Great store with a wonderful selection of Clothing and all kinds of hidden treasures, many locally handmade. The knowledgeable staff are friendly and helpful without being overbearing. Take your time while shopping so you don't miss laugh out loud moments as you look at the many cards, stickers, magnets and patches. A store worthy of the time to enjoy. When this spot was on Dalhousie and my cousin lived around the corner we used to go every time I visited, it had lovely fun things and friendly low key staff and we didn't feel rushed trying different things on and chatting. I've only been to the new location near Byward market once, but I found the same nice vibes and quirky finds. In Covid times, I enjoy browsing their website. Not everything is for me but the Schitt's Creek candles are amaaazing and there's all kinds of other super sweet gift ideas there, like the Mariah Carey holiday ornament. They have a lot of lovely pieces from Canadian artisans - I wish their website and social had more info on the makers, but that's mostly an aside. read more

Hands down, this is my favourite clothing store in Ottawa. Having lived practically next door to it for 2 years, it was usually my first stop when I needed a new outfit, found myself with a little bit of birthday money or even if I was bored on a Sunday afternoon. I know that I will always find fashionable items that are not only unique, but correspond with the current and seasonal trends. While I adore this store, I can see that it is not for everyone. Some of the fashion pieces, along with the accessories are a little bit quirky and funky, usually an embodiment of what I can only describe as the "hipster" style. I have found many summer dresses, blouses, scarves and earrings at this store though, and miss looking into the window and viewing their every changing, always creative window displays as I walk to work. While it can be a little bit pricey, I am willing to pay the price in order to have a unique item. They also often have really great sales a few times a year, and once an item is no longer "in season" (such as jackets after winter and skirts after summer) they usually end up on the %40 off rack. Milk also often participates in the Dalhousie shopping nights, so keep your eyes pealed for these events which feature extended hours and great deals. The woman that owns the store is great, and I get a kick out of chatting with her each and every time I go in. It is usually not too busy, and I have never had to wait for a change room. I would also recommend this place to anyone looking to buy a birthday present, or perhaps a stocking stuffer. I have tried to shop here three times in effort to support small business. 2 times there were not open and opened the door to tell me they "could let me shop but I shouldn't ever trust google times". Then why post them on google? Very easy to update it. The third time not a single person looked up to say hello or ask if I was looking for something. Instead the bickered at the counter about a sale price. It was awkward. I left. I tried. Just not a nice atmosphere. read more

Service wasn't great. Barely there at all. I was scouting the place to see if there was anything "giftable" i.e. for someone's birthday, and I was ignored and given a weird look by the girl at the cash (I am a guy). I didn't see anything that would make a worthy gift but on my way out but I did spot a free magazine behind the counter. I've shopped here a few times and reluctantly returned one evening and ended up buying a few shirts and some accessories. It seems every time i've been there owner or manager is complaining about the something. Either about a customer or the struggles of small business there's always something and it's unprofessional. She's even undermined her employees in front of me several times by interjecting at inappropriate times. I feel like the quality of the clothes since their move from Dalhousie has drastically changed (for the worst). After my last experience its safe to say I'm never coming back. I went to return a long tshirt that after ONE WASH in cold water came out pretty much like a crop top. I had bought it recently enough that it was still in store and the clerk was no help. I no longer have the receipt because I don't normally keep receipts for small purchases. She suggested that maybe I could show proof of purchase via my bank statement but I paid cash. Her tone as she lended me the advice "to always keep receipts" was so condescending... maybe she learnt it from her boss? I understand store policy and the trouble a lack of a receipt presents but I've work retail and customer service for many years. I find its always best to try to make the customer leave happy. The store's cost on a poorly made tshirt is much less than the cost of an unhappy customer. I'm a local server that works a few blocks away. Tourist are often asking me for shopping recommendations. I'm going to steer them away from the Milk now. Just walk the few extra blocks to Victoire, Workshop, and Wunderkrammer. Poor Service Poor Quality read more

This is another great Ottawa boutique with clothing you might not find anywhere else in Ottawa. It's a simple store that specializes in casual yet fashionable clothing for younger men and women, although most of the store is devoted to women's fashions. They offer many types of clothing, but can always be relied on to stock great jeans, jackets and T-shirts with funny or ironic prints. They carry brand names like Blend She, Dace, Delicious, Drifter and Vero Moda. They also sell some accessories. Kill two pretty birds with one stone by going to Workshop Studio & Boutique next door. This boutique has a bit more clothing and accessories with great designs by local artists. read more

Milk is easily our favourite clothing store in all of Ottawa. Obviously, being a guy and not being the core clientele, my take on the shop is a bit different. But given how much my wife loves spending an evening or afternoon check out their outfits and products, It's pretty obvious how much we love this place. From a service perspective, Milk is top notch. My wife has always enjoyed the staff and every time I've walked in I've never felt uncomfortable. I've purchased a couple of gift certificates for my wife and niece and in each instance the staff have gone above and beyond to ensure the certificate arrives on time. I really can't recommend this place enough. read more

