This shopping area is the ultimate destination for fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and more. Just the atmosphere of being here makes me miss my Aunt so much. Even if you won't be cooking when you visit Manhattan you must experience the streets in Chinatown lined with the delicacies you won't find anywhere else.

They have been written up several times by a variety of well-established publications (it is not just me) and they are also listed on the menus of some of the best restaurants in town. They are perhaps the most patient of farmers. If you are not sure or can't figure out how to pick out your fruits and vegetables, they will help you and/or teach you how to select them yourself. Any vegetable they sell seems to be best in class. Also on the list of vegetables/herbs I think they do well, includes, but is not limited to: basil, cucumbers, green beans, summer squash/zucchini (which I hated until I tried theirs) eggplant, broccoli, romanesco, pumpkin, brussels sprouts and fennel. They have recently started to weather the cold and sell greenhouse tomatoes and other winter veggies during late fall and early winter. Their veggies are better than anything you will find in the grocery store. It is worth the trip to the Greenmarket just to stop by Sycamore. From late May to November (now December) they can be found the the Union Square Greenmaket at 16th Street and Union Square East.

The good news is this Farmers Market is open through December 22 and they have my favorite Meredith's Bread. The bad news is having to go so far for my favorite brand. The picture I attach shows the yolk (lighter being Knoll Krest) vs Wholefoods (Nellie's Free Range). I just don't trust the product, a yolk should have a darker color if fed wholesome diet on a "free range farm", additionally the egg white is fragile and more like what I see in cheaper versions of eggs I've had to 'make do with'... I tried Original Sin's hard ciders recently and I must say I walked away very impressed as I…read morethought that the ciders were pretty unique and flavorful! Steve and I had two different ones that we really enjoyed! One of the ciders was their Black Widow. This was a good cider and had a different spin than traditional ciders since it involved fruit other than apple. Actually apple wasn't excluded from the Black Widow cider but blackberries were added to this cider making it pretty sweet but not too sweet. There was still tartness there. But our favorite cider of the two was the main cider they had, the Original Sin Hard Cider. This just straight up an apple cider with a perfect dash of sweetness and tartness this cider was so good I could have had more than one glass. It didn't even exactly seem like a cider but more of a white wine as it had the more delicate traits blossoming on your tongue just like a good white wine. Or in this case just like an expertly made cider. This one cider is what brought the star score all the way to five stars we were that impressed by it.
