I started off with breastfeeding at the hospital but could not continue due to it being too painful for me. I kept hearing breastfeeding shouldn't be painful while also hearing it starts out painful but it will get better. In my heart I knew it should be as uncomfortable and painful as what I was experiencing. I began exclusively pumping the second day I was home from the hospital. Things were going well with pumping but deep down I was soooo bummed to not be breastfeeding my babygirl. I had always dreamed of motherhood and breastfeeding was part of that vision. I was easy on myself for giving it up but I still felt down about missing out on the experience. I did tons of research on breastfeeding and proper latch, i couldn't understand why it wasn't working for me. After seeing my mom (she loved breastfeeding her children) she pushed me into giving breastfeeding another shot. I vented to her about the pain and told her about seeing a lactation consultant (they didn't have them back in her day) and she was very much in favor. Still I had my own doubts, like how much of a difference can a lactation consultant actually make? I was definitely skeptical about what they can offer. I ended up giving in and giving it one last shot before totally giving up on breastfeeding. I messaged Jennifer after 3 weeks of exclusively pumping. She was very responsive via text and had availability to see me in person within the next few days which I really appreciated. Let me tell you...... Jennifer. Is. An. ANGEL. Jennifer was truly a lifesaver for me and my baby on our breastfeeding journey. We had a virtual appointment, and she talked me through all the ways to help improve our nursing issues, and then continued to keep in touch with me throughout the week to make sure things were improving. She also gave us a great referral to have our baby checked to see if he had a lip and tongue tie (which he did!), and it went unnoticed before Jennifer spotted it. I too, like so many other first time moms, thought breastfeeding would come naturally and easily. Boy was I wrong. The very first latch right after my daughter was born was painful but I didn't know any better. I continued to latch her incorrectly until the day of discharge when I broke down crying in my hospital bed because I was in pain, exhausted from the relentless cluster feeding and didn't know how I would continue at home, especially with her bilirubin levels elevated. Upon discharge, I rented a hospital grade breast pump and met with another lactation consultant who helped me come up with an action plan. She thought my daughter had a tongue-tie so we even had a frenectomy done, yet I was still having difficulty latching her correctly. I intellectually knew what I had to do (2 point landing, baby's mouth at 140 degree angle, tongue over the bottom gum line, etc) but I just could not for the life of me figure out how to do it. I was fumbling and I needed help quickly because I was losing hope. Jennifer came over to my home and helped me latch her, pain-free right away. Not only is she knowledgeable and skilled in what she does - she is so friendly, sweet and encouraging. She then taught me how to latch her in the side-lying position in bed and this has been so critical in our family actually being able to get some sleep at night! She made some reccs and thought I needed a different flange size and even dropped them off a few days later. She also continues to check in and be available via text which is so generous of her. After meeting with Jennifer I can assure you that the hype is real and she is absolutely amazing. I was actually worried that it might be difficult to get a timely appointment with her because of all her glowing reviews, but I was wrong! As a brand new parent to a 1 week old baby girl, I was worried that my baby wasn't getting enough milk from my breast. I called Jennifer crying and she came over the next day. She is WONDERFUL! She taught me new positions to help with the night feeding and the joys of pumping. We weighted my baby to assure she was getting enough milk and sure enough she was, but I needed that reinsurance from a professional. Jennifer also saw my baby girl had a tongue tie and now we have an appt with the pediatrician, but I am happy Jennifer saw this early (not sure why our pediatrician didnt see this, but thats another story). I'm a first time mom and decided before my daughter was born that I wanted to breastfeed. My daughter was born a month early, so I didn't get the time I thought I'd have to do my research on nursing, lactation consultants, etc. Before calling Jennifer, I hired another lactation consultant who came out to my house and spent 3.5 hours with me. She went through a lot of theory about nursing and only spent about 45 minutes showing me actual positions and techniques. Since this is a review for Jennifer, I won't go into the judgy moments I had with this consultant. I remember feeling just as clueless after the session as I did before, but decided to give breastfeeding a go with the info she gave me. Fast forward 2 days later and I'm panicking because nothing is really working - everything hurt, my baby wasn't eating enough and I was STRESSED. I went back on Yelp and found Jennifer. I called her that morning and she was at my door within a couple of hours. I cannot emphasize enough how awesome Jennifer is. Her approach is very simple and practical. Within minutes of meeting her, she had my daughter latched on and was showing me how to hand express milk. She was very encouraging and non-judgmental - everything I needed. The session lasted about an hour and I was on my way to