Yes, I've been to Amsterdam and this looks just like them. That's because the Zwaanendael Museum was designed to honor the city hall in Hoorn, Netherlands. The museum exhibits the history and settlement of the southern coast of Delaware. I thought the train lines were very interesting as well as the Delftware on display. Perhaps you missed that Lewes was bombarded by the British during the War of 1812 (there's a house with a cannonball not far away). The museum is free but definitely accepts donations. As I was going from Rehoboth Beach to New Castle I was wanting to take RT 9 north off the beaten path. As I was coming to the RT1/9 split I had traffic in front and behind and they seem to be in a hurry, Neil wasn't. So I pulled off the road at this place to let everyone by. As I came in thru the entrance the sign read "Free Museum" I says to myself "FREE" I need to check it out and glad I did... As I walked inside you have a really nice gift shop that you need to explore and support. The volunteers working were the best. Not sure where to start but as you enter the main area it is just loaded with WWII, Korean and Vietnam displays. Ever wonder how those belly and tail gunners worked, there is a display for that. I know I could not have done it. There is even a mock-up control tower to explore and listen to the base tower giving commands. On my visit I was able to see a C130 take off from the tower. If your ever in the area this is a must stop, especially if your a history buff. And at the end, please give these people a donation for a job well done. Peace.

The F101 and F106's were great to see, and will admit sensory overload. So many great planes, and also the former air traffic control tower were top notch. You'll want to go here. I learned that the Swedes taught Americans how to build log cabins in the 1600's. I learned that rural delaware didn't get electricity until the 1940's. I learned that German POW's in WWII worked on Perdue chicken farms. I even learned that Model T's got modded into Tractors by early 1900's engine hackers. Americans can't remember a time before electricity and it's sad. This museum will show you. It wasn't that long ago! Amazing museum and will return with my kids, my grandkids, and my great grandkids, and maybe even my great-great grandkids if life extension technology gets that far. If the electrical grid collapses and we revert to pre-industrial civilization, I would STILL go back to the museum so I can learn how to plow a field with nothing but a horse. Some of the farm equipment was interesting, such the apple polisher, and old lawn mower. They had a couple of old fashioned washing machines, too. Inside the museum, there was the oldest log cabin in Delaware, and I could go inside of it. Outside, they had a couple of different buildings that were transferred there from other Delaware locations. To name a few- church, farmhouse, chicken coop, general store, school, and blacksmith shop. I could go into all of them except the church because the museum was fixing it up. These were actual old buildings, and it was very, very interesting to go through them. I like the old general store and the school. If you are visiting Dover for the day, go to the Air Force Museum, have lunch someplace, and go to this museum in the afternoon!

Our kids had a great time and learned a lot about the history of the DSP while having some fun and getting their faces painted. Makes you appreciate the sacrifices that the men and women of the state police make to protect the citizens. I would definitely recommend visiting with the family. We will absolutely be back again!

We were greeted by a really nice retired police officer that gave us the history of the museum. The music is free to visit, but they do take donations to help cover operating costs. There are several cars and even some motorcycles. You are allowed to enter and play in the Crown Victoria. My son had a blast turning on the sirens and taking his daddy for a "ride". There was even a trooper hat he got to wear while he was "driving". There are lots of history pieces including the old kits they used for taking fingerprints. It's a pretty decent size and in good shape. Definitely worth a visit either with or without the kids.

I wish we'd had enough time and energy for a full day visit, so we could properly convey all that…read morethe Arboretum has to offer, but we were limited to a half day following the "Flight to Freedom" walk while we followed both Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass' historical paths, a joint program of the arboretum and local historians to try to sort of simulate the outdoor challenges of escaping enslaved persons. As such, and in early spring, our appreciation was limited to one trail and the amenities around the visitor center, but our appreciation and admiration for the Adkins for even this bare introduction to the extensive grounds is nevertheless deep just from the one visit and left us eager to return on another day to explore the rest of the trails. The front desk person was lovely and kind, and oriented us after we explained why we were there. (The admission price here is tiny; I recommend donating a little extra on top of it. It's a great bargain either way.) They have these old-school mini-walkmen-style audio guides that were helpful but which badly need to be updated to the 3rd decade of the 21st century. They're hard to navigate and harder to hear. Having a borrowed audio guide feels like something from the 1950s; why not just make it available on cell phone, with the text available online or via an app? That was the one clumsy part of the Flight to Freedom path-- only one person at a time could listen to the very low volume on the headphones. While we speculate perhaps they thought this approach would preserve the quiet for other visitors, perhaps a simple imprecation to keep volume low on cell phones would suffice...? I can't think of a good reason not to make the jump to current museum practice. (That plus it's not very disability-friendly if you're hearing impaired or have fine motor problems.) When we could hear it, the audio guide was excellent, including the "bonus" tracks of first person escapee narratives. The content only needs a better delivery mechanism. The arboretum itself was quite alive -- we saw a heron in the woods, ID'd about 20 different species of birds in total either by sight or with Merlin, ran across a blooming hawthorne that was simply riotous with honeybees merrily sucking nectar out, and enjoyed the early blooms. It was a fun time, where one can see through the underbrush but also see the buds and early leaves and many blossoms out. There were also some programs for young children going on, and it's very gratifying to see the place alive with visitors. The little gift shop is fun, and while there's no café (one can understand why) it would be very tempting to bring a picnic, which I suspect (but do not know) is frowned upon. The inviting water feature out front with the signature chairs was a nice place to stop and rest, while we listened to the frogs croaking and somehow avoided early season insect pests.

In early December 1787, the thirty delegates (ten from each of Delaware's three counties) to the Delaware ratifying convention were called upon to make a momentous decision. For five days, they considered whether to approve the new, stronger central government proposed at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia the previous summer. Finally, on the 7th, the delegates unanimously voted to ratify the United States Constitution, making Delaware the first state to do so. Delegates gathered at The Golden Fleece Tavern, the same place where the state assembly sometimes met.
