The captain was great and slowed the boat down, when he saw wildlife. Our trip was perfect - perfect weather and so many creatures to see. We saw more birds than I can remember or name. LOL Of course we saw Puffins!! They are very cute, tiny and fast! Bring decent camera if you are going to try to get pictures of them in flight. The boat was buzzing with excitement when we saw them. They slow the boat down and drive slowly around the island so that both sides of the boat can get a chance to see and take pictures of the birds and researchers on the island. During our trip out - we saw a gigantic sunfish and a few pods of porpoises and many seals/sea dogs. So cute!!!! There is a bathroom on board (I didn't try it). They also have a galley, where you can buy food and snacks and souvenirs. We didn't buy anything. There is an upper deck and lower deck. We sat on the upper deck, since it was a beautiful day and there were still seats left. Definitely wear sunscreen and a hat and make sure the hat fits tight or is tether to your clothing. The wind gets pretty strong as they speed up. If you have trouble with motion sickness, you definitely should take precautions. They had staff with vomit bags ready. They prefer kids not vomit over the edge if possible. LOL Total time on the boat is about 2.5 hours. It takes about an hour to get to Easter Egg island. Parking - if you are ok to walk...you may want to try to parking other than where they recommend - which is literally right at the boat dock. The convenience is great - however, it's $50 to park and they pack cars in TIGHT. When we do this again, we will definitely find another lot to park and walk from. There's plenty of cool shops to stop in as well on the way to and from the boat dock. If you like the ocean, boats and wildlife. I think you would like this cruise. We did!

We had a naturalist/animal guide who was knowledgeable and very attentive at identifying birds. There were a decent number of puffins, though they didn't really get close enough to make out the finer details by naked eye, but there are binoculars for rent (not sure how helpful they are because I had my own camera). We unfortunately didn't see any whales, but we were each given a standby ticket for a future cruise. The instructions in the email confirmation weren't completely accurate -- it instructed to go to a different pier where the cruise was actually going to be. Thankfully, I was able to reach staff over the phone and clarify this quickly. Definitely dress in layers, because once the boat starts powering out of the bay, the wind chills the temperature down a good 20 degrees. They did have blankets available but I'm not sure if they're an additional cost. The inside of the boat is nice and toasty, but the views aren't as crisp. I'd heard parking was rough, but if you go before June 1, I noticed some lots nearby were free, and there is free 4 hour parking a short 6 minute walk away that is just long enough for the cruise.

I learned so much about Maine's lobster industry including how lobsters are caught, which ones are kept for restaurants, and why certain lobsters are returned to the water. It was fascinating to learn about the process and get a behind-the-scenes look at such an important part of Maine's culture. One of my favorite parts was getting to choose my own lobster. It was only $12 to keep the lobster I caught, and then I took it over to Portland Lobster Co. (just about a one-minute walk away) where they cooked it for an additional $15. The meal came with corn on the cob and a baked potato, and I was able to enjoy it right on the waterfront with plenty of seating, additional menu options, and live music. The boat ride itself was about 1 hour and 45 minutes and included beautiful views of Portland's coastline, seals, and other famous landmarks. The crew was wonderful, friendly, knowledgeable, and they made sure everyone had a chance to participate. Even with 17 people onboard, no one was overlooked. They also took photos of everyone, which was a thoughtful touch. A few tips for future visitors: the boat has limited restroom availability, so I recommend using the restroom before boarding. Also, if you have time, definitely plan to enjoy your lobster afterward at Portland Lobster Co. it completes the experience. This was such a memorable way to experience Portland and a must-do for anyone visiting Maine.

We even confirmed the reservation just yesterday. We're staying at Spruce Point Inn and literally saw the boat leave this morning -- with a different group. We were told it was due to a new scheduling system, and that the other group's trip had been canceled the day before. But it's incredibly frustrating and hard to accept that our private charter, which had been booked far in advance, was the one that got bumped last minute. There was no meaningful apology. Just an offer to rebook us for tomorrow (when the weather looks terrible) or refund us. No real effort to make things right. This was supposed to be a highlight of our trip -- instead, it left us scrambling and disappointed on a very important and personal day. Totally unacceptable. This time two friends and I joined the sunset cruise, and we had only two other people with us on the boat. On the Rocks isn't fancy; it's a laid-back local vibe and a great alternative to a giant party boat. Before boarding you have a choice of beverages you can take along, both alcoholic and non; they put them in a cooler, and off you go! You can bring your own snacks on board if you want to. Tours are an hour and a half and that feels leisurely. The route might vary: last summer we cruised over toward Cape Elizabeth, but this time we wound our way through the islands scattered around the bay: Peaks, Cushing, Long Island, Cliff, and the Diamonds. I loved this route for the the glimpses at the back-island views--and then we sailed back toward the port with a gorgeous sunset lighting the way, lights twinkling on all around. Practicalities: it's a bit hard to find the launch point; there wasn't a sign for OTR and they've moved from where I'd caught it last time. Fortunately the first mate eventually wandered down the pier and found me looking around. If you're driving, give yourself plenty of time to park and walk--Old Port is crazy busy in the summer. Money: any drinks you buy and consume will be charged to the card of whoever made the reservations, so no need to fuss with Venmo on board (I recommend bringing some cash to tip afterward, though). And that's really all you'll need to navigate: once you're on board just relax, settle in, and enjoy being out on the Casco Bay!

To see the…read moresea The Lazy Jack is a 48 foot schooner that holds up to 14 people. Not exactly in comfort but you can find a comfy place on board to see everything that is going on. And a whole lot is usually going on this ship. The Lazy Jack was built in 1947 and is modeled after the great Gloucester fishing schooners of the last century. It was used for years to haul cargo from Massachusetts down to the Bahamas. Now the great ship is doing the work of hauling tourists around Boothbay Harbor. Under the skilled command of Caption Joe and his son Michael, the ship gives two hour tours around the harbor. Lots of great views of the islands, lighthouses and if you are lucky you might even see a seal, osprey or bald eagle. The two hour tour costs only 32 bucks for an adult and is an very cool experience. Capt Joe just doesn't prattle away the entire trip. He will point out various things of interest and answer all questions but he leaves enough quiet so the passengers can enjoy the sound of the ocean and wind. Unfortunately we didn't have a whole lot of wind so it wasn't as exciting as I hoped but it still was wonderful trip. Just so much to see and learn, the two hours went by so fast. You can bring you own booze and junk food on board and even take a turn at the wheel if you desire. These old schooners take a lot more sail management than the more modern sloops or catboats and just watching Michael and Joe constantly adjusting the sails was quite entertaining and educating. The tour runs from Memorial Day to the end of October and can also be chartered for all day excursions. A fantastic way to spend a couple of hours on the water and easily worth the 32 bucks. We returned all wind blown, a bit wet and a little sore but very, very happy.
