They really care about teaching to the child the way they learn best. The small class size allows for each kid to work at his own pace. My son was very excited to be able to start some algebra in the 5th grade. They get recess at local parks and lots of interesting field trips. Even though the school is small the director always strives to have a variety of extra curricular options available. Everyone there goes the extra mile to make sure the kids are getting what they need.

Each child is treated as an individual and learning programs can be tailored to each child's needs, as the class sizes are intentionally kept small. The kids spend plenty of time outside, where they can play and discover and interact with the world around them, instead of being cooped up inside all day. The teachers make learning exciting and collaborative, focusing on each child as an individual. My older son is flourishing at Kingfisher after a very difficult experience at a Montessori school. He is advanced in some areas and lacking in others, and Debbie and the teachers at Kingfisher have been wonderful about updating us about his progress and working with him and with us to ensure that he gets everything he needs, both academically and emotionally. My younger son is more typical and fits right in as well. Both of my children are happy and excited about getting up in the morning to go to school, and are allowed to be creative and share their enthusiasm for learning. We are completely happy with Kingfisher and will keep sending our children there for as long as we can.

We discovered Hess Academy when we were looking for a preschool program for our son. By the time it…read morewas time for him to begin Kindergarten at City Schools of Decatur (he was zoned for Winnona), we were so in love with Hess that we decided to stay. There are so many things that are great about Hess, but here the three things that work especially well for us. First, plenty of healthy outside time. The kids begin the day with 20-30 minutes in the playground before they need to into their classes. Lunch and recess are another hour, and everyone finishes the day with another 15 minutes in the playground. Second, classes are capped at 12-14 students with two full-time teachers. The individualized attention that our son's intellectual and emotional needs receive are, therefore, outstanding. Finally, the kids (and teachers) do not go through the horrible Standardized Testing that has become the norm at the Public-School system (although teachers and educators have been saying for years that this kind of testing is pedagogically harmful). There is so much more to love about this school--like the devotion that Hess teachers show their students and the sense of community. Just go and tour the school!

I have two that have dyslexia that came in remediated, but they do have a remediation program. There is academic support. Those teachers are amazing and push into the classroom in elementary school. the teachers are supportive, communicative, and available accessible and connected with our kids. My kids are involved in sports music, dance, arts , theater. There are a lot of opportunities to be outward facing service projects, mission trips. While I appreciate that, my kids are taught the Bible and a relationship with Jesus and the teachers reflect that my kids also have a diverse group of friends that come from different religious backgrounds, economic, backgrounds, and political backgrounds, which aren't emphasized, but there is a variety of demographic. My son instance has friends that are Hindi, Punjabi, agnostic. My kids are taught not just about Christian world views, but different religious world views, different scientific views like evolution in biology (which someone for some reason said they aren't taught) and they're taught from a scientific standpoint not trying to dispute the scientific theory. As rhe get older, they have opportunities to question, debate, express their opinions in different classes and that's encouraged because they don't want the kids to be programmed robots. As I stated earlier, their families of different economic backgrounds, but that is not something that is known or something that at least for my kids they don't care if they have a lot of money or don't have a lot of money. It's just not important in the grand scheme of things. They have a diverse group of friends and I find that a lot of my friends kids find their niche. They find their people because there's so much variety and diversity. Well, they do a annual fun fundraiser. You could donate a dollar and still participate with zero judgment or not at all. There is a level of understanding from learning disabilities to economic to religious backgrounds that is accepted without judgment. Of course there's gonna be jerk kids at every school, but that's the minority and not the majority.

He stated there are things that happen that he was not happy with and did not want to go back. Had nothing to do w the teachers or administration. We are minorities and I have always been treated with the outmost respect from each principal on all 3 levels. I am disappointed some May feel this way but me and my family bleed GAC all day. I don't go to this school lolz =P And I don't even have kids yet…read more But, I live in the area and my sister, who does have a lil girl, is looking to move closer to me (Yay! =)), and wanted to check out some of the elementary schools in the local area. She's not looking to move til the end of summer, but getting her ducks in a row early. :) Anyway, I went with her on a tour of the school to check it out. It's pretty nice. It's definitely an older school, but I kinda like that - it gives it a nice old-world feel of the days when innocence was a bit more the norm. All of the teachers and staff seemed so nice and friendly and they were all very knowledgeable. The way it's built, there's a cute little courtyard in the middle of the school and that's really neat. They have a big cafeteria, with one of those stages up front :) A nice big gym in its own building for the kiddies to play their games and exercise. A very nice little library. The outside is pretty huge out back, with some basketball courts and a nice wooded area. The playground was pretty lacking though. But when I asked about it, they said that actually they are building a new, better and bigger one this very month! They have a dedicated system for disadvantaged children and they do participate in the pre-K lottery thing, which my sis was really excited about =P. It's literally right in the middle of a big neighborhood (it borders on mine), so it's REALLY convenient if you live in the area. And of course being Asian, we were concerned about racial diversity - but no need - walking around we saw students from everywhere, so that's really nice too.
