I was referred to MiLC by hospital staff at Sutter Davis Hospital and by another mom. After seeing several lactation consultants and feeling kind of confused w/ continual challenges, Bethany at MiLC helped simplify everything, bust the myths, and give me and my baby a strong direction forward. We have been comfortably and confidently nursing after just a few visits, and I will likely continue to check in as long as I am lactating. I love that they take many different insurances and have a functional home-like space. They also provide hot teas and adorable teacups. Don't hesitate to talk about postpartum mental health, birth control, return to work, bottles/pumping, or other related topics. They will help where they can and often know where to refer for various things. Bethany is very knowledgeable, direct, and supportive. I love her sense of humor. She has helped me brainstorm and problem solve for things no one else on my care team has been able to. They fill a much-needed gap and do incredible work. This is a long overdue review! I gave birth to my daughter at the birth center in 2021. I was under the care of the midwives from about 20 weeks pregnant to 6 weeks postpartum, and I could not be happier with how everything turned out. It is a completely different experience than you will find at your typical doctor's office. All of the midwives are incredibly competent and take the time to talk through all of your questions. They check you in immediately at the time of your appointment, and I never waited longer than 5 minutes for the midwife to come into the room. Every appointment felt efficient but also compassionate and personalized. They really take the time to make sure you feel seen and heard. My baby girl came during week 41 weeks and 6 days, and I was so nervous during those last two weeks of pregnancy. The midwives were so supportive during this time and monitored me and baby closely to ensure everything was okay. One of the midwives Jenna told me that with each passing day, the chance of me going into labor naturally was becoming greater and greater. That seems so obvious now, but at the time it was exactly what I needed to hear. When my water finally broke and labor started, I was filled with so many emotions. The midwives encourage you to labor at home until you are in active labor since you'll likely progress better in your own space. During this time, they check in with you frequently (and at some point they start checking in with your birth partner when you can't talk on the phone anymore). After being in labor for about 10 hours, I went to the birth center, and Jenna told me I was dilated about 3 cm. She asked if I was comfortable going back home to labor a little more there. I said yes. After another 7 hours or so, I came back to the birth center in extreme pain, and this time she told me I was 4 cm. That's the point where I almost broke. I was telling my husband that I couldn't do it, and I needed help. An epidural or something!! Jenna saw that I was clearly struggling and had exhausted all of my resources at home, so she allowed me to stay at the birth center to use the birthing tub. Those birth tubs are EVERYTHING. My entire body relaxed, and I was finally able to breathe through the contractions. My husband and mother-in-law coached me through the next 4 hours in the tub. At some point I started to get the urge to push. Jenna checked me again, and I had dilated to 9 cm! When it came time to push, I pushed for about 30 minutes, and my baby girl was out. Jenna and the nurse did an excellent job coaching me through the pushing and told me when to stop in order to minimize tearing. During the delivery of my placenta, I had a medical emergency. My placenta broke apart into pieces and part of it got trapped in my uterus (no fault of anyone, I had a rare and unusual bilobed placenta). I started to hemorrhage, and the entire medical team in the room moved quickly to save my life. They were able to remove all parts of the placenta from my uterus and get the bleeding under control. I narrowly missed a hospital transfer, and honestly if they had transferred me, it would have been understandable. They are so skilled and know exactly what to do in an emergency and when to call it. They won't take any chance with your life or the baby's. One thing to note about labor is that the midwife and nurse mostly leave you and your birth team (your partner, doula, or whoever) to labor on your own. They only check on you when necessary. This was no surprise though. They are very communicative about this in your prenatal appointments. They require that you take a natural birth class, and they make sure you are prepared to handle natural labor. Postpartum care was absolutely amazing. They set you up with newborn checkups, postpartum, and lactation appointments (if you choose to breastfeed). They were essential in helping me kick off my breastfeeding journey and thanks to them I was able to successfully nurse until baby girl was 14 months. I am forever grateful to the team at Midtown Nurse Midwives. You all helped us have the birth experience that we dreamed of. Our baby girl is happy, healthy and thriving today. Updating my review now that I've been both a MiLC clinic and birth center patient! My was daughter was born at the birth center in 2023. I was under the care of nurse midwives starting at about 12 weeks. Our family had an awesome experience and wouldn't change a thing. I want to stress that the nurse midwives are highly skilled and evidenced based. All of the nurse midwives and the other team members were supportive, positive and took great care of us. If you are tired of spending 5 minutes at your OB checkups and want more holistic, patient centered care, I can't recommend them enough. You actually have time to ask questions at your appointments and the providers are interested in getting to know you and your family. And as a plus, they took care of all the billing for our lactation appointments after the birth so I didn't have to deal with my insurance. Hurrah! read more

