I came here really excited for a haircut. I wanted a face frame and layers. I saw Audrey. She trimmed my hair ever so slightly, after saying she needs to cut at least an inch off. She didn't do any face framing, more like a trim... I then asked for a blow dry, and instead got a straitening. I'm not happy with the results, my hair is the same length as it was and without any face framing. Plus, they charge a "non-cash" fee. I was also told that I would get a hair consultation as a new client, but I didn't. I made an appointment for a color with her, though I'm reconsidering. I really am disappointed with the results. Such a great place to pamper yourself and relax. Everyone was very sweet! When I entered, I was offered tea or coffee while I waited in the comfiest chair ever. The atmosphere was calming and welcoming. As my stylist greeted me, she noticed I was wearing a mask and offered to wear one, which was extremely courteous and much appreciated. While waiting for my hair to process, I enjoyed peace and quiet while surrounded by beautiful Aveda products.My hair turned out beautifully, and Kate excitedly suggested changes for next time. Was looking for a new salon and stylist so thought I'd try Milan on the downtown mall. They promise to pamper you and care for you which sounded kinda nice. But when I arrived I realized they must think offering you a bottle of water is "pampering". No worries...I don't require pampering. But don't introduce new customers with false promises. I had a very nice stylist. She was kind and sweet. My cut was okay but the color was poorly done. I had chunks of highlights instead of strands. The MOST irritating thing about my experience was when I went to pay, I was slightly surprised by the $150 fee but then when I paid with my Debit card, she ran it and gave me the receipt to sign. My total was now $165 without tip. When I asked about this extra $15.00 she informed me they charge 10% when paying with a Debit or credit card. Shouldn't they mention this when you make an appointment? Most people pay with card now. Who carries a checkbook? Cash? What's that? What a crock! So my $150 service (not worth it) ended up being $180 including a 10% tip. I couldn't afford a bigger tip after being taken to the cleaners. Very disappointed with my experience. What I thought was going to be a splurge ended up being service no better than the salons I've been to and overinflated fees. Save your money! read more

I love this place! I recently moved to Kalamazoo from Chicago for work. While I lived in Chicago I went to a small independently owned boutique salon so I was on the hunt to find a similar salon here in Kzoo. I had a few requirements to narrow down my choices: the salon must sell/use Aveda products and it had to be in a convenient location. Check! and Check! I took some time to check out Milan's website. (I base a lot of my choices in shopping for new places etc on the look and ease of use of a company's website) Their website is straight forward and easy to navigate. I was glad to find a small bio for each of their stylists. That's when I found Jennifer. :) Her bio mentioned the fact that Jen is well versed in "dealing with curly hair" BINGO! You're hired! I have a mop of curly hair that can be a little unruly at times unless its maintained by a professional. Jen fits the bill, plus she is a fantastic person. She is very friendly and easy to talk to...I hate those places where you sit in silence and don't talk. (Some of my best therapists have been my hair stylists. ha!) The more I visit the salon the more I am convinced I made the RIGHT choice in selecting Milan. The owners Jason and Shannon are very friendly and you can tell that they take care of their employees. Some other points to note: The prices are reasonable. They have a full line of Aveda products available for purchase. The atmosphere and decor is calming and very well done - clean and neat. I recently moved to the area from Columbus and after finally having some cash flow I decided it was time for a proper haircut! I've been going to Aveda concept salons for awhile and my old stylist give me a head's up to this place, so, naturally this was the first place I looked to book an appointment. Can I just say this place made me feel like a VIP! Jason greeted me and checked me in. He was very friendly and nice. The salon is laid out nicely, too. Jen cut my hair and did a fantastic job. I brought in a picture (because me and haircut lingo/descriptions don't work) and she listened to what I was trying to achieve and asked questions to really figure out what I was going for. She even fit me in for an eyebrow waxing and I couldn't be happier! (She even touched up my make-up before I left!) I felt like I was the only person in the salon in the best of ways! It's a small salon (I think like 4 people work there? From their website it seems!) but the lay out is nice and the intimacy is nice, too! You're not talking over other people and you feel like you're the only one there. read more

If you read any of my reviews of hair salon reviews, you'll see a common theme - I HATE being gauged for a simple haircut. On a recent visit to Kalamazoo for a friends' wedding and to visit family, I thought ahead and figured I'd save a couple of bucks by getting my hair cut in a salon in the Midwest vs shelling out for one in the DC area. I chose Milan just based on the location and Yelp reviews. Chip cut my hair - very friendly guy, great shampoo/conditioning technique (although maybe a bit too vigorous, as my hair did get a tad too tangled - but that is what detangling spray is for, right?) and good cut. He'd previously worked at the same salon in Cincinnati, OH for 13 years, so he clearly has a lot of experience and does not salon hop. The experience cost a bit more than I'd like to pay in Kazoo ($50), but still less than I'd pay in any comparable place in the DMV. I will point out, however, that this is the only salon from which I have ever received a thank you card - from the stylist himself. Nice touch! read more

