Military Reserve is a great area for hiking and biking. I actually call it Mountain Cove Area. It's kinda my go to area for when it's muddy. It's pretty easy to go to, and get a little work out after work, If I'm in a hurry. What I like most is the military cemetery. Also the views of the downtown cityscape. The Boise Foothills are such a treasure and we are so lucky to have so many hiking trails with trailheads within city limits! This is one of my favorite trails. You'll start by parking in either the large parking lot by the BMX track or the smaller parking lot that overlooks the dog park and new Boise Bike Park. You can't miss the trailhead...it is all gravel and clearly marked. Pretty soon it will branch out and you'll have choices. You can take a steep incline (highly recommended, because you will be quickly rewarded with beautiful views) or a lower, more meandering path. If you go up, there is a picnic area at the top of the bluff. Keep going and you'll go up and down (though really the inclines are not steep). You're still in the city so you will pass by some East End homes (and boy are they lookers). Eventually you will come down into a ravine and this is a prime spot to view wildlife. I have seen two foxes, countless bunnies and a wide assortment of birds at all times of the year. Depending on the path you take, you'll eventually enter a more "wooded" (think of this term very loosely) area with a brook, brambles and brush. In the summertime, it feels like the fairies inhabit this wild place. I can't get enough of it. Eventually the trail will take you out where you came in and you can drive off in your car, high on Vitamin D and nature. This is generally a good trail at any time of the year, because most of it is gravel. Though if it is too muddy...please turn back and help preserve our foothills! read more

This area is BEAUTIFUL! We came with the intent of walking and hiking some of the trails, and were pleased to see that there were so many options! You'll need to watch out for people on bikes on some of the trails, but there is always room to step aside and let them through. We came in the middle of the day and walked parts of the shady paths, but would definitely be interested in coming back in the evening or earlier morning to do some of the less shaded paths. Be sure to read up on the intensity, lengths, and incline of the paths before you go, because it can be confusing once you get there. There are well marked signs to signify the directions on the path you are on, but it's easy to get back if you get lost. What a beautiful area! The bathrooms just down the road outside the bike park are really well kept. read more

I'm shocked that I've lived here for almost seven years and just now tried out this trail for the first time. I came here for a run with a friend and really enjoyed it. The trails are well-kept and the views are beautiful. We went on a Saturday morning and it had the perfect amount of people on it - meaning - it wasn't so empty that it felt eerie, and it wasn't so crowded that it felt overwhelming. Trails: There are several trail options that can cater to whatever level of exercise you feel comfortable with. There are a lot of leveled out trails as well as some with steep inclines - both are fantastic for training for an upcoming race, or just getting outside to get some fresh air. Parking: Turn left on Mountain Cove, and on your right you'll find a lower parking lot. Drive a quarter mile past the first lot and you'll find another small lot on the right side of the road (I recommend parking here), there's a trailhead that starts basically in this little lot! read more

Really enjoyed this trail!! Our first hike in Boise we landed here and had a great hike. We did the Cottonwood Creek Trail, intermediate and approx 3mi. The terrain is a lot of up and downs with bits of shade and a great intermediate workout! Views are also fantastic! I love outdoor spaces and this one is no exception! It is right outside of downtown boise. Plenty of trail heads, and trail head parking. During early spring, they bring in the goats to mow by the cemetery - that is so amazing. Other than that the trails give you multiple options, plenty of things to see and lots of exercise to be had! Watch out for the snakes, enjoy the scenery, the greenery before it gets too hot, the flowers before it gets too hot, and watchout for the bikes! But go! read more

This time of the year is just perfect to do hiking, where spring is in the air, not too warm! This is one of our fave spot to hike with aside from Table Rock! Great trails & pretty hills! Great hiking, biking, running spot. Lots of well maintained paths. Beautiful views and spots with shade which is great when you're hiking in the heat. Only complaint is that people don't follow the dogs on leash rule and I came across at least 6 dogs off leash and away from their owners. Just follow the rules or they will make it a no dog spot!!!! read more

Beautiful hike in Boise, located conveniently right outside of the downtown area with stunning views of the city. There are multiple trails varying in levels of difficulty, from nearly flat, to slightly challenging hills (what we did today) to let's go straight up to the top, hard. There is also a basin with a dog park and some picnic tables, and the trails are also off leash, so its a great spot to bring your pooch. I only wish the signs indicating the trails forking off of the main path had approximate loop distances so you could plan your hike accordingly. read more

The military reserve is a beautiful place to hike and bike. It provides amazing scenery and a array of wonderful trails.

How lucky the residents of Boise are to have these foothills at their fingertips. This trail has miles of open space. You can head out for a quick loop or walk for hours. One comment that I saw in other reviews is the trails are not marked with mile markers so it's difficult to plan your route. Make sure you have plenty of water with you. The trail is moderately easy. Mostly flat with a few hills. If you are highly active makes for a challenging run. Everyone I ran into on the course was friendly and it felt safe. I will definitely be back. read more