My wife decided to birth with Midtown Nurse Midwives and it was an amazing experience. They are all so kind and supportive and did everything they could to make the process as comfortable as it could have been. The birthing rooms are very nice. There's a bed, bathroom, shower and a very large tub, which my wife loved. The midwives are very responsive. My wife had a 37 hour labor. Once active labor began we were at the birth center from 10pm to 9am and they were of course with us the entire time giving incredible support. My wife had to be transferred to a hospital because of a host of complications that were out of our control. The midwives arranged everything with the hospital and drove with us to the hospital and stayed with my wife until she was in her hospital room. Post-natal care has been phenomenal as well. I've used their MiLC clinic services for my baby who decided to latch for the first time at 5 months old. First, I appreciate that they accept insurance and that my insurance covers this service for me. Second, Natalie is one of the sweetest people I've interacted with and has been crucial in our breastfeeding journey. In a single visit she was able to correct our issues with latch and introduce a new nursing position. By our second visit my little one was able to take 80% feeds by nursing. I cannot recommend Midtown enough. We were underwhelmed with the care from our doctor so we decided to transfer here about halfway through my pregnancy. Simply put, these providers are AMAZING. From the first appointment, I knew we had made the right choice. The care and compassion for their patients is evident in every single visit. The visits are never rushed and they take the time to address every single question or concern that you may have. They even have an on-call email in case something comes up between visits! The midwives are incredibly knowledgeable - I felt extremely safe with them as my care team. On top of exemplary pre and postnatal care (I had an after care appointment with Bethany on Christmas Day!), they allowed me to have the birth that I desired. I didn't even write a birth plan because the practice already follows all the principles that I wanted - skin-to-skin immediately after birth, delayed cord clamping, free movement during labor, consumption of food and beverages, etc. During my actual birth, Jenny was with me every step of the way, incredibly supportive, always asking for consent and respecting my wishes. I couldn't have asked for a better birth experience. The midwives expertly navigated my gestational diabetes, anxiety, carpal tunnel and more. They required us to take an infant care and breastfeeding class which helped us feel more secure bringing our little one home. Finally, they set me up with Elizabeth as a lactation consultant immediately following the birth! I truly feel like I hit the jackpot with this group!!! We LOVED our experience at the Midtown Nurse Midwives Birth Center and Lactation Clinic! My husband and I toured when we were in the first trimester and I immediately knew this was the space I wanted to give birth in. Their facilities and birthing suites have a home like feeling but are also equipped for emergencies. Even though they can't accept Kaiser insurance (they can accept other insurance providers), it was 100 percent worth paying out of pocket. I went to Kaiser for bloodwork, labs, and 20 week anatomy ultrasound, and there was a HUGE difference in the attention and care I received. My OBGYN at Kaiser was kind and informative, but I always felt rushed and that she was in a hurry. My appointments at the Birth Center never felt that way. Another thing we loved is that you see a different Midwife at each appointment so you get to know them all. That way you don't have a stranger delivering your baby! Another great thing about the Birth Center is they help prepare you for a natural birth as well as caring for a newborn and breastfeeding. They make sure you to take a natural birth class (Bradley Method, Hypnobirth, Lamaze, etc). They also provide a 1:1 newborn class and breastfeeding class a few weeks before your due date. My labor was very slow to progress, and the midwives were SO hands on and helpful to get things moving along (the RN too!), but also left us to labor on our own. It was the perfect balance. We had a water birth and I couldn't have asked for a better way to bring our daughter into the world! I HIGHLY recommend a water birth! Their birth tubs are SO amazing and big! And I will always be thankful to Madeline for catching our baby girl! She was absolutely amazing :) We left the Birth Center 3 hours after our baby was born and people are always so amazed when we tell them that! But the Birth Center provides all the newborn and breastfeeding education BEFORE you deliver