A few hours after birth at Midtown Nurse Midwives
    Meg S.

This is a long overdue review! I gave birth to my daughter at the birth center in 2021. I was under the care of the midwives from about 20 weeks pregnant to 6 weeks postpartum, and I could not be happier with how everything turned out. It is a completely different experience than you will find at your typical doctor's office. All of the midwives are incredibly competent and take the time to talk through all of your questions. They check you in immediately at the time of your appointment, and I never waited longer than 5 minutes for the midwife to come into the room. Every appointment felt efficient but also compassionate and personalized. They really take the time to make sure you feel seen and heard. My baby girl came during week 41 weeks and 6 days, and I was so nervous during those last two weeks of pregnancy. The midwives were so supportive during this time and monitored me and baby closely to ensure everything was okay. One of the midwives Jenna told me that with each passing day, the chance of me going into labor naturally was becoming greater and greater. That seems so obvious now, but at the time it was exactly what I needed to hear. When my water finally broke and labor started, I was filled with so many emotions. The midwives encourage you to labor at home until you are in active labor since you'll likely progress better in your own space. During this time, they check in with you frequently (and at some point they start checking in with your birth partner when you can't talk on the phone anymore). After being in labor for about 10 hours, I went to the birth center, and Jenna told me I was dilated about 3 cm. She asked if I was comfortable going back home to labor a little more there. I said yes. After another 7 hours or so, I came back to the birth center in extreme pain, and this time she told me I was 4 cm. That's the point where I almost broke. I was telling my husband that I couldn't do it, and I needed help. An epidural or something!! Jenna saw that I was clearly struggling and had exhausted all of my resources at home, so she allowed me to stay at the birth center to use the birthing tub. Those birth tubs are EVERYTHING. My entire body relaxed, and I was finally able to breathe through the contractions. My husband and mother-in-law coached me through the next 4 hours in the tub. At some point I started to get the urge to push. Jenna checked me again, and I had dilated to 9 cm! When it came time to push, I pushed for about 30 minutes, and my baby girl was out. Jenna and the nurse did an excellent job coaching me through the pushing and told me when to stop in order to minimize tearing. During the delivery of my placenta, I had a medical emergency. My placenta broke apart into pieces and part of it got trapped in my uterus (no fault of anyone, I had a rare and unusual bilobed placenta). I started to hemorrhage, and the entire medical team in the room moved quickly to save my life. They were able to remove all parts of the placenta from my uterus and get the bleeding under control. I narrowly missed a hospital transfer, and honestly if they had transferred me, it would have been understandable. They are so skilled and know exactly what to do in an emergency and when to call it. They won't take any chance with your life or the baby's. One thing to note about labor is that the midwife and nurse mostly leave you and your birth team (your partner, doula, or whoever) to labor on your own. They only check on you when necessary. This was no surprise though. They are very communicative about this in your prenatal appointments. They require that you take a natural birth class, and they make sure you are prepared to handle natural labor. Postpartum care was absolutely amazing. They set you up with newborn checkups, postpartum, and lactation appointments (if you choose to breastfeed). They were essential in helping me kick off my breastfeeding journey and thanks to them I was able to successfully nurse until baby girl was 14 months. I am forever grateful to the team at Midtown Nurse Midwives. You all helped us have the birth experience that we dreamed of. Our baby girl is happy, healthy and thriving today. If we have more children in the future, we would 100% choose this birth center again!

