Yes, this men's room was in extremely poor condition. Paper and water on the floor, one stall out of toilet paper and human waste in another. Thankfully, I am self-contained in the van so I have the option of skipping over this. Others do not. So why two stars and not one? Because other than the condition of the rest room, the parking area is good. Level, far enough from the highway to skip the worst of the noise and no signs limiting the time I could stay. The rest area is quite small and there isn't another one for close to an hour to the south. I suggest that if you need a break, go just a little further and hit up the Love's Truck Stop. There's plenty of parking, with separate areas designated for passenger vehicles and for trucks and RVs. The facility has two separate restroom buildings serving both men and women. The men's restroom includes two urinals and two stalls. Considering the age of the facility and the amount of traffic it sees, the restrooms are generally kept in decent condition. There are also a few water fountains located between the restroom buildings. One of the nicer features is the amount of open space available. There are several large grassy and dirt areas where you can stretch your legs, walk around, or give your pets a chance to get some exercise and take care of business. If you're looking for a clean, convenient place to use the restroom, take a break from driving, and recharge before getting back on the road, this rest stop gets the job done.

Maverick is just across the way with the same prices. Restrooms are super clean (at least the girl's side), and you can get any kinda road food you might imagine inside. We stopped for lunch at the Wendy's, mostly just cause I had a 2 for 1 coupon on some burgers. Lots of commercial truck traffic here so watch out where you're going.

The grounds are beautiful--pine trees, picnic tables, and small walking trails--and it was surprisingly quiet and peaceful. I stopped at both the eastbound and westbound rest areas. The eastbound side is a bit nicer overall, with more space and a calmer feel. Both restrooms were clean, though my westbound stop was later in the day and it showed--some stalls were out of toilet paper. Still, for a public restroom along the freeway, this was very much appreciated and a genuinely pleasant place to take a break.

A rest stop with red woods…read more Serving only northbound traffic on the 101, the Irvine Lodge Rest Area was named after an early auto camp and lodge owned by the Irvine's. It became a rest area in the 50's and contains a forested picnic and dog area with some old growth redwoods (hundreds of years old). It is located far enough back from the highway to have large trees in between block out the cars zipping by (though one can still hear the noise).