so you're able to do so! When we got home we had food delivered then snuggled in our own bed with our brand new baby! Being home for the first 24 hours of our baby's life completely uninterrupted to bond was absolutely magical!!! Another wonderful thing about the Birth Center is you have 4 postpartum/newborn appointments with the Midwives and 1 with a Lactation Consultant: 24 hours, 2 days, 10 days, and 6 weeks postpartum, and a lactation appointment 7 days postpartum. During my 24 hour postpartum appointment, which was over the phone, I shared I was experiencing nipple pain so they scheduled me an additional lactation appointment for the next day right after our 2 day postpartum/newborn appointment. This was SO helpful! I've seen 3 different lactation consultants over the course of our breastfeeding journey and loved them all! I HIGHLY recommend the Lactation Clinic for all your breastfeeding needs! They helped me with different breastfeeding positions, getting a deep latch, and helped relieve some clogged ducts. After my final postpartum appointment I was SO sad my time with the Midwives was over! You can also see the Midwives for women's health appointments depending on your health insurance and I would absolutely continue to see them for my women's health needs if my insurance covered it. We plan on delivering our future babies here and I can't wait to go through this experience again! Have you ever heard someone say they can't wait to be pregnant and deliver another baby so soon?! Just goes to show how AMAZING our experience was! We never received this level of individualized attention and care in the medical world. Chosing to receive care from MNM was the BEST decision I could have ever made in my pregnancy. After going through a long and grueling IVF journey where everything felt very impersonal and clinical, I cried happy tears after my first prenatal appointment at MNM? Why? The midwife was so gentle with me. She seemed genuinely excited for us, she spent over an hour talking to me, and asked for my consent before doing any medical task. It was night and day from my 10 minute OB appointments I had previously. What I love about MNM is that the midwives look at everything holistically and really make you feel in control of your care. Little things like allowing you to take your own weight, re-doing BP measurements, and having you collect your own Group B swab all make you feel like a valued patient and not just a number. Towards the end of my pregnancy my BP was reading high, but they didn't panic-- instead, they allowed me to monitor at home and sure enough, it was never a problem again. Many other providers would have skipped straight to an induction in this scenario. When I went into labor, the midwife on call was very responsive over their messaging app (something you would never find with a hospital provider), and spent time on the phone with me to determine when to come in. I labored at the birth center for a while before deciding to do a hospital transfer due to baby's position and maternal exhaustion. While I had been so scared of this outcome, the birth center made it so seemless and peaceful. They continued checking in on me as I labored and gave birth at the hospital. Lastly, the MiLC clinic was equally amazing after giving birth. I had weekly appointments for about 6 weeks postpartum and they helped me navigate some breastfeeding issues. They listened so compassionately, gave me so much confidence and were never judgemental about any choice I made in regards to feeding. Even if you aren't able to birth with them I highly recommend trying them for lactation support! Going to MNM made all the difference in my pregnancy and I can't wait to go back and hopefully experience birthing at their center as well! read more

The team at the milc clinic helped me feel secure in my breastfeeding journey and provided the support I needed to get my 5 month old off of a nipple shield. Took my first-time-mother daughter and grandson here today. Her baby is two weeks old and has been growing fine, but she is nervous about their struggle with breast feeding. The nurse was super. Very reassuring and clearly experienced. She also had a lot of good scientific information to relieve an anxious professional daddy. I just recently welcomed my baby girl into the world with the help and support of the AMAZING team at Midtown Nurse Midwives. This was my 3rd baby and by far the best prenatal and birth experience I've ever had. I primarily saw Jenny for my prenatal care. She took the time at every appointment to address any questions or concerns I had and even offered an ear when I mentioned having some crazy family stuff going on. I never felt rushed through an appointment. She was also very thorough at explaining the risks and benefits of any procedures to be done and made sure I understood what would happen while I was in labor should any issues arise. I felt that I was able to give truly informed consent thanks to her. There staff is small and I met with most of them so I was confident that I would know the people attending my birth and have a personal relationship with my midwife. This was huge for me because it ment that I wouldn't have a stranger who only knows what they've seen in my chart helping me to birth my baby. My labor and delivery were just as amazing. Jenny knew all of my birth preferences and was nothing but respectfull of them. She checked in