Two dogs and soda combo with red onions. (Onions a little spicy, so beware for kids) but I liked it.

On the way to ramapo to fish, this place is right off the exit ramp. Decided to grab my 'dinner'. The style of the hot dogs is New York style. Not fried. I eat different brands of dogs, and they use sabrett franks which in my opinion is a crisp outer coating. You want to eat supermarket dogs? Go buy ballparks. The place serves hot dogs as they were designed imho. Had a combo, two dogs with red onions (little tangy!) and was out the door for around five dollars. Been to other places like calla.. and their fries start at four dollars alone. Stop by, support local businesses. I will be back when I drive through..

Sabretts- solid & basic puppies. Easy off exit & back on. Keep it simple with mustard & raw onions. You'll be okay!

Fountain soda has the usual suspects, plus red birch beer which I had to get since you don't see it everywhere! Fries were hot and super crispy, with a nice soft fluffy interior. The hot dogs reminded me of other places in the area--think the Hot Grill in Clifton. Two make a good lunch. I'd definitely return to try more of the menu.

I feel transported to the 1950s coming here - there's even a drive thru! The Lantern keeps a…read moredelightfully vintage menu and aesthetics - serving up old-fashioned hotdogs, burgers, milkshakes, egg cream(!), fries, sandwiches, wraps, ice cream, breakfast foods and more - but not in any kind of intentional hipsterish way...which makes it authentically hip in my book. Their signature item is the hot Texas weiner. Now a Texas weiner ain't like any other chili dog. It's a fried hot dog, topped with a special spiced meat chili sauce (no beans), which you can and should get dressed "all the way," with chili, onions, and mustard. And btw it's not a Texas thing; it's a New Jersey thing...by way of Greece. The chili sauce on a Texas weiner is particular (and not to be confused with your standard-issue chili con carne), and the taste can be divisive. Some people love it; others like my husband didn't care for the chili or the flavor of the dog. It's one of those things, IYKYK I guess. I for one did enjoy my weiner. And my roast beef club and tater tots w/ cheese both hit the spot. It's simple and straightforward food, nothing fancy. I can get with the back-to-basics-ness of the joint which fits with the theme. This should be an irresistible destination for any road trippers and curiosity food seekers. There is ample seating inside, with two dining sections. And the people who work here are nice. The older lady who took our order was so sweet to put cartoons on the TV for my toddler. Probably 3-3.5 on the food, but bumping to 4 for the kitschy charm, good value, and kind service. I just luv the whole vibe!

Well.....we couldn't have been more disappointed. I regret not taking pics to post for you guys to see. I gave this place 2 stars because most of the food was edible and seemed fresh. Ok....we were given a buzzer and told our order would be ready shortly. When the buzzer rang I went to pickup our lunch and the outside of the boxes they put the dogs in were dripping with mustard and "chili" sauce. It just looked sloppy and careless. My second complaint is the size of the hot dog. The dogs are literally the same diameter as my pinky finger and there's more bread than hot dog so don't expect much in the way of meat. Third complaint is the toppings. I ordered a Texas something or other that was supposed to be chili, crushed Fritos and chopped raw onion. So, all (3) of the ingredients were there, BUT, there was no meat in the "chili"!! And it tasted and looked like a packet of taco seasoning mixed with mayonnaise, there were a total of maybe (4) crushed Fritos on the dog and the onions were at least fresh. My GF ordered a chili cheese dog and she was given the same liquid chili in a very small amount and a ton of cheese sauce to hide it. It's as if they ran out or ran low and scrambled to stretch out a tiny amount of chili to get through the day. Our dogs looked NOTHING like the pics everyone has posted over the years. They looked pitiful. As for the fries....our fries looked NOTHING like the pics posted throughout the years. There wasn't a crinkle cut fry in site. We were served, maybe, (11) or (12) of the thinnest shoestring fries I've ever seen. They looked like match stick potatoes. They had a look that made us think they were soft and slightly under cooked but they were hard as rocks and crunchy like pretzels. As if they were cooked well in advance and reheated and given to us. My other dog was a plain dog with K&M on a pretzel bun which wasn't terrible but again..the thinnest hot dog I've ever seen. It's a cute spot and has potential but I'll never go back. There are places like Chris's red hots in Verona that provide loaded dogs for about the same price and average dirty water dogs all over. Oh....forgot to add that they were completely out of the ingredients for the "Italian dog" at 1:30pm on a Monday.

There were signs on the door saying it was cash only - I was told their card system wasn't working today - good thing I had cash on me. I ordered the large #7 for my husband and the #4 for me & my sister to split. My husband also wanted to try the hot dogs so we got 2 - 1 topped with chili & the other with sweet & sour onions and black olive puree. The owner, Massimo, made our sandwiches - called us over & explained all the toppings they have. Massimo makes the toppings himself - he used to be an executive chef at a restaurant in Tenafly before starting this venture. He prepared our sandwiches with just the right toppings (that he chose himself) so it wasn't "just a sandwich, but an experience." He has a lovely personality & his approach made me want to come back & get lunch here again. Highly recommend the celery salad & red pepper mayo on your sandwich. This spot is a hidden gem!

This is the owner's fourth NJ restaurant that I personally know about. The other three were full…read moreservice Italian restaurants, two of which also featured homemade pizza. The first of them is STILL in business since 1971 and STILL family run. The second was his own pizza and food venture in Hackensack while the third was a bit more formal, this one in Tenafly, which I also reviewed. Anyway: the Italian influence is readily perceptible when you behold the sandwich and topping menu. Max chops all his own veggies and prepares his own spreads for the deli end of things...that's why everything tastes as fresh as it does. Pretty pedestrian but solid stuff if you like deli subs; QuickChek and Wawa have nothing on Max...I detect no assembly line stuff here. Then there are the hotdogs...deep fried Jersey dawgs are the feature of that end of this business. Personally I prefer all beef dogs on a griddle over deep fried pork and beef weenies. Think Rutt's Hut or Hot Grill here...but the common denominator here is the toppings...again: ALL homemade! Max does it himself because he's basically a perfectionist who's been in the business since he was a boy. His place is sparkling clean and although one can eat off the floor, Max has enough seating to keep you comfortable if you don't like to eat on the run. If you run into him, you'll readily see the old fashioned southern Italian hospitality (family from Reggio Calabria). He'll go out of his way to make you feel at home and answer any questions, as a few of his toppings are a bit off the beaten path. So go ahead and have an all American lunch with a nice Italian twist. One may care to remember that "prime" is the cognate of "primo" in Italian. It means "first" or "tops," and after one trip here, you'll see just what it really means. Buon appetito to all who try it, and "molt' auguri" to Max himself.
