerous situation. The Machias river and these falls provide sights and sounds not to be missed. You can find the park not far from the center of town and right off of Route 1. Pull into the small parking area and you will hear the roar of the falls immediately. These falls were once instrumental in helping generate electricity for the area. The original granite marker for the Machias Electric Company still stands in the park area. These falls are beautiful and powerful. The water looks to be a copper color which I'm guessing results from the minerals in the surrounding rocks. There are generally no crowds to speak of here although it is a wonderful place in which to spend some time. Bring a picnic lunch and sit at one of the tables provided nearby and revel in the incredible sound of the rushing water.

I visited in January 2026 right after a snow storm and it was frigidly cold, but gorgeous. The vast sea is almost ominous and the views from this spot are just surreal. The drive up can be a bit treacherous in inclement weather, but it is doable and so worth it. Park and walk down to check it all out at your leisure. I imagine this spot is beautiful to visit in any season and there are hiking trails right by the parking area.

However, nothing could prepare us for our encounter with the true hosts of the park. The mosquitoes . No amount of deet would keep them off. To make matters worse, the park showers were very old, a bit creepy and open to mosquitoes flying in. You basically have to shower and fight mosquitoes at the same time. Brush up on your Kung foo skills before arrival. There are many beautiful locations in and around this park. However, in my honest opinion the setting is similar to a plethora of other coastal locations in Maine (not as far north and less mosquito infested). If visiting in July be sure to come prepared with a good repellent and try to avoid using the park showers if possible.

Acadia National Park is one of those places that genuinely lives up to everything said about it,…read moreand it stands apart from the big western parks in a way that makes it its own distinct experience. I found the combination of rocky coastline, dense evergreen forests, and mountain summits accessible within a relatively compact area meant there was always something worth stopping for. The scenery shifted constantly as I moved through the park, and keeping a camera within reach at all times was not an exaggeration. Cadillac Mountain is the natural anchor of my visit. The drive to the summit is worth doing on its own, but I chose to hike the Gorge Trail leading up to it on foot. It was a serious undertaking that included real rock climbing sections and rewarded me with views that felt genuinely earned. I budgeted a full half day for the hike rather than driving. The summit itself has a gift shop, and the views from the top looked out in every direction with nothing obstructing them. A reservation for the Cadillac summit road costs a few dollars and needs to be booked online in advance, so I handled that before I arrived. The Beehive Trail is another strong option for hikers who want something with more exposure and elevation gain than a standard walk. I also built Sand Beach and Thunder Hole into my loop drive, and the carriage roads offered a different pace entirely, peaceful and scenic with no vehicle traffic to contend with, making them ideal for biking if I had access to wheels. Parking was a genuine challenge during peak season and on weekends in particular. Arriving early in the morning was the only reliable way to secure a spot at the popular stops without waiting an hour or more. A late fall visit would hit a sweet spot where crowds thin out considerably, the air is crisp, and the park takes on a quieter quality that peak season cannot offer. I made sure to buy my park pass at the visitor center and did my research on seasonal hours before I went, as services and shuttles wind down toward the end of October.

I visited in Jan 2026 and no one but myself was there. Solitude, quiet, and beauty. Ahhhh. Some say the water crashing against the rocks sounds like singing. It is a very soothing and welcoming sound which I do not think I would ever tire of. It was difficult in some spots to walk as the rocks can be a foot or more deep, but with my snow boots on it was manageable. I am not sure how it would be barefoot or with sandals, but I would certainly give it a go. No restrooms or other amenities. A wonderful Maine spot with amazing scenery and beauty.

Outside of the traditional basalt, granite, etc. that New England beaches tend to provide, Jasper also offers sea snail and crab shells, drift wood, and the occasional beach glass/pottery. After the overcrowded Sandy Beach (south of Bar Harbor in Acadia N.P.), Jasper was a welcome calm and solitude. I would have stayed for more than two hours, however, the only drawback--for anyone, frankly--is the lack of facilities. No fresh water or bathroom within :15 to :20. If you or your family can handle that, Jasper Beach is definitely worth a visit!

Plus bathrooms and changing rooms up top. At night they had a stargazing program here which we came back for which was ranger led and honestly one of my favorite memories of the trip.

There are trash cans, plenty of benches and a couple of picnic tables to use while your kiddos burn some energy. There is a small parking lot by the park, or I'm assuming you could park across the street by the ball field. There are also hooks to hang jackets or diaper bags. No dogs allowed - which even as a dog owner/lover, I prefer for kid parks because not everyone cleans up after their fur kids, and I don't want to have to worry about that nonsense when letting my kid play. Also, there is one of those "free library" cases out front. Love seeing these pop up all over the place. I didn't get to peek at what was inside, but love the idea. But anyway, great park! Often this takes the form of international media programming and information distribution that may be criticized (rightly or wrongly) as propaganda, often because of its asymmetrical nature (to its intellectual critics, as a means of broadcasting the narratives of "Empire" at the exclusion of individual experiences). We might take such examples as the U.S. Agency for Global Media and its oversight of Voice of America. However, such Soft Power Diplomacy can also take more bilateral forms, in which two sovereign states emphasize their mutual contributions over the years, with the motivating principle being that a history of good relations makes for a future of good relations. Funded by the governments of the two participating countries, Campobello Island's Roosevelt Campobello International Park (located in New Brunswick, Canada) provides a fruitful and demonstrative example of positive bilateral relations that are maintained through Soft Power Diplomacy of this type. Occasionally, as with many historical museums in its genre, the more problematic aspects of history are swept under the rug (such as FDR's emergence as a rising star in the Democratic Party at a time when it was known largely as a party of southern segregationists such as Woodrow Wilson and Josephus Daniels, or - also a thorny issue - FDR's wartime persecution of Japanese-Americans). To address these matters, however, is not the point of this museum. Rather, it is to build on FDR's reputation as a wartime president who overcame great odds (both personal and political) and in so doing to emphasize goodwill between Canada and the United States. In this, the Roosevelt Campobello National Park is successful. Guided tours are provided of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's summer home, and there is a Living History presentation available by an actor portraying First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, herself elevated to legendary status as one of the most powerful and influential First Ladies of the United States in history. Both of these features are conveniently close to the park-and-museum's in-house restaurant and cafe, on the lower floor of a lovely little cottage overlooking the water. In the main lobby and gift shop are placards that discuss Canada's aid to stranded American travelers during 9/11 as well as both wartime military cooperation and peacetime agreements between Canada and the United States (such as USMCA, the renegotiated version of NAFTA developed and ratified under the prior US presidential administration). This park and museum are worth attending, though with the same critical thought that ought to be applied in any Public History setting. In this case, Public History serves as an item in both countries' diplomatic toolkit. To this purpose, the museum and park certainly achieve their intent.
