Our granddaughter started at Middleburg Martial Arts in their summer camp program in June of 2014. She fell in love with camp and all the fun they were having and she showed us her karate moves every night. I loved how they were teaching more than kicks and punches. Leadership and life skills are highlighted more than the kicks and punches. By August my husband and I became students too and we have never looked back. Master Lappin has created a family environment there where you always feel welcomed. All the instructors are helpful and encouraging and we love that we are part of the MMA family! I love how all of us students become close and we encourage and cheer each other on. Karate is a team sport here at MMA. Of course, I am the only one who can earn my black belt, but my MMA family, students and instructors, are always there to help me, encourage me, and to support me to black belt. My granddaughter gets straight A's on nearly every report card and her teacher just recently told me that my granddaughter is an excellent role model for the other students in her class. Our child had always stuggled with school, self confidence, making friends and just being social. After being here for the past year through a pandemic and social distancing I was worried there would be very little growth socially (for everyone), but this was not the case. This year has opened up the self confidence to the point we had to pull our child off the dance floor to head home because too much fun was being had while doing it alone with no other family around. Academically there has been a massive change as well. Maturity has something to do with it, but the structure and self monitoring has helped keep the focus high. Usually grades were always D/C range, but we almost saw A/B Honor roll this past grading period (4 points away)! Progression is there and we can't be more pleased. As far as socially, the phrase we used to hear daily was, "I don't like people". Now I see laughing and carrying on in class and hallways with others. Martial Arts had provided Makenna with so much discipline and growth and she's very mature and responsible for a 12 year old. This discipline has allowed Makenna to maintain straight A's through her entire elementary school journey. Makenna was accepted and will attend the Orange Park Junior High Wildcats Accelerated Program starting this Fall. This accelerated program will allow Makenna to earn up to 8 credit hours towards High School. Makenna tested for her Black Belt this past April and will receive her official Black Belt this October from her Master, Master Jan Lappin, and the World Tang Soo Do Association. We love the family atmosphere here! Myself and my two oldest (4 &6) are taking classes and it is a great way to get the entire family moving and active. They also take the time to teach the traditional way as they are a part of The World Tang So Do Association. There is a balance of the teachers being strict and having high expectations while also consistently motivating the students. They have a variety of classes throughout the week, which makes it easy to attend classes consistently while also meeting other commitments during the week. When I first walked through the studio doors, I was a straight F student, that was 10 1/2 years ago. I am now 16 and going into 11th grade with A's and B's and a 3.9 GPA and class rank 45 out of 500 students. While in Elementary and Junior High I was bullied and picked on, my parents knew that something had to be done so they put me in karate. I know now how to standup for myself and fight back with just my words. I have also gained self control, respect, and discipline. My son absolutely loves this place. Initially he was being bullied and was very shy and wouldn't defend himself but after a month of attending classes at Middleburg Martial arts he really opened up and started to defend himself with no problem.