Kalamazoo has a number of great salons. I went to a few others before finding Milan. My hair was dry and damaged from heat and color. With their expertise and Aveda products my hair improved. I was able to grow it out and it's now back to healthy and shiny. Jason Milan is always accommodating and communicative about scheduling. He makes you feel welcome the moment you walk in, with hot tea or beverages and great conversation. If they don't have the Aveda product you are looking for he orders it and has it bagged and ready for your next visit. Noelle is my stylist. It's always a pleasure to see her. It is a true salon experience, with hand massage and deep conditioning treatments. I feel like a new person when I leave. I'm so glad to have them downtown! read more

I enjoyed Kristen's haircuts but sadly I cannot support this business because they charged me a large fee for the privilege of giving them money. Jason Milan explained that he negotiated unfavorable terms with his credit card processor and that customers are responsible for his cost of doing business. He pointed out that a 2 inch sign on the receptionist desk allows him to impose this fee. This is the only business I've come across that values customers this little. read more

When I got there they were behind schedule so my appointment started 20 minutes or so late (which is fine, I understand it happens and I'm pretty patient so that was no big deal) I wasn't going to leave a review at first because I did enjoy my hair cut and I kinda liked the color but it kept eating away at me so I finally decided to leave my review. I forget the name of the lady that did my hair though. But anyway, I felt as though my appointment was very rushed since they were running behind. I've had my hair bleached, colored, etc by other sailings multiple times through out my life and I know how the process works, and how my hair reacts to getting lightend etc. Most of the time, they never have any issues with being able to get my hair lightend and colored a fun color in the same day. Anyway, the stylist talked my out of lightening my entire head and going emerald green and decided on just going a partial bit in the back of my hair. Fine whatever. It's not what I was wanting but I wasn't going to argue over it. When I realized the amount of time she left the lighter in my hair and the color in my hair I knew I was being rushed because it hardly took any time at all. Typically When I've been to other salons I'm sitting there for quite some time when getting it colored but here I hadn't sat long at all. My hair that was colored turned out more of a lighter neon greenish color instead of the dark emerald green (which I thought would be easier to do since it's darker but I'm sure that would mean leaving the dye on longer as well) it was still cute. I absolutely adored my haircut but the next day my color started fading immediately. I know you have to use cold water and a color protectant shampoo so that wasn't the issue. I also feel like I was overcharged for a full color when what I got was only a very small bit of hair colored. Look I'm not an expert and I'm not the kind of person to complain usually but just thinking about the rushed appointment and how everything started fading right away leaves a bad taste. Anyway that's all. Based on the other reviews I assume this isn't normal for this place and I just happened to be the unlucky one. I also didn't care for the comment that said my hair was more "tasteful" for only having the small part colored. No offense but people can still look classy and tasteful with fun colorful hair. Also didn't have time for my eyebrow wax either so they had another girl (who was probably on a break or not even on the clock yet) come in and do my eyebrows. I'm just sad about how I went in expecting one thing and came out with something disappointing. I was trying to avoid doing the bleach job myself but now I'll have to wait til I have more money saved up to go to another salon and get the look I was wanting. I leave two stars because I still liked my cut and I'm sure all the stylists here aren't like that and I doubt that being behind is typical. I won't be returning here. It's not a warning to anyone I just want the salon to know what they may make their clients feel like. I felt rushed and ripped off. read more

A bit on the pricey side but what you would expect for the quality and comparable to places I've been in chicago. Now I just have to find a place in Grand Rapids that I like. read more

I visited Milan today after receiving excellent reviews from a friend and online (always do your research first!) They were all spot-on. The salon itself is gorgeously decorated, yet laid-back. The staff is so cheerful and attentive; they even bring you coffee or tea while you're getting your hair done! Chip worked on my hair, and he is a super-nice and chill guy. The color on my hair is the best I've ever had, and it was finished in two hours, which, due to the length of my hair, is one of the quickest dye jobs I've ever had. Overall, the entire experience was top-notch and I'm definitely going back! It was a liiiiiitle pricey; on their site, it mentioned that color was 55$, but it ended up being 85$ (also, I assume, because my hair is so damn long), but it was totally worth it. Be sure to stop by Milan next time you want a dye or haircut. : ) read more

I wish I had gone to this salon much earlier instead of going through a bunch of trial-and-errors at the salon next to them (cough cough). My favorite part is the easy scheduling through Yelp. Jason was so quick to respond and answered my questions prior booking. The salon itself was very clean and felt very spa-like. There's not a lot of chairs, so it does feel more spacious and quiet. I was offered tea, coffee, or water when I came in. My hair stylist Amy was really great as well. I felt she really listened to what I wanted and was also great with suggestions and recommendations (I've had stylists just take a literal interpretation of what I was leaning towards, rather than making a professional recommendation or judgement). I loved the color she chose for me as well as the styling (which I had initially declined, but she insisted, and I'm so glad I let her!). Amy also made recommendations for products for my hair, without being overly pushy or pressuring me. Can't wait to come back! read more