I cannot recommend Midtown enough. We were underwhelmed with the care from our doctor so we decided to transfer here about halfway through my pregnancy. Simply put, these providers are AMAZING. From the first appointment, I knew we had made the right choice. The care and compassion for their patients is evident in every single visit. The visits are never rushed and they take the time to address every single question or concern that you may have. They even have an on-call email in case something comes up between visits! The midwives are incredibly knowledgeable - I felt extremely safe with them as my care team. On top of exemplary pre and postnatal care (I had an after care appointment with Bethany on Christmas Day!), they allowed me to have the birth that I desired. I didn't even write a birth plan because the practice already follows all the principles that I wanted - skin-to-skin immediately after birth, delayed cord clamping, free movement during labor, consumption of food and beverages, etc. During my actual birth, Jenny was with me every step of the way, incredibly supportive, always asking for consent and respecting my wishes. I couldn't have asked for a better birth experience. The midwives expertly navigated my gestational diabetes, anxiety, carpal tunnel and more. They required us to take an infant care and breastfeeding class which helped us feel more secure bringing our little one home. Finally, they set me up with Elizabeth as a lactation consultant immediately following the birth! I truly feel like I hit the jackpot with this group!!! Thank you to this incredible team for expertly guiding me through my first pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experience. I am forever grateful. Thank you Jenny, Bethany, Elizabeth, Madeline, Jenna, Talia and the rest of the team!!! You all rock!!!

My husband, myself, our brand new baby, and our AMAZING midwife just before we left the birth center.

What all is involved on a first appt? I have severe anxiety when it comes to stepping foot inside any doctors office that my blood pressure sky rockets. I am hoping that the appts are more geared towards the baby and not me. Thanks!!!!

My husband and I are new residents to California and I am currently pregnant with our first child. We have no family in the area. I had a phone consult scheduled with the owner, Ms. Michele, on January 5th, 2026. She called me on time and we both mutually agreed to move forward with the on-boarding process for doula services for my pregnancy. She requested that I call my insurance company and gather the information for her in an email. I did this, and sent her an email the following night, on January 6th. I didn't hear anything from her, so I sent a text message to both her work and personal cell phone number on January 9th. No response. At this point, I am 37 weeks, and anxious to move things along for doula services. The weekend and Monday goes by, and I still have not received a reply. I decide, as a last attempt, to call her. I called both her work and personal cell phone and left a voicemail on each line on Tuesday, January 13th. Nothing. Shame on the owner, Ms. Michele, for stating that she will move the process forward and said she will have a doula for me for my birth. She lied. She disclosed to me during our consult that she is a mother herself and had over twenty years of experience working as a L&D nurse. This provided me great relief and happiness, only for it to be crushed when she never replied to my messages. How can someone with this sort of background make a promise and then not follow through? Ms. Michele should be ashamed of herself not only on a professional level, but also on a personal level. This seems to be a wider issue with the Doula profession as I was ghosted by another local Sacramento doula company as well as the Volunteer Doula Coordinator at Mercy Hospital of Folsom. I believe doulas are a valuable asset to a woman's birth experience, however, I will not be wasting my time anymore trying to arrange one for my pregnancy.

As a doula, she is extremely capable, professional, and supportive. When I first connected with Shalin via videochat for a consultation, she instantly made me feel comfortable. I decided to go with Shalin based on how experienced and knowledgeable she seemed, as well as how comprehensive her doula services package was. Over the course of my pregnancy, Shalin visited my house several times to educate my husband and me about the birthing process, evidence-based approaches to birth, and different ways to prepare my body for birth, and to go over my birth plan. The whole process made me feel really prepared for the birth and gave me a greater understanding of what I wanted for the birth. I also appreciated that I got to know Shalin more during the pregnancy so that she didn't feel like a stranger at all. In fact, she is so warm and friendly that she felt more like a friend! She didn't push any particular views on me but wanted me to feel supported in my birth preferences.  When I went into early labor, Shalin was very responsive and kept checking in on me to see how labor was progressing, and when we decided to go to the hospital, she was super quick to meet us there. She was prepared in every way and set up lights and candles for the room. The hospital room was a vibe and very peaceful! Since I gave birth in a hospital setting, it was also important to me to have someone who could help advocate for me. When my hospital care team asked me to do certain things, Shalin checked in with me to see if I wanted to proceed with what they were asking. During the labor, she suggested different laboring positions and did counterpressure and other comfort measures, which helped me tremendously in coping with the pain. With Shalin's help and support, all my birth preferences were met! I had such a positive, empowering labor - something I never would have thought possible after my first delivery experience (without a doula).  I loved having Shalin as my doula and I highly recommend her! I can't stress enough how having her as my doula made such a difference to my second delivery experience. I am so happy with how everything went and really couldn't have done it without Shalin!