on me often enough that I never felt abandoned and was very quick to respond when I needed something but gave my husband and I enough space that we didn't feel overwhelmed. Once I got into the birthing tub (which was HUGE!) she stayed within earshot and was able to tell just by listening to me when things really started to get serious. She helped me through some really strong contractions by providing counter pressure and some massage, something I've never had medical staff do with either of my other births. When it came time to push my husband got in the tub with me and with Jenny's gentle and supportive coaching my baby was born with very little damage to my pelvic floor. After my daughter was born we moved out of the tub and onto the nice big comfortable bed where all 3 of us, my husband, myself, and our new baby, were able to lay together to snuggle and bond in comfort. The average time between birth and discharge is only about 4 hours but I felt completely comfortable with leaving when we did and didn't feel rushed. We were all able to get a good nap in thanks to the comfortable bed (as opposed to a hospital bed and a pull out chair for my husband). I'm now 3 days postpartum and the follow up and support provided by Bethany and Jenny has been great. I highly recommend the birth center to ANYONE, weather it's your first baby or your last. Even if you felt like your experience with your previous hospital birth(s) was perfect you will be blown away by the care and support you will get at Midtown Nurse Midwives. read more

I don't even think words exist to express the affection and gratitude that I have for the ladies at Midtown Nurse Midwives. My husband and I were planning for a typical doctor-led hospital birth, complete with an epidural, because that's what everyone does, right? Thanks to my friend who told me I needed to hire a doula, which I did, I learned that I had other options. My doula was Chloe, who happened to work at MNM and she walked us through what our birth experience would look like with a hospital birth, and also what a birth center experience would be, without trying to pursued us one way or another. I knew instantly that I wanted to ditch the mainstream hospital experience for something better and I am eternally happy I did! I transferred my prenatal care from UC Davis to Midtown Nurse Midwives at 30 weeks into my pregnancy. From there I had bi-weekly checkups, and I could not believe the level of care I received from each midwife that I saw. The comparison between a doctor visit and a midwife visit could not be anymore different. At UC Davis I felt like my doctor tried to get me in and out as fast as possible, just wanted a fetal heartbeat, pee sample, and forget the rest. At MNM, each midwife was warm and truly wanted to know how I was doing, if I had any questions or concerns, but most importantly they took the time to go over all the changes that was happening to my body, to baby, and what to expect in the following weeks. They were so thorough that I rarely had any questions and I certainly didn't have any concerns. The birth center has a non-invasive approach only performing tests, US, and vaginal exams when they are needed, which I really appreciated. They also told me what to expect at future visits, like the strep B test, so I was able to prepare and wasn't caught off-guard by anything. The final weeks of my pregnancy I had some things come up, stupid things like gas pain and what I swore was a UTI, and Bethany had me come in immediately each time. She was so patient with me and never made me feel ridiculous for such small things causing me discomfort. She truly cares about her clients and their care and it shows. When my labor finally came, I kept in contact with the MNM team via telephone and an app that allows for secure direct messaging with the on-call midwife. Because my labor lasted about 35 hours in total, I think three different midwives assisted telephonically and in-person throughout my labor progression. The transfer of information from midwife to midwife was seamless as they are such a tightly integrated group. I wound up going to the birth center 3 times (I think) before I was finally far enough in my labor for them to keep me, I was at 2-4 centimeters for, like, ever! Again, they never made me feel stupid for coming in so early, each time they asked me if I wanted to be checked or not, if I wanted to know my progression or not, and they were still caring and warm. The house that is MNM is very clean and has a welcoming, home-like feel. The birthing rooms are exceptional and comfortable and you won't get anything else like it anywhere in Sacramento, but really it's the women that make this place so special. Bethany is obviously passionate about her practice and she as assembled a team of the most amazing midwives, nurses, lactation consultants, and support staff. Even their billing department, Katie is amazing! She went above and beyond to get my birth center costs covered by my insurance. I could go on and on forever about this place. I love these women, I am so, so glad that I went against the norm in search for something better and I am so grateful for the experience I had at MNM. I wish everyone woman was able to have this level of care with the best team there is. read more