Horrible!!! My son and I went here because of the reviews and it was an Aveda Salon. My services included highlights, haircut, wax and my son received a haircut. My highlights were an inch away from my scalp, my hair was an inch longer on one side and my sons haircut was lopsided. I called the salon the next day to have it fixed but was nervous on having additional chemicals added especially from someone who didnt get it right the first time. After calling the salon and canceling my appointment, I was asked why I would come there when someone in my family does hair anyways. I was so disappointed in how I was treated. After spending over 200.00 on services, I had to pay someone else to fix it. So sad:( read more

Needed to fix a bad dye job for interviews, so I made an appointment here. From the moment I walked in, I was offered a hot beverage and my stylist was alerted. I was set up with Aimee, who was ready to start within 5 minutes of me arriving. Let me tell you, she was amazing! She listened to what I wanted and what I didn't want, but at the same time I gave her free range to do what she thought would look good on me. I can be impulsive when it comes to my hair. When I want to change it, I want to do it right then. So when I got to work in downtown Kalamazoo on a Tuesday morning and decided to get a hair cut THAT day, I emailed Milan. Luckily they had a noon spot and I'm so glad I grabbed it. I had such a nice experience. I was greeted very warmly by Jason Milan, offered and given a steaming cup of tea, and waited a very short time in a lovely, clean, chic waiting area. Kate came and introduced herself and consulted with me before beginning. I explained that I have thinning hair as a result of alopecia and that I wanted to cut at least 6 inches off my hair for a change. She expertly recommended a length that would make my fine, thin hair look fuller and thicker. Then after I had a relaxing shampoo and scalp massage, Kate gave me the cutest bob. I love my new cut! She even recommended changing where my bangs start to give the illusion of fuller bangs, and it worked! I have so much more confidence now because no one can tell that I'm losing my hair thanks to Kate's terrific cut. I would highly recommend this salon; I can't see how anyone could be disappointed. read more

When I moved to Kzoo back in 2006, I tried a few different salons. I went to an Aveda salon in Portage, which was okay, but if I'm going to spend over $100 on my hair (I get a cut and highlights), I want the full salon experience, not feeling like I'm sitting in someone's house! So I eventually left there and tried Milan in 2009, and they matched me up with Jen. Needless to say, I've never left. My color is beautiful and tasteful, my cut is perfect, and Jennifer has the best chairside manner of any stylist I've ever gone to. I feel like I'm not only getting a great value for my hair, I'm also getting fabulous conversation time with her! I've since moved to TN, and so far, no one here matches Milan. So guess what? When I come to town a couple of times a year, I still call them up and get my hair done. I can't say enough good things about this place. read more

I recently relocated to the Kalamazoo area, & was in need of a stylist in the area. I am always nervous when it comes to trying having someone new work on my hair because it is quite finicky. After reading the positive reviews for Milan, on Yelp, I decided to give them a shot. The feeling I got when I first walked in, was a fresh & relaxed vibe. Like they weren't going to rush your appointment. I ended up being booked with Kate, & after telling her the general idea of what I wanted, she went to work creating the image I was looking for. She is very artistic & gifted at what she does. I've never felt more beautiful after a cut and color in my life, & she didn't even color my whole head, she just put in some natural highlights. I hugged her a couple times after I saw her masterpiece. I am beyond satisfied with the job she did! I booked a follow up appointment for a trim, before I left the salon! Thanks, Kate!! This is the fourth salon I've been to in Kalamazoo, and by far the most expensive. I was impressed with their customer service and friendliness, and my stylist was very well informed with current men's styles. However one men's hair cut was $40 plus tip. Tromblay's solon just a few blocks away charges only $30, with no tipping allowed, and their style was equally as modern. read more

Horrible!! I hate my hair cut, absolutely hate it. - Overpriced ( charging x amount for service and adding hours on top of it... no wonder my hairstylist took her time with my highlight touch up and cut...) I have been a patron of Milan 2 times and both times my hair cut/color has been awful!! Once in college, the stylist cut my hair way too short and it took months to grow out/become manageable which leads me to my most recent visit... Once again I try Milan after all the great ratings only to feel ripped off, and stuck with a terrible hair cut. I should have known when the stylist cut my dry -before applying the color (red flag!!). I asked for 3 inches off my bottom, follow the long layers currently in place and a face frame. Somehow this lead to more than 3 inches being cut off, and random chunks of hair cut to chin length "to give definition" and "texture". Literally looks like a 7 year old went to town on a barbie doll's hair. Another red flag was looking at the floor and seeing long pieces of my hair laying there. My hair which was once low maintenance is now a hassle where it needs to either be styled every morning or put in a pony tail. I can't wrap my hair in a top know without small chunks of hair (random layers) poking out. I have a wedding in 7 months and am going to be amazed if a stylist will be able to do anything with my hair and the edward scissor hands layers. Color was what I was looking for, so I'm fine with that. My advice for Milan stylists: before cutting a client's hair, learn more about their lifestyle and how they style their hair daily/weekends. Do not assume a high maintenance stylized cut is what they are looking for. read more
