A few hours after birth at Midtown Nurse Midwives
    Meg S.

This is a long overdue review! I gave birth to my daughter at the birth center in 2021. I was under the care of the midwives from about 20 weeks pregnant to 6 weeks postpartum, and I could not be happier with how everything turned out. It is a completely different experience than you will find at your typical doctor's office. All of the midwives are incredibly competent and take the time to talk through all of your questions. They check you in immediately at the time of your appointment, and I never waited longer than 5 minutes for the midwife to come into the room. Every appointment felt efficient but also compassionate and personalized. They really take the time to make sure you feel seen and heard. My baby girl came during week 41 weeks and 6 days, and I was so nervous during those last two weeks of pregnancy. The midwives were so supportive during this time and monitored me and baby closely to ensure everything was okay. One of the midwives Jenna told me that with each passing day, the chance of me going into labor naturally was becoming greater and greater. That seems so obvious now, but at the time it was exactly what I needed to hear. When my water finally broke and labor started, I was filled with so many emotions. The midwives encourage you to labor at home until you are in active labor since you'll likely progress better in your own space. During this time, they check in with you frequently (and at some point they start checking in with your birth partner when you can't talk on the phone anymore). After being in labor for about 10 hours, I went to the birth center, and Jenna told me I was dilated about 3 cm. She asked if I was comfortable going back home to labor a little more there. I said yes. After another 7 hours or so, I came back to the birth center in extreme pain, and this time she told me I was 4 cm. That's the point where I almost broke. I was telling my husband that I couldn't do it, and I needed help. An epidural or something!! Jenna saw that I was clearly struggling and had exhausted all of my resources at home, so she allowed me to stay at the birth center to use the birthing tub. Those birth tubs are EVERYTHING. My entire body relaxed, and I was finally able to breathe through the contractions. My husband and mother-in-law coached me through the next 4 hours in the tub. At some point I started to get the urge to push. Jenna checked me again, and I had dilated to 9 cm! When it came time to push, I pushed for about 30 minutes, and my baby girl was out. Jenna and the nurse did an excellent job coaching me through the pushing and told me when to stop in order to minimize tearing. During the delivery of my placenta, I had a medical emergency. My placenta broke apart into pieces and part of it got trapped in my uterus (no fault of anyone, I had a rare and unusual bilobed placenta). I started to hemorrhage, and the entire medical team in the room moved quickly to save my life. They were able to remove all parts of the placenta from my uterus and get the bleeding under control. I narrowly missed a hospital transfer, and honestly if they had transferred me, it would have been understandable. They are so skilled and know exactly what to do in an emergency and when to call it. They won't take any chance with your life or the baby's. One thing to note about labor is that the midwife and nurse mostly leave you and your birth team (your partner, doula, or whoever) to labor on your own. They only check on you when necessary. This was no surprise though. They are very communicative about this in your prenatal appointments. They require that you take a natural birth class, and they make sure you are prepared to handle natural labor. Postpartum care was absolutely amazing. They set you up with newborn checkups, postpartum, and lactation appointments (if you choose to breastfeed). They were essential in helping me kick off my breastfeeding journey and thanks to them I was able to successfully nurse until baby girl was 14 months. I am forever grateful to the team at Midtown Nurse Midwives. You all helped us have the birth experience that we dreamed of. Our baby girl is happy, healthy and thriving today. If we have more children in the future, we would 100% choose this birth center again!

I cannot recommend Midtown enough. We were underwhelmed with the care from our doctor so we decided to transfer here about halfway through my pregnancy. Simply put, these providers are AMAZING. From the first appointment, I knew we had made the right choice. The care and compassion for their patients is evident in every single visit. The visits are never rushed and they take the time to address every single question or concern that you may have. They even have an on-call email in case something comes up between visits! The midwives are incredibly knowledgeable - I felt extremely safe with them as my care team. On top of exemplary pre and postnatal care (I had an after care appointment with Bethany on Christmas Day!), they allowed me to have the birth that I desired. I didn't even write a birth plan because the practice already follows all the principles that I wanted - skin-to-skin immediately after birth, delayed cord clamping, free movement during labor, consumption of food and beverages, etc. During my actual birth, Jenny was with me every step of the way, incredibly supportive, always asking for consent and respecting my wishes. I couldn't have asked for a better birth experience. The midwives expertly navigated my gestational diabetes, anxiety, carpal tunnel and more. They required us to take an infant care and breastfeeding class which helped us feel more secure bringing our little one home. Finally, they set me up with Elizabeth as a lactation consultant immediately following the birth! I truly feel like I hit the jackpot with this group!!! Thank you to this incredible team for expertly guiding me through my first pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. I am forever grateful. Thank you Jenny, Bethany, Elizabeth, Madeline, Jenna, Talia and the rest of the team!!! You all rock!!!