I can't say enough good things about this team. After giving birth in a hospital setting I was having issues with breastfeeding and the consultant at the hospital was not helpful. I was feeling pretty hopeless and in less than 3 visits my baby was breastfeeding with no pain or bleeding. I am so grateful for the amazing support during a really difficult time. I just want to say Thank you for them first :) I called for help since I was having problems with my breastfeeding with my boy. They put me in next day! He had been doing great but my breasts were not happy with nursing. I had a few clogged milk duct in a month and tired and sad to nurse. I met Alisha and she was very nice and so helpful. I was glad I went to ask for help. For new moms, breastfeeding is super challenging and we don't know what is right or wrong in any ways, this place is really good for asking for help! First of all, I am not the least bit surprised that all of her reviews here are stellar, I too have nothing but praises to sing about my visit with her. I love when I feel like a majority of bases were covered during an appointment, it makes sense to me when your practitioner can only scratch the surface of your situation, due to time constraints and/or lack of genuine interest. Wait a sec, that's horrible and it should never be like that, which is why I am head over heels for how Beth operates. I had the most COMPREHENSIVE exam with Beth, than I have probably ever had. She takes her time, she truly wants to hear what your concerns are and she wants to thoroughly address them. I love that and frankly, who doesn't? I can't say enough about how wonderful Beth was/is (without sounding like some weird psycho stalker) so I will quit while I am ahead. My husband and I toured MNM right after we got pregnant with our son in November 2019. I was anxious about choosing a provider for my pregnancy and the moment we were sitting in the waiting room I felt more peace than I was expecting. The facility itself is beautiful, everything is decorated with care and it feels very calming. We both work in healthcare and every midwife we had an appointment with communicated on our level. Their education of patients is next level: they are very thorough and make sure that every part of care that you consent to is well-informed. When the pandemic started they did a great job of communicating changes in care to us, some appointments became virtual, and everything was scheduled far in advance. I loved all of our prenatal care, especially the appointment we got to have with the lactation consultant. I went 41wk5d with my pregnancy and the plan of care was clear, they made sure I understood that what my body was doing was normal. When I finally went into labor Bethany was the midwife on call. She was reassuring and I really appreciated that she kept telling me to labor at home and rest between contractions. Between MNM and the birthing class they recommended we take, we were well-prepared to cope with an unmedicated labor. Baby boy's heart rate kept dropping when I started pushing and they were concerned for him, but they calmly navigated the situation and I wasn't even aware that they were getting emergency equipment ready. I did hemorrhage after delivery, but they acted quickly and were proactive in the management of my bleeding so it resolved without me having any major side effects. 3 hours after delivery we were headed home! I loved how they focus on postpartum follow ups, multiple appointments before the 6 week visit. They helped me manage my postpartum mood disorder with medication and referral to therapy. I continued being their patient for women's health; I had my IUD inserted there, and that was a good experience as well. Each midwife/RN has their own personality, some can be more intense than others, but I felt completely confident in their abilities and was so thankful that I trusted my team of providers. read more

If you're looking to have a natural birth outside of a hospital setting, I cannot recommend Midtown Nurse Midwives enough! The experience we had here with our second child was truly amazing. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the exam and birthing rooms are so comfortable, just like being at home. Our first was born in a hospital and we had to stay for 48 hours after birth. With our second, at MNM, we were home 5 hours after giving birth! It was amazing to be home as a family so quickly, especially during this time with all the COVID restrictions in hospitals. read more

I've been thinking about how to approach this review for quite some time now, and am hoping I can adequately put my experience into words. I started with MNM at the beginning of my (second) pregnancy. I was left with a weird feeling after my first prenatal appointment; I had a blood draw and was left with massive bruises and the blood draw itself was really painful. Keep in mind I've had plenty of blood draws and have never experienced bruising or pain, even while pregnant. This happened for both blood draws I had here. The second one was even worse though, she had to do both arms and when she wasn't getting anything, she was tugging at the needle, moving it around while in my arm, it was bizarre and extremely painful. I expressed that it was really hurting and she acted like I was overreacting. My whole point of going with the birth center rather than the OB was for a more natural and connected experience. Appointments here are 30 minutes but when they'd run late with another patient, my appointment times were cut short. At