Every year the market gets better and better, and since the start of this seasons markets in May, it feels like the whole city gets here early and makes a Sunday at of it as well. Some can't miss vendors: -Between Two Slices. They make incredible and unique sandwiches that you just need to try. Get the chicken salad, it's my favorite. They even make homemade english muffins. They sell out early, like within the first 2 hours usually, so get there when the market opens closer to 10 if you can! -The newest plant vendor that sets up near the fountain. I got all of my herb and veggie plants from them this year and they are thriving. All incredibly reasonably priced as well. -The mini bagels! Cute, delicious, just as expensive as a regular sized bagel. Doesn't make sense but I am going to get them again next week. -The iced coffee stand also by the fountain! It's become a ritual to get a coffee before we start circling. -The bakery right at the park entrance (on Palisade Ave, across from Busy Bee). You can't miss the long line, but it will move fast. They have incredible sourdough bread and pastries. It's a great market with something for everyone and every need. Come with a list otherwise you might just get a little something from everyone.

This is probably the best farmers market I've been to in Jersey. The first reason is atmosphere. The park is recently renovated and the layout and pathways are perfect to setup stalls. The folks shopping here seem to be nice, neighborly people supporting local farms, buying break, and enjoying their Sunday. They have a community garden that hosts kids activities, plus a large park and splash pad. Across the street is an awesome coffee shop (my favorite in the neighborhood) Mod Cup, and you'll find Bread & Salt one block away. Secondly, there's a great variety in vendors. Flower stalls, a very popular matcha stall (visit her pop up at The Alps instead), farms, dog treats, bagels, pickles. fresh pasta, bakeries with 5 different kinds of sourdough... Good stuff. If you're in the vicinity, I highly recommend spending a couple hours here on Sunday. Worth the trip!

I visited right after opening, a little after 10 am (many businesses do not open until 11am, like my beloved Seed+Mill). My first impression was that it reminded me of a food hall similar to what I experienced in various cities in Japan. The variety of foods available is impressive and you really can find it all here, from an Italian grocer to Japanese to the various food stands offering everything from BBQ to the best halvah I've ever had. And there's a Pearl River Mart and other places to find gifts and souvenirs. My favorite of this ilk is Muji Market, which has all the Japanese amazing things! Also of note: very clean bathrooms. It reminds me of the bathrooms at Grand Central, a lot of stalls, sinks in the center, only much, much more pleasant. I'll be back as soon as I can. It's silly that I didn't come here when I actually lived in New York.

The physical location is open to 10pm though most shops and restaurants inside are closed by 8-9pm, only a handful of places like Chote Miya, Miznon, and La Devocione were still open though also wrapping up business for the evening. Wanted to highlight a few more stores here for this review: - Moon Man Foods: a Brooklyn-based company, they have a small stand about a third of the way thru the market (walking east to west), selling southeast Asian kaya jam, which is coconut-based and contain eggs, coconut milk, sugar, starch, and salt. They come in pandan, ube, and Java palm sugar (aka gula melaka) flavors. - Pearl River Mart and Pearl River Mart Foods: back in the day they used to be located in SoHo on Broadway, though rising rents made them relocate, and I'm glad they're still around! They carry all sorts of Asian-inspired decor, serving ware, stationery, and their "Foods" location downstairs is combination of Asian grocery, bubble tea (Milk & Tea), and Korean and Chinese snack/takeout stands (Kimbap Lab and Mao's Bao's). - Muji Market: this is a smaller location that carries a narrower assortment than your average Muji (house wares, basic apparel, accessories, kitchenware, snacks), though they have a full cafe serving coffee and matcha, simple Japanese lunch items like bowls, sandwiches and bento. Cafe prices seem a little higher probably due to the location. - gallery art: there is a small whitewashed hallway gallery of maybe a couple dozen small pieces by local artists, featuring NYC-centric photos, sketches, paintings, multi-media. Found this fun and entertaining!