We visit every time we're in town. I have two daughters and there's always something for each of us. My youngest girl is completely bald and they have been awesome at helping her find cool ways to embrace her uniqueness. It's worth going in just for a chat. Based on how they treat their customers they deserve a rating of -10 let alone 1/5. Visited the place twice and met 2 sales associates (turns out, both of them are the owners), made my shopping experience god damn awful. When I first went in, I had no welcome greeting, they didn't even acknowledge my presence. The owner glances at you expecting you to make a purchase. The customer service is terrible. Second time I go in to return what I bought, I once again receive another awful treatment. I wasn't fully aware of the store return policy, turns out you don't get a refund but rather only store credit or exchange only. I've been into many clothing boutiques with similar return policy and never have I felt so repelled to get my money back. After she gives me a receipt thinking I got my money back, I asked her if she didn't need my card and she says that this store only does store credit or refund and I tell her that the other person didn't tell me that. Then she says that, that's her sister, the co-owner. She completely dismisses me and moves on to the next customer. If I had gotten a genuine response and a better customer service I wouldn't be this angry. What good is this store credit going to do for me considering I never want to purchase anything from them again, let alone step another foot in that store? read more

Listen, I love the clothes. HOWEVER I had an experience a few weeks ago that made me upset. I was at the counter looking at pins, and found one that said "a dingo ate my baby". I commented on this to my friend, remarking that the quote is from a movie I had seen, called Evil Angels. The cashier, a woman with very short hair, then interrupted to VERY coldly and condescendingly say "it's a tv show, called Seinfeld. Watch it." I AM AWARE OF THE SHOW SEINFELD, however IN this tv show they REFERENCE the aforementioned movie. If you're going to humiliate your customers, at least have your facts straight. That being said, fantastic products. Only a star off for this experience. read more

The manager has a really bad attitude. Everytime I go in there she is grumpy and talks down to customers and employees. I understand not everyday is perfect but she is always mean. She needs to work on being kinder to others, it reflects very poorly on her business. I thought maybe it was just me but others have mentioned it as well. read more

I'll start off by saying it's unfortunate to see a number of poor reviews. This store is one of the very few stores/boutiques in Ottawa where I do feel comfortable going in. I feel welcomed I feel valued and appreciated. I never feel pressured to buy anything, even though I frequent the store quite a bit. I even appreciate that the style of the clothing is trendy, but unique enough to not look cookie-cutter. It's affordable (Not Forever21, but certainly not Nordstrom priced). I've gone in to so many stores in Ottawa where people haven't even given me a second glance, because I wasn't looking trendy or my makeup wasn't on point that day or whatever, but not here, not at Milk. I recommend it to all my friends; the fashion conscious ones or the unsure where to start ones. Chances are you'll find what you are looking for. read more

My daughter purchased a dress from this shop for a wedding. One hour before the wedding she puts it on and the zipper will not work. (the second time putting on the dress) She brings it back with a receipt and the owner will not give her her money back or any compensation. I've loved this store since the first time I've walked in at their old location on Dalhousie. They have a good selection of clothing and the staff is usually nice and helpful. Today however, was not the case. I walked into the store holding a cup of coffee and started browsing. In a few minutes, I was approached by a customer service representative advising me to leave my cup at the entrance. It was a hot day and I was holding a half-full cup of iced coffee with a straw and a lid on. A single glance was enough to determine that the only possibly of me spilling the drink would be if I decided to do a handstand next to the clothing rack. In addition, leaving an iced coffee for 15-20 minutes would mean that I'd come back to a warm watered down drink that no longer be enjoyable. Therefore, I turned around and left. I find this new policy of the store extremely inconvenient and hostile. I understand that the rules are not set by the representatives, but rather the managers. However, the least she could do is to smile and offer to take the drink instead of talking to me as if I was an adolescent child who is not trusted with liquids around "nice things". I have never been asked to put my drink away when I go to BCBG, Club Monaco, Banana Republic or any other higher profile clothing stores. My guess would be because those stores respect their customers and more importantly want to prevent them from leaving empty-handed. The Milk Shop, on the other hand, has a luxury of not giving crap. Not a good strategy in such a competitive market. read more