my last appointment here, the midwife was 13 minutes late and then rushed me through all my questions, giving no explanation or insight on anything I asked, and hurrying me up on to the table to check baby's heartbeat. Then she measures the fundal height and goes "Perfect, you're measuring right at 26 weeks which is great since you're 25 weeks"... I was 21 weeks. It felt like she had no clue what patient she was even talking to and felt so impersonal and disappointing. I think this place is probably great if you essentially want the same experience as you'd have at an OB (impersonal, rushed care), but want a natural birth. The final straw for me was when I emailed the midwives about terrible pelvic pain that was so severe walking and working was becoming difficult; I expressed that it was making me depressed as well. Bethany (the director and most brash one of all of them, yikes) emails back, saying nothing about the fact that I said I was depressed, and basically said "you're only 20 weeks, it's only going to get worse, severe pain isn't normal though". I was 23 weeks. When discussing this issue with a new provider, I was promptly diagnosed with SPD, which can be a debilitating condition while pregnant. Bethany and her team did not take this seriously and basically brushed me off while I said I was in severe pain, just telling me severe pain isn't normal. Awful experience. I regret not leaving this practice sooner, but I'm glad I finally listened to my gut and got out of this place. Although insurance would have fully covered my care here, the thousands of dollars I'm spending to have a better experience are well worth it. If you're looking for a birth center, there must be a better one in the area. It sucks to feel so disrespected and ignored at a time as vulnerable as pregnancy. read more

They get five stars for a good reason!! I had so much trouble nursing. Like SO MUCH TROUBLE. Bethany was really helpful in sleuthing things out, helping me make more milk, and finding my child's tucked up tongue tied tongue. It wasn't all roses and magical moments, and Bethany really helped normalize my experience and my ultimate decision to feed my child formula. Without help from MILC, I think my child would have unnecessarily suffered. All the pediatricians I visited were of little use. Thanks, MILC! Three years later and I have a happy happy energetic child. I recommend MILC to anyone with postpartum concerns! They do other services too, and I suspect the level of quality in those areas is just as amazing. read more

I was pregnant during the peak of COVID. Originally, my husband and I were assigned to Sutter with our Tricare insurance but with all of the restrictions at the time, I did not feel comfortable having my first child at the hospital for the fear that I would be alone. The hospital situation in general made me very uncomfortable. When we found out that Tricare covered CNM's we found Midtown when I was 30 or so weeks pregnant and after a tour, we switched immediately. Their facility is so comforting and homey and my husband was permitted to be at all of my appointments with a mask. All of the midwives are very knowledgeable. During my labor and delivery, let's just say that I, personally, was not prepared (even though I thought I was :) ) but despite that, the staff were incredibly supportive and encouraging and my son made it here safe and sound. We had a lot of trouble breastfeeding but Bethany and the lactation consultants were also incredibly supportive and for the first several weeks after my son was born, we basically lived at MNM :) MNM has such a special place in my heart because between COVID and being pregnant/delivering and going through postpartum for the first time without family support, MCM took very good care of us. My son is almost one and I can say for a fact that I would never have wanted to be elsewhere and when we decide to have another child, it will certainly be at MNM. read more

We had an amazing experience with MNM. We started care at 8 weeks, and continued on through the birth, to lactation consulting. The staff were warm yet extremely knowledgeable and competent. I went here because of a referral from my baby's pediatrician. I had issues with the online preregistration form because it required an application that my computer couldn't load so I went on 20 minutes early to fill it out on their iPad. It had so many questions on there I suggest you go in extra early to do it. I have an iPad myself and don't normally take long to fill things out on there. It was stressful to answer all the questions on their registration while my baby was screaming from being hungry. My consult was with Bethany the owner. I felt like she seemed really distracted and more focused on charting than actually spending time with me and my baby. I looked forward to getting a pre and post feeding baby weight so that I could see how much my baby got while nursing. She got the pre weight but decided not to do it in grams cuz she knew my baby's feeding problem was due to a tongue tie. I was disappointed when she refused to do a post weight. Then she only showed me one position to feed my baby and I felt really awkward and still felt like he wasn't nursing properly. With a brief glance over her shoulder she just reassured me that he was eating just fine. Then I tried to ask her for advice on managing plugged ducts and her simple answer was "just treat the cause". Well how am I supposed to know what caused plugged ducts in the first place?! Anyway, I really wanted to like this place since I drove 40 minutes to come here. I didn't want to leave a review but I'm sure others would find this info useful. I was disappointed in the service of this place and I felt like it was a waste of $180 for a rushed, half-assed, one hour consult. I honestly learned more from LCs on YouTube and from La Leche Leagues website. After coming here, I'm reluctant to go to any other LC because I'm afraid of having another average experience. read more