My husband, myself, our brand new baby, and our AMAZING midwife just before we left the birth center.

For my anatomy scan of my final child, I was scheduled for an ultrasound at the Sutter Maternal…read moreFetal Medicine. This was an emotional scan for me as it was our first son and last child to join our family and I had wanted my husband there for support and also to be a part of that experience. I was told there was only 1 visitor allowed per their policy but that day my younger child was sick and older child did not have care early in the morning since daycare was closed. I had called at 7am about an hour before my appointment to inquire about keeping my children with me for the appointment and was told by the service person on the line she would speak to a supervisor and get back to me. A few minutes later the receptionist on the phone said it was allowed and she said noted in my chart. Ultimately she said it's up to the care team but she informed me the supervisor approved and was noted in my chart for the visit. I went at 8am with my children and husband and was told that I was only allowed 1 visitor nonetheless despite what I was told on the phone (despite my efforts to call early). The policy sign did not specify the age of the visitor and they told me that I could not even bring my older child despite her being well behaved at 6 years old bc they now said visitor had to be 18 years and older. This was extremely confusing to me as a patient and obviously I took time off work to come to this appointment and made it months in advance. The whole appointment from the front desk receptionist to the ultrasound technician-- they made it about themselves, not caring about what the patient thought, overriding me and implying I was the problem and said I was causing the appointment to run late and the technician said "I'm already rushed" even after I said "I'm sorry to rush you." The staff receptionist lead (I don't know her title, they don't introduce themselves but she was an African American lady) actually even blamed me and treated me as a child berating me saying "you need to put your phone down right now! Our policy does not allow FaceTime or phone calls. My staff can hear you from the hallway and it is causing danger to my staff." I was only talking to the ultrasound technician and expressing my concerns. There was no yelling on my part, just some sadness and soft sobbing. I didn't understand why there was no empathy. They blamed me for rushing their staff and causing their staff to be in danger telling me to take a deep breath and chastising me rather than calmly explaining the reasoning behind their policy or showing me the policy. Also the sign out front said "1 visitor allowed" but did not specify the age or any specifics involving children when there are no other choice for caretaking. What do single parents do? If the policy is so strict and enforced, the expectation should be laid out to the patient ahead of time and the clinic both failed to do so and on top of that blamed the patient. This is unprofessional and unacceptable, even after I apologized. I didn't feel like I had anything to apologize for. There is no empathy with the staff and they really did not have to tell me to put down my phone when I was not recording or FaceTiming or calling. I was quietly tearing up and crying the whole appointment, even though it was supposed to be a happy occasion. My baby was healthy and I was looking forward to it for months, only to be ruined on the day of by the unprofessional attitude of the staff who was not clear on the policy, creating strain on my family and my emotions, blaming me for not understanding and treating me like a second-class citizen. The clinic also did not offer options to reschedule but just said "you can choose to go to a different place if you want but we have this policy here and you can either follow it for leave." I had no other choice but reluctantly followed. Still there was no apology or empathy given the highly confusing and strenuous situation esp for a pregnant woman. They didn't offer to reschedule and just said "you can go elsewhere where the policy is different and allow more than 1 visitor or kids" This is for: 1625 Stockton Blvd. Suite 205 Sacramento, CA 95816

My husband and I are new residents to California and I am currently pregnant with our first child. We have no family in the area. I had a phone consult scheduled with the owner, Ms. Michele, on January 5th, 2026. She called me on time and we both mutually agreed to move forward with the on-boarding process for doula services for my pregnancy. She requested that I call my insurance company and gather the information for her in an email. I did this, and sent her an email the following night, on January 6th. I didn't hear anything from her, so I sent a text message to both her work and personal cell phone number on January 9th. No response. At this point, I am 37 weeks, and anxious to move things along for doula services. The weekend and Monday goes by, and I still have not received a reply. I decide, as a last attempt, to call her. I called both her work and personal cell phone and left a voicemail on each line on Tuesday, January 13th. Nothing. Shame on the owner, Ms. Michele, for stating that she will move the process forward and said she will have a doula for me for my birth. She lied. She disclosed to me during our consult that she is a mother herself and had over twenty years of experience working as a L&D nurse. This provided me great relief and happiness, only for it to be crushed when she never replied to my messages. How can someone with this sort of background make a promise and then not follow through? Ms. Michele should be ashamed of herself not only on a professional level, but also on a personal level. This seems to be a wider issue with the Doula profession as I was ghosted by another local Sacramento doula company as well as the Volunteer Doula Coordinator at Mercy Hospital of Folsom.