She did a very thorough interview with me and my husband, fully understood what experience we are looking for and made amazing recommendations. She recommended me with a hospital I wasn't aware of that has great staff and with midwifery care. Since I was late stage pregnant (32+weeks), she pulled all her strings to help the new hospital accept me as a patient. And all the way up until the delivery date, she was only one text/call away for any questions I had. The birth was still painful, but with the midwifery care, Tashina's preparation with me and my husband, the hot tub setup, and her being there as my advocate, the birth was quick, smooth, and no manual extraction of placenta! My second son was almost 8lbs and no tear or stitches. Even weeks after birth, Tashina came visit and always checked in with me to help me with breastfeeding issues, baby colic issues etc. Tashina is so knowledgeable, caring and loving. I had planned to have a typical doctor-led birth at a hospital with an epidural and Chloe walked me and my husband through what to expect at the hospital and I felt a lot of comfort knowing that I'd have her as an advocate to be sure I wasn't pressured into doing anything that I didn't want to do by hospital staff. Knowing that Chloe also works at Midtown Nurse Midwives, my husband and I asked her what our birth plan experience might look like should we choose that route and we instantly knew that the birth center birth was what we wanted. Now, you might be thinking, if the birth center has doulas, why would I need to hire one? Yes, you need to hire a doula! Chloe came to my house and supported me and my husband through early labor, which I feel like was the worst part for me! She did what she could to keep me comfortable, keep me hydrated, but most importantly - to help my labor progress. My labor lasted about 35 hours in total and when she wasn't with me, she was on the phone coaching my husband on what to do. In the end, I wound up getting the unmedicated birth that I wanted and know there is no way I would have gotten through it without Chloe. She is truly amazing! Chloe also checked in on my new little family a day or so after my babe was born and brought us the most delicious lentil dal, which lasted us several meals. And she dehydrated and encapsulated my placenta, which was very convenient with her attending my birth, she was able to take it straight from the birth center and then deliver with my postpartum visit. I think of her dearly when I reflect on my birth experience, she helped bring our daughter into this world and that is so special to share with someone. If we ever decide to have another babe, I will most definitely hire Chloe again, she is truly amazing! From the bottom of my heart, thank you Chloe, we love you!!!

She is a dream come true for our family. I trust her wholeheartedly and during labor she offered her entire heart, energy, and soul to me and my family, and for that we are eternally grateful. Upon meeting Chloe, it was clear to us that we had found our doula - she's thoughtful, calm, knowledgeable, and listens carefully. When we met with her before our son's birth, she took the words out of my mouth which gave me peace of mind and built my trust in her incredibly quickly. This is so valuable because birth is such a sacred and vulnerable space. She was available for questions throughout my labor and her IG is full of positive, empowering and helpful information. Fast forward to labor. I went into early labor on a Thursday afternoon and gave birth early on a Friday morning. Very late on Thursday evening, we called Chloe and asked her to come to our home because I began to question my own abilities. She arrived promptly and immediately helped put my partner and me at ease so I could continue to labor at home and progressed to 9cm upon arrival at the hospital. She worked so well with my partner. She provided ongoing comfort measures, reassuring affirmations, and helpful suggestions to keep my confidence up and keep labor progressing at home. This allowed my partner to be my cheerleader which is exactly what I needed him to be as my number one supporter. Throughout the process Chloe amplified my wishes and needs allowing me to have the most empowering birth I could have wished for. I truly believe that Chloe was the difference between a repeat C-section and a VBAC for me. She was determined to help baby and me into positions that allowed gravity to help since my first labor was deemed "failure to progress" after 3 days of labor and 10cm dilated. Her suggestions not only helped this labor progress quickly but made me feel in charge of this birth. I still chat with Chloe during this postpartum period to ask questions and because she's just that awesome. Related, if you are interested in placenta encapsulation, I also highly recommend her for that. Thank you, Chloe, for all that you did for me and my family. I know any family is in excellent hands with you