I love this local, family owned produce store in the Central Ave. Shopping area of the Heights…read moreneighborhood. It is small but has everything you need such as fruits, vegetables, some bread like Portuguese rolls, canned goods, eggs, milk, even cheeses and packaged cured meats like sausages and hams. No fresh meat or seafood but I go to Pampita Meat Shop (great Argentine and Americans cuts) and the seafood shop across the street for those. The price is great - I would buy 2-3 bags full of fresh groceries to feed two people for the entire week and more and the total still usually comes out under $50. When I was living on the other side of JSQ, I used to frequent another similar produce shop called "Mira Fruit & Farm" on JFK Blvd (I wonder if it's owned by the same person?) We are talking 4 grapefruits for $1, a package of blueberries for $1, a bag of 3 bell peppers for $1, 6 limes for $1 price range. Some things are pricier here, like bananas, which usually cost 69 cents or even 79 cents per pound when I can get it for 49 cents per pound at Shop Rite in downtown. Regardless, I like supporting small mom and pop businesses so I will continue to be a regular here! I like to juice at home often so this is a great place to source celery, cucumber, carrots, apples, ginger, lemons, beets at very affordable prices since I go through them quickly in large quantity. I have no doubt the owner of Young's Farm is Korean or at least Asian because they have a limited but good selection of Asian goods too like Korean Shin Ramyun and Vietnamese vermicelli noodles, fish sauce, sriracha, and jarred kimchi in the refrigerated section, etc. My tip would be to go there early on Saturday (before 9 am) because by the afternoon on Sat and Sun, all the freshest pickings will be gone. Also, while the prices are super cheap, look and pick carefully to make sure your box of berries doesn't have mold growing in it and try to pick the freshest one. Many of the packaged goods like berries, cherries, tomatoes that are outside the shop on the stall as "specials" are already in advanced ripe stage so eat within 2-3 days max. They are perfectly find to eat, just shorter shelf life. My guess is the store operates in a very similar way as some of these new delivery companies like Imperfect Foods and Misfits Markets do in terms of sourcing their products, by taking less "perfect" produce directly from farms and producers and resell at the store at cheaper costs. I always have good fun poking around what's available here at least every other weekend.

My wife had to explain to me that Aloe is also used in cooking. I have only known it for treating burns. They also have a lot of Goya products. The woman that waited on me today was very helpful. I had gone in looking for strawberries and blueberries and was unable to find them. She told me they would be back in stock in the next couple of weeks. It is a nice little fruit and vegetable shop for your last minute items if you are on the Avenue. They have a good selection and their prices are reasonable. As for parking, try the Dunkin Donuts parking lot right around the corner or you can go behind Burger King. They have a large parking lot though you do have to feed the meter.

There's also a section of local artists selling things like tshirts, knickknacks, art pieces like paintings and collages. Regardless if I buy anything, I just love walking around the market looking at all the fresh, colorful produce, thinking of what delicious dishes could be made from the plethora of ingredients. Many top restaurants in the city book directly with vendors here, which says something about the quality of the products. Still open Mon, Wed, Fri & Sat. Usually the most vendors on Saturday I think. From 8am to 6pm, though on certain days depending on weather some vendors might start taking down their stands earlier. For more info: https://www.grownyc.org/greenmarket/manhattan-union-square-sa

Support your farmers. There is a great variety of veggies and fruits - there are at least 3 stands that cater to this type of offering. There is a pickle stand too that had loads of pickles, olives, and other brined items (free samples too). There is a bread vendor on occasion though they do run out quite often and by the time the 9-5 crowd gets over there not much is left. And then there is Lima family farms which sells meats and eggs - excellent quality but also can run out of things after 5pm. I'd love to see something else, a bit more variety, though I certainly appreciate the offerings that are there. The space is a little awkward but I am sure it works for the farmers because of the high traffic area. Bring cash because most vendors prefer this method of payment. You'll be sorry if you end up there without any in your pocket!

Corn, greens, and herbs are available basically as soon as it opens in June, but it's best late in the summer/early fall when there's a dozen types of (heirloom) tomatoes, all kinds of squash, peppers, greens, onions, beets, squash, melons, stone fruit, apples, etc. I think the nuts stand is the only place with protein (no eggs, beef, chicken, pork, fish), so that's kinda weak, but you can get all that stuff at the other markets (Thursdays Uptown on Hudson St. and Saturdays on Garden btw 14 & 15), though I don't think the produce selection is as good as downtown Tuesdays.