Where do I even start??? I originally planned to have my baby the same way I had my first, 11 years previously, at the hospital. Every time I went to a doctor appointment I was more and more disappointed. It seemed that they did not care to listen to my partner and I concerns and were rushed in and out of appointments. We just felt like another number to them. Around 28 weeks I decided enough was enough. I always thought water births were so amazing but never believed in myself to do anything like that unmedicated. After speaking with a couple of friends who had amazing out of hospital births themselves, I felt a boost in confidence although some close family members thought I was crazy. I started looking into midwives and that's when I came across Midwife Madeline's virtual tour video on IG. Although the birth center is 45 minutes from my house I just knew this was the place I was going to give birth. My partner and I had our first virtual visit with Jenna over Facetime and when we got off the phone with her we decided to officially make the switch and beyond happy that we did. The difference between appointments with the midwives versus an OB is night and day. They always listened to us, addressed concerns and you can tell they all genuinely care and love what they do. Since it had been a while since I had a baby and it was my partners first, we decided to take all of their classes. It was a great refresher for me and I also learned a lot since the first time around I was so young and didn't know what I was doing. They continued to put confidence in me that our bodies are made for this and that there was nothing to be afraid of. When it came down to the final days, we had one false alarm in the middle of the night which I felt disappointed about because i felt bad that i woke the on call midwife (Madeline) up and i was so ready to have my baby. Madeline met us at the birth center and didn't make me feel stupid for thinking it was the real thing. She let me know it was prodromal labor and not to hesitate if I thought it was time again. I went home and about 20 hrs later the contractions grew stronger. I kept going back and forth with myself about going because It was the middle of the night again and I didn't want to be wrong. So after procrastinating i finally told my partner to drive up there. This time Elizabeth met us at the birth center. The moment I walked in the door my water broke, she asked if she can check me (which side note, I love how they ask permission before they touch all on you as a doctor would do), I let her check me and I was 9 centimeters!!! She got everything ready and about 20 minutes later I hopped in the tub, nurse Rachel showed up, they dimmed the lights for me and almost immediately I started pushing. Although the pain was intense, the atmosphere was so serene and most importantly, I felt safe. I never once was in fear and knew that I was mentally, emotionally and physically equipped to get the job done. While pushing, their calm voices were very reassuring for me that everything was going the way that it was supposed to and after few times of pushing, my daughter was Earth side. The entire time that I have been going there they have all been so attentive and their communication with one another is so seamless, which i find to be very important as well. I am forever indebted to each and everyone of them. I'm getting teary eyed just writing this Thank you all SO much for making this such a beautiful experience. I just recently saw Liz too once baby came for breastfeeding help and the tips that she gave me were VERY helpful. Again THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! It took me a long time to be able to write this review but I believe it's something women who are looking at places to give birth naturally should read. I loved the care and all the women until I went into labor. I came to the birth center and was 4cm. I was coping very well and even sleeping through contractions! The midwives would leave me and my husband to relax and check on us periodically which was great. Then things took a turn for the worst.at 7cm Either my baby turned, or was always sunny side up and no one knew (they didn't check or tell me she was turned) I was then having back labor, screaming and crying and writhing in pain... they would come support me for a little bit.. but then leave my husband to be the midwife, to talk me off the ledge, to make me drink water, to put pressure on my back. I was in the worst pain of my life for 5 hours... I never progressed past 7cm. During this time Bethany came into the room and was whispering things in my husbands ear like "this is normal" (it was not) and "she's got a long way to go" which is not supportive at all. I felt so alone. I asked to go to the hospital (I screamed someone take me or kill me) they had us DRIVE 