pain-free, enjoyable feeding sessions with my baby! When my daughter hit 4 months, my milk supply started dropping and I reached out to both lactation consultants again (just wanted to get all the advice I could). Jennifer totally saved my breastfeeding relationship with my daughter, Emma. I was in severe pain for the first several weeks of her life and was going back and forth between feeding through the pain and pumping/bottle feeding for relief while I healed. Jennifer took one look at me and knew something was not right, and quickly discovered what appeared to be a tongue tie (something that was missed by the hospital staff!). She recommended a great pediatric dentist who confirmed a tongue and lip tie, and we had the reversal at the advice and encouragement of Jennifer. After the reversal, we had Jennifer over once more to make sure Emma's latch was adjusting properly, and it's been smooth sailing ever since! When I had my baby via C section last month, no one prepared me for the literal growing pains of breastfeeding, or the fact that it can create a host of problems for mom and baby if not done correctly. A lactation consultant visited me the day after my son's birth in the hospital, but I was so depleted from my surgery and drugged out from pain medication that I couldn't retain anything I was told after that hour-long session. Recovery in the hospital is stressful enough with all the people shuffling in and out of your room that it can be hard to really gain anything from a quick visit like this. Plus, seeing a lactation consultant in a hospital is not going to be as helpful as having someone come into your home to help you in your actual breastfeeding environment. After having a bad latch with my baby, coupled with an inconsistent pumping schedule that brought on mastitis, I knew I needed some extra help getting my son to nurse properly and me to have a healthy, steady milk supply. More specifically, I needed someone to come to my place and take care of me so I could better care for my son. Jennifer answered my desperate email inquiry right away and was at my apartment the next day. She got my son to latch properly, and when I mentioned that I was on antibiotics for mastitis, she warned me that a lot of women and their babies get thrush following mastitis as a result of the antibiotics. Lo and behold, she was right: my son and I got sick again, and we had thrush. As daunting as it was to get thrush on top of mastitis and an infection from my C-section incision breaking open, it helped so much to know what was going on with us, and that my pain was not simply a normal part of the nursing process. I never would have known about thrush had Jennifer not warned me that mastitis treatment could bring that on - this is something no medical professional ever told me about. She went on to recommend that I use nipple shields, which made all the difference in my recovery from thrush. Many people say postpartum medical care is terrible in the US, and I couldn't agree more. It's hard to get help from medical professionals for things like mastitis and thrush after your baby is born. It can feel like a lot of medical professionals want to move on to the next pregnant mom when your baby has arrived, and they don't have a clue how to deal with breastfeeding challenges. That is why having a resource like Jennifer is so crucial to new moms. Every new mom should have access to a lactation consultant, and one as amazing and caring as Jennifer. She will get you breastfeeding the right way and make sure that you as well as your baby stay healthy and happy. She is kind, helpful, and compassionate to all her clients. She even checks in with you after your consultation to see how things are going, and makes herself available via email if you have questions afterward. Before she came by our apartment, I was so worried she would tell us we were doing everything wrong by introducing bottles, pacifiers, and breastfeeding into our baby's life early on, but she is very nonjudgmental and has faith in a baby's ability to adapt as long as the parents are giving that child some structure and consistency. She will never make you feel bad about your choices - she simply wants to work with you on what you're already doing and help you do it better. I would not have made it through my first postpartum month without her help. No one prepared me for the hell that improper breastfeeding can create for already exhausted new moms, but she came in and saved me and my son from further pain and anguish. We are healthy again because of her. We are so grateful to her and will absolutely call her again if we run into any more roadblocks. read more

As a first-time mom I learned quickly that breast-feeding is a very personal, emotional, and often challenging experience. When feeding with my son got off to a rocky start and he was losing too much weight, my pediatrician recommended Jennifer. I had already been receiving a lot of lactation support informally from my birth team, doctors, etc., however Jennifer approached breastfeeding from an incredibly relaxed and confident place, whereas a lot of the support I was receiving was much more panicked or frantic. As a new mother, I was hormonal, panicked, exhausted, and freaking out about a bad latch with my newborn and concerns that my baby got that way because of being given the bottle while in the hospital. I met her first in the hospital and she already had a relationship with my OB (Dr. Francis Chang who is amazing!) so I felt like I could trust her and her expertise already. I had other Lactation Consultant recommendations but Jennifer was flexible