A. and Josephine Poe. Mr. Poe owned Poe Brick Company. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is currently getting some much needed maintenance and painting done so make sure to check in advance if it will be open the day you want to visit. The guided tour takes about an hour. The house is a Victorian Style and built from a kit. The wrap around porch and the intricate detailing outside is impressive. The inside of the house is in great condition and has tall ceilings; wide doors and the woodwork is very impressive. It gives a glimpse into early 20th century life. The house has two staircases one for the family and another for the servants. The servants were provided living quarters. The kitchen is detached from the house as the oven was on all day. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful house.

The museum is on two levels and an elevator is available. The museum has exhibits on the American Indian, settlement to the area; the Civil War and textiles; slavery; transportation by steamboat and plank roads. The exhibits are very detailed. Arsenal Park is behind the museum and is four and a half acres. The park is where the Confederate had an arsenal that was destroyed by General Sherman in 1865. The Poe House is next door so make sure to check out all three when visiting the complex.

I've been to Cape Fear Studios several times in the last few weeks for my daughters' art classes…read more I've been consistently impressed by the gallery, which contains everything from pottery to paintings to jewelry. The art is not only beautiful, but reasonably priced -- and geared towards local artists. As for the art classes, I have been deeply impressed with my daughters' instruction. Both of my girls have always exhibited artistic talent and it is difficult to find age appropriate classes where they can be challenged. This class has been different - they did cover some things they already knew, but they quickly moved into areas neither were familiar with. I'm thrilled with how much they have improved in just a few short weeks. I would definitely suggest Cape Fear Studios to those looking to purchase local art or anyone looking for challenging art classes for children.