20 mins unaccompanied and with no support to a hospital my husband had never been to. They all packed up their own bags like they couldn't wait to go home as I'm screaming and crying in the parking lot telling them I can't do it. The only person who gave me any support was the nurse who came in who wasn't even a midwife. She was telling me my body can't break me, holding my hand and trying to support me. I wish I could thank her. Then as we are walking In out of the birth center to OUR CAR, not an ambulance... Bethany is saying how they already have my post baby appointment set. Which is a classic sales move in my book... get someone's mind off of the bad shit happening and on to the next. Once I finally got to the hospital I was so dehydrated my urine was brown, I had tons of blood in it. My baby was dehydrated and not doing well. My bag had been broken for well over 13 hours and the doctors were concerned about an infection. My babies heart rate was dropping and they had to do a CSection. This was the worst experience of my life. I will forever be scarred by this. Midwifery is supposed to be women helping women give birth through support. Also the person who did most of the "work" Was a student, she was checking the babies heartbeat and doing mostly everything which I had clearly stated I was fine with her being there, but in no way did I think she would be doing the majority of the work....They didn't take my severe pain seriously, they left me alone to labor with my husband when I was NOT coping well. I spent 7k to have my baby there, and 7k to have my baby at a hospital. Not only do I have emotions scars, but it's changed my opinion on midwives forever. Not only this, but after everything the owner never reached out. It was Jenny who wasn't even there during my birth, she was very nice but the damage is done... not one of the midwives who was there reached out.. Go somewhere else. *edit for clarification after owner responded below. Her response goes to show all they care about is business and not the person. She couldn't even address my concerns and only cared about what other people will read. This is how I felt during labor. That I was not cared for. The price is an estimated amount (it was around 7k) I never said they are miracle workers, i understand people transfer, but I felt neglected. Her cold response goes to show what I mean. read more

You get a lot more individualized attention that is specifically tailored to your needs than lactation consultants at the hospital or support groups. Speaking as someone that has given birth at home, with a midwife, four times, I can say I would NOT recommend Midtown. My daughter's experience with Midtown was far less than stellar. First off, we were lied to... On our first visit we asked if she could have whomever she wanted in the delivery room and we were told that she could, within reason. Upon arrival we were barely out of the car and being asked, "Who is staying?". When we replied, "All of us" (Mom, Dad, husband, and sister). We were told that that was not going to be allowed. Also, we asked at our first appointment if we would be forced to wear masks when delivery time came and were assured that we would not. Yet upon arrival Jenna actually argued with my son-in-law (as my daughter is laboring) that "no one would have told us that". We felt like Midtown got their money and then immediately started trying to push her off to UC Davis. The level of care received was minimal at best. The midwife told my daughter that she was 100% effaced and only dilated to 3 cm FOR HOURS. Yet when we finally did go to UC Davis, she was only 60% effaced and dilated 6cm!! Wait, WHAT?! First of all, the power of a group of women is unimaginable. They have exceeded all expectations of what I wanted with a natural birth. Bethany, Jenny, Sioban, and every staff member there made me feel completely comfortable, relaxed and welcomed. It is there goal to make sure we are taken care of. I had no idea that breastfeeding could have so many challenges. I met with Bethany prior to my delivery (which I recommend everyone do) and I thought I had it all figured out. However, after my baby was born, there seemed to be something wrong, but I couldn't figure it out - so I called Bethany. Turns out that I had low milk supply due to a complication from labor. Without Bethany's guidance, I would have likely been one of those women who gave up on breastfeeding. Bethany met with me multiple times and stayed in touch with me over email as I was doing the new parent freak out. Every time Bethany appeared at my home she was like a magician with a bag of tricks - thanks to her I knew what questions to ask my mid-wife and pediatrician. Because I was working with a lactation consultant my child's doctor gave me more room to work things out. Due to Bethany I knew to ask for a prescription to help with milk supply and she suggest alternative methods of delivering milk to my son while I pumped, and pumped to get back on track. I also really like that she is a RN in addition to being a lactation consultant. Within a month Bethany evaluated me and said my milk supply had normalized and is currently helping me "wean" the baby of the bottle supplement that I had been pumping, so that baby will soon be a totally breastfed baby. This process was challenging, but there is no way I could have done it with a professional lactation consultant like Bethany.