about coming out to visit me and I loved her calm demeanor that I reached out to her in my moments of utter despair. Her calm demeanor and straightforward advice are invaluable to a panicked mother like I was in my first few weeks postpartum. She dispensed advice and help in an empowering way and made me feel like all of my feelings and concerns were natural and some of the irrational ones unwarranted, without making me feel stupid or dismissive of my feelings. (Sometimes it feels like some healthcare providers shrug off new moms' craziness). I still remember things she told me, even some advice she said in passing because she was so clear, caring, nonjudgmental, and knowledgeable. I could not recommend her enough. My lactation issues weren't so bad in the bigger picture, but I feel like she treated me with the same care as someone who had more complicated issues. I'm on my second kid and have seen about four lactation consultants but saw Jennifer today and wish I'd met her first. She's incredibly competent and wise as well as funny and real. Her amazing skills shone all the more because yesterday I hired a different consultant who was suggesting that my baby was in need of cranio sacral therapy as well as surgery to laser the frenulum. While I'd be open to these suggestions, we hadn't tried basic yet- these were suggested before my latch was even looked at. I'm so glad I followed my gut and called Jennifer. I hired Jennifer after struggling with 6 weeks of painful breastfeeding following the birth of my first son in Jan. 2018. Jennifer was empathetic and I could tell from the moment I met her that she genuinely wanted to help me overcome my struggle. Being a first time mother, I had a lot of questions - about pretty much every aspect of breastfeeding and infant nutritional needs. The first few days after my son was born were a little rough. Feeding didn't come easily, and as a result I ended up with cracked nipples. I was in a lot of pain. I read breastfeeding blogs and watched Youtube videos and still I just couldn't get a comfortable latch. I was trying really hard, still in the throes of post-partum-hormonal-flux, feeling like a failure at something that appears so simple. When Jennifer arrived at our home, everything shifted. She put me at ease, and filled in the missing pieces of information, showing me all the places where a small adjustment could make a huge difference. She walked me through a bunch of feeding positions and tweaked them to work with my body; she took the time to watch me over and over again until I could get a good latch. When my son's diapers were suddenly filled with something out of a sci-fi movie, she helped us figure out what was going on and talked us through multiple solutions until one of them worked. Jennifer has been an invaluable support, allowing me to feel confident in all of my choices. Despite a number of obstacles, I never gave up on breastfeeding my son. I was having a hard time keeping up with my newborns constant feedings and was having a lot of pain from improper latches even after working with nurses and consultants in the hospital. I have never in my life written a yelp review. Breastfeeding is hard, personal, and emotional. It's not nearly as natural for everyone as all the photos depict. We came home from the hospital having received little to no lactation consulting. We thought things were going ok, but, as the first week progressed I was in significant, unbearable pain. I cried nearly every time our sweet girl latched and all I wanted to do was love feeding her. Like the pictures. We had a LC come to the house. She immediately overwhelmed us with "must dos" which included surgery and therapy for our new baby. As a health professional, I knew this was not the answer. I felt like I just needed support on what to do, what was right/wrong, how to fix it and how to calm my nerves about knowing that it was indeed going to get better. In the middle of the night, my husband found Jennifer on Yelp. She was able to come within a day and her calming presence was exactly what I needed. She helped me see what was going well. Encouraged me. And the best part - told me it was okay to hold my baby (she was hard to put down at all at first) and even helped me have the confidence to transition back into my bed from the chair I had been planted in since we arrived home. She actually got in the bed with me and shared ideas and techniques. She frequently followed up via phone, text, and email and even when I demanded to pay her for that, she would not bill me. I actually felt like I made a friend. I ultimately provided my OB and my Pediatrician with her contact information as when I shared my story they indicated they were impressed and did not have many good resources who would do home visits. Motherhood is life changing, I wish to share our journey with you. While my wife was pregnant, oh all the books we read! All the workshops, all the seminars, all the videos my wife and I studied, reviewed, discussed. All in anticipation for a healthy delivery. My wife took such great care of herself, with healthy food every day, the extra vitamins and daily exercise, yoga and walks, she had never felt healthier in all her life! She went to my last yoga class three days before our baby was born. Amazing. And yet, nobody prepared us for the greatest challenge of our life: breastfeeding. I now believe it was a combination of our moms's experience having been so carefree and easy, and our misconception that once a baby is born, voilà! The baby knows exactly how to feed, all on its own, wired to do so from birth. How wrong we were. We had a