This Italian grocery store is so like the grocery stores we shopped in when living in Italy we got super excited. OMG all the groceries! I have no idea what the rule is about bringing packaged foods back to the U.S., but I wanted to buy so much stuff I used to keep in my Italian pantry! Next visit to Montreal we plan to stay in the Little Italy area and shop here on day one. Even if we have to eat it all before we leave town. We literally stumbled upon this grocery store. Established in 1954, two brothers introduced Montreal to Italian products. Today their children have taken over and it seems to be a very popular neighborhood market based on the number of customers shopping during our visit. Bakery, deli, meat counter, dairy, produce. All the sections you expect in a traditional grocery store. The breakfast sweets. The Chocolate. Whole rabbit in the meat counter. So much pasta! Oil, balsamic, sauce. I just need to go back. Wonderful Italian grocery store about a 10 min walk from Marchè Jean Talon. Milano's is a very large, well stocked; very diverse store selling, fresh, frozen products, canned goods, produce, coffee, meats, seafood, deli items and prepared foods. The variety of brand names of imported Italian tomatoes, pasta and cheeses is staggering. Needless to say Milano's will always be on my list of stops when I'm in Montréal. read more

What an Italian Gem in Montreal! This store has 3 main rooms with everything Italian so far as fruit, vegetables, pastries, super deli-with already made sandwiches or you can order (but they are NOT fast, be forewarned), pasta, spices, canned goods, crackers, candies, olive oils, vinegars, espresso machines, dishes... to name just what I can remember! We spent at least an hour going thru it! My friend was so excited to find some cookies she had in Italy she hadn't been able to find in Florida-matter of fact she went back for more before we left the street! We tried to order a mortadella sandwich and mixed salamis sandwich but the deli was so busy (and slow) we left. Went had lunch, came back and was able to get them! Hurray! read more

As much as I love this in theory, this place is just too chaotic and disjointed for me. This place has grown and renovated over the years but still very difficult to grab what you need and go. Some negatives are lack of prices on expensive items like olive oil, pannetones that are all over the place and lack of help. It's built in width so that explains a lot, so the sides such as fruits and veggies section are not as busy. Milano is a slice of heaven on earth! I found so many wonderful items I couldn't possibly list them all! On my last visit I purchased freshly housemade, Milano Tomato & Basil Sauce, and some Milano Cheese & Spinach Cannoli. I put the Cannoli in a pan topped with the sauce put it in the oven and and 30 minutes later I had the most delightful meal! So Delicious! OMG, what a shockingly amazing grocery store, specializing in gourmet Italian fare. My Italian foodie relatives were showing me around Little Italy and they noted that they often shop in this store, as it "has everything". We went in to browse and I was amazed at the huge selection of gourmet pastas and oils and humongous wheels and wheels of cheeses and sauces and all foods Italian. Stuff I'd never seen before, too: handmade rainbow noodles, cheeses in huge and odd shapes (along with the biggest electric cheese grater I've ever seen in my life!), Italian pastries and chocolates I've never heard of...... Of course, we all ended up buying some things; now can you not?! Note: I'd have categorized this store as semi-pricey ($$$), as items are imported or homemade and focus on the gourmet. The Italian grocery store recently expanded, almost doubling in size. It's located in be heart of little Italy, and honestly one of my favourite weekend spots to visit. What an awesome grocery store! I came here after I tried out the Blood Orange Mimosa at Sparrow and eyed them making it with Blood Orange juice from a brand called "Santal" by Parmalat (yeah, the same milk people). Turns out Parmalat has international brands not readily available here but after doing a search ( yeah, I'm that kind of a geek and when I get fixated on something, I'm pretty dogged in finding out as much as I can) someone on Chowhound mentioned you can get Blood Orange juice here. So I came and found it, and so much more. This has to be one of the better grocers in the city. Probably the best grocer for Italian foods and brands (including Italian laundry detergent!). Aisles of tomato paste, pasta sauces, pasta (fresh, store made or manufactured), a crazy cheese counter, a bakery counter and an excellent butcher, displays of panettone, and of course fresh fruits and veggies. Oh wow! I did not check Yelp for this market when I went wandering through Little Italy, but it looked interesting so I thought I'd pop in and see what it's all about. This cute little Italian fruit shop is actually HUGE! I mean, I believe it spanned almost the entire block. I fell in love with the olive oil and vinegar section. There is an amazing selection! Fresh house made pasta.... fresh produce, a pastry section. Of course, I was staring at the cannolis longer than I should have. A good variety of imported products you won't likely find at traditional grocery stores, including Italian Nutella. Nothing there is cheap though, there's no particular reason why you should get your prime rib steak there as opposed to a proper butcher shop. I accidentally discovered Milano when I was 5 minutes late getting to Anatol which is just up the road. I was on the phone with my best friend and I had a five minute attack of amazement describing everything. This place is huge - it's like a block long and crammed with stuff. Their selection is amazing. I think they sell over a hundred (easily) varieties of balsamic vinegar alone. Multiple varieties of buffalo mozzarella, fresh pasta, dried fruit. If it's Italian, they have it. If you're a one-stop shopper, which I am not, they also have a good selection of produce, but nothing organic (unsurprising for Montreal). Go! Their selection is pretty good. They have a good variety of Italian products such as canned tomatoes, pastas, drinks like San Pellegrino, etc, etc. They also sell Nutella imported from Italy which if you have ever tasted you'll know that it's much better then what is made here. Pricewise they aren't the best and if you know where to go you can get the same goods for less. I must say their butcher shop is really good. Their sausages are very flavourful and go well on the grill. I particularly like the spicy ones as they have a nice kick to them. The cheese counter also has an excellent selection. read more

Being of Italian descent, it's probably not surprising that I LOVE Italian cheese; in particular, Mozzarella di Bufala and Burrata. Milano is the only place that I've found thus far, that carry Burrata, and I couldn't help but do a happy dance at this serendipitous discovery. Not to worry though - if Italian cheese isn't your thing, they have a ton of other varieties to choose from. Service: The place is a bit of a zoo. Just remember that if you're looking to get anything in bulk (olives, cold cuts, some cheeses), you need to take a number at the counter - but the queue moves pretty quickly. There aren't too many clerks on the floor, but while I was checking out the pastas, I started talking to this awesome fellow, who, when he found out that I was going to Italy in June, started speaking to me in Italian to help me 'practice.' He also offered a few pieces of very sound advice that consisted of things not to do while in Italy. He was a most awesome clerk. Price: I would say prices are average. Major highlights: pasta brands and shapes you would not find in the regular supermarket; overwhelmingly abundant shelves of vinegars and olive or other oils; the dream land of panettone, which indeed should be available in a store called Milano (panettone has Milanese origins); Italian cheeses you haven't heard about, they will grate your piece for you if required; home made pasta, gnocchi and the best pizza dough in town; coffee brands as Kimbo; the endless choices of cantocinni; home made pesto; San Marzano canned tomatoes of DOP quality at reasonable prices; actually everything is more reasonably priced at Milano. I asked my fiancé to take me to Milano's after reading the one English review. He is of Italian descent, a native of Montréal and is a superb cook; I am a foodie and also an accomplished cook. We were both delighted by what we saw at this Italian grocery! The prices are very good, particularly for Montréal and the selection is amazingly good. With Marché Jean Talon just around the corner, it makes a terrific shopping excursion for a Saturday morning.