I have always liked this store as it is one of the few semi affordable boutiques in Ottawa that sell trendy clothes. I have recommended this store to others. HOWEVER, today I experienced some of the worst customer service I have ever encountered, enough so to prompt my first ever review of an establishment, I bought a winter coat here , which I realize was on sale after Christmas. I was leery buying it because it seemed quite thin for a winter coat but the staff ensured me it would at least be sufficient for mild winter days. I took a chance and bought it thinking I could return it if it wasn't up to par. As soon as I left the store I tried the coat on outside on a -5 day. It was probably about as warm as some sweaters I own. Little insulation, no wind protection, and super thin. I thought I should take it back immediately but I was already driving out and thought I could hold off for a couple days. I brought it back today and was told it was final sale because I bought it at a discount. She told me that most stores have this policy. I told her most stores inform their customers of this and it was never brought up when I bought the item, to which they explained "we can't just tell every customer that" and that "there was a sign upstairs and if I didn't like it I could sell it on ebay". As I never used the product I asked again if anything could be done but I was reminded "no". I would understand if I was just returning the product because I changed my mind, or it didn't fit right, but this was a terrible product. I honestly feel bad selling it on Ebay as I would feel I'm doing a disservice to whoever buys this crap thinking it can pass as a winter coat! Was your policy worth losing a customer and bad word of mouth?? hmmm... read more

I would​ like to begin with the fact that I am a brown girl that has faced many forms of discrimination in my life. However, my experience at Milk has by far been the most degrading. I walked in there, and I had a woman follow me around from the get-go. I attempted to go upstairs​ to view the rest of the store, but the cashier following me around quickly snapped at me that the upstairs was closed - which I felt was a bit off, but I dismissed it and continued​ browsing​. I felt like I was being escorted to prison and that they had no trust in me. Once I had had enough of feeling discriminated against, I decided to start to make my way out​ until I noticed that a caucasian couple had walked in and immediately went upstairs, without the lady even batting an eye. In fact, I heard the lady tell the couple to "let me know if you need anything else." I was quite shocked by the unprogressive behaviour in the heart of downtown Ottawa. Also, their products are very overpriced for what they are, and the overall tone of the store is far too elitist​ for the people who actually work there. I am proud to say that I will never return and that I'll be happy to do my business anywhere else, especially somewhere more inclusive and inviting to people of colour. I recommend that if you are not a Caucasian​ woman, to steer clear of Milk if you do not want to be discriminated against or let down. read more

I usually love this shop, they have great products and I'm in there pretty often but yesterday I was met with some terrible customer service that was really disappointing to come from one of my favourite ottawa shops! I asked to exchange a sweater I had bought less than 24 hours earlier and they said it was not possible because I had bought it on sale. It was never explained to me at the cash that their sale items were not exchangeable. I tried to explain the problem with the sweater and she just cut me off and said no. It's too bad because I was so put off by the experience I won't be going back there. I don't think that stern policy was worth losing a frequent costumer. read more

Extremely rude service. I walked in there with my friends and one of the employees literally followed us everywhere we went and made it completely obvious that she thought we were suspicious. She stood right in front of us just staring while we were browsing. And her other dumb employee asked if we were waiting for anything or if we were going to buying anything at all when I was clearly shopping. Very disrespectful and I won't be coming back, and I will also be telling all of my friends not to return. You've lost very faithful and hopeful customers. Hope you feel good. read more

AVOID this store unless you want to feel completely humiliated! I have been living in the UK for the past several years and came back to visit with a friend. I had spent the entire day showing my friend around our lovely city and all that it has to offer...but unfortunately we ended it on a very BAD note because of this store. As soon as we walked in, there was no one there to be seen...it had a very eery feeling about it and we were about to walk out but then we saw someone hunched over by a computer who didn't even make eye contact with either of us. After looking on the main level for roughly 10 mins, and no one coming to tend to us, we proceeded up the stairs to have one final look before leaving the store. When we were upstairs, my friend saw a dress she wanted to try on but the fitting rooms were impossible to find anywhere. We saw a curtain and assumed it was a fitting room so my friend went inside to try it on....it was then that the owner decided to then make verbal contact and was EXTREMELY hostile, telling her to get out straight away and never to assume that this was a fitting room. She waited as my friend got changed, almost assuming she would have walked out of the room half naked. When my friend came out she looked visibly distraught and shocked by how rude her conduct was so we discussed it together. As we were discussing it, she then intruded and in front of other customers shouted "If you have anything to say to me say it to my FACE as I am the owner!" We couldn't tell but thought she mumbled some profanities under her breath. My friend being a primary school teacher, was extremely upset and we decided to get ourselves out of there straight away. But this was not to be the end of the owner's reign of terror! As we were leaving, the owner yelled over "Now did you hang it back up for me?" As if it was our job to do so. When my friend said yes she then said "Good! Now don't ever come back again!" I was so humiliated for my poor friend, who in the UK has had nothing but wonderful experiences with Canadians and has always wanted to come and visit our beautiful country. This left a really bad taste on our trip and employers like this should not be in business. We more or less thought that the shop, if it were to give any clue as to what it is like on the interior, should be renamed 'Sour Milk'...not simply 'Milk', sadly. read more