personal desire to breastfeed. And so, after the first few days of adjustment after our baby was born, my wife was thrilled to feel her milk come in, we felt all was working just as it should. Suddenly, what we thought was our baby's automatism, became a very, very painful process. So much so, that my wife dreaded every feed, which at that point was every half hour, and tears would start rushing down uncontrollably. She had never cried so much out of sheer physical pain in her life. It hurt so much, and yet, the thought of her adorable baby going hungry was harder still. She kept doing it. It became a vicious circle. Our baby and my wife had to learn together. We had to do it as a team. He did not know how to latch on properly and we did not know how to help him. It took time. Jennifer Leak's, our lactation consultant, help was invaluable. She not only reached our family's breastfeeding goals, but she was always there when we needed her, for knowledge, support and encouragement. Jennifer offered great advice and left my husband, our baby and I feeling empowered. Jennifer is such a wonderful lactation consultant! I was hesitant to reach out for help, but I was having trouble weaning my 6-week old daughter off of medela shields for breastfeeding. I submitted an inquiry for a consultation and she was able to see me the next day. She provided me with several tools and tips to help transition my baby off of the shields. As a result of her help we were able to get off the shields during her visit, and have never looked back! In fact my daughter put on 10oz in one week after weaning off the shields. I am so happy that my daughter's pediatrician referred me to Jennifer regarding the breastfeeding issues I was having upon her arrival. I unfortunately had a milk supply issue early on where the baby lost a good amount of weight post birth with the need to supplement with formula as well as issues I had with her latching and the inability to nurse from both breasts. Jennifer was really helpful and compassionate when I went through difficulties with latching and breast feeding. She always responded very quickly and had lots of solutions to offer. She helped me build my milk supply when it was low, and gave me lots of other solutions for breast feeding difficulties I had. She was supportive of my decisions and very kind when I felt frustrated. I can't really say enough good things about her help. After becoming a mom for the first time I felt confused and like I maybe doing everything wrong. She was very encouraging in helping me figure out what I wanted. I guess I can't reiterate enough about how much that meant to me in such a transitional and intense time. I was really nice to have someone to help me through the initially difficult times. I would get advice from other people and would run it by her and really appreciated her down to earth approach. I had heard that breastfeeding was initially uncomfortable, but after a couple weeks of unbearable pain and horrible damage due to a bad latch, I knew I needed help. When I met Jennifer, she was immediately so warm and reassuring, I knew that she would be the right fit to teach me how to make breastfeeding work, and guide me on my road to recovery (Seriously, my sweet baby did some DAMAGE). Also, after getting really sick, my milk supply dropped greatly, and she gave me great advice to boost it back to normal. After leaving the hospital I was feeling overwhelmed having received a lot of different advice from the nurses and lactation consultants at the hospital. I called Jennifer the day after leaving the hospital and immediately felt better after speaking to her on the phone. She was able to come over a few hours later. She showed me some new positions, weighed the baby before and after to make sure he was getting enough milk, showed me how to use my pump, and left me with some helpful literature. Since the visit she has been available via text, phone, and email to answer any questions that I have had. She is awesome and I am so glad I was able to find her! read more

Jennifer was recommended to me by Dr. Symms at Tribeca Pediatrics (who is also great!) when my baby lost too much weight initially. After a delivery that was full of surprises, I felt relieved in the hospital when she latched easily; I thought I at least had breastfeeding under control. So it was just another surprise to find out my supply was pretty low. But then Jennifer gave me a specific, detailed plan tailored to my needs that I could implement and follow. This allowed me to regain a sense of control and also brought about the desired results. My baby was much happier when breastfeeding and got right on track with weight gain. It's not always easy - there are many hours spent pumping and making sure I'm taking all the necessary supplements in addition to breastfeeding - but Jennifer has made it feel worthwhile and her relaxed and encouraging attitude have made me feel even better about putting in the effort. She continues to check in with me regularly and always responds promptly when I have a follow up question or concern. Between my two babies, I have met with about 10 different lactation consultants and JENNIFER IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST! After not having enough milk to feed my first child, I thought the same thing would happen with my second child. Lucky for me, I had Jennifer during my second pregnancy! She was extremely reassuring and encouraging without making me feel pressured. Consulting with her before my baby was born was a huge help and gave me the information I needed to start increasing my milk supply from day one.
