I had lunch there with clients. It has an interesting history. It's a former mill ... the only one of six mills that is still standing and was built by Tillsonburg's first mayor in 1878. In 2000, it was bought a renovated into the restaurant and inn. It's really cool inside. The owner and his friend fixed everything themselves ... it's very rustic. We sat in the dining room that overlooked a brook. The menu is varied. Apparently it's the place to go if you want a meal of fish. I had lasagna ... it was okay. Our server was friendly. Called to make a reservation for 3 people for a 4:30 seating. Was told that they do not take reservations but they would do their best to seat us in the room we requested that is overlooking the river. Upon our arrival we were greeted by the host who proceeded to seat us at a table in a dark corner of the interior. We stated that we called ahead and asked for a table in the sun room. There were many empty tables in that room as we passed by it. He stated very rudely, " This table is nice too!" We explained that we were from out of town and called ahead and it was a special occasion and we would really like a table with a view. He rudely said, " Do you want to eat at this restaurant or not?" At that point we made the decision to leave this very poorly run establishment. With very rude staff!!! This was always my place to go, the third week of the month! Fish Week. Always a group of us went. Even now that I have moved to another city, I was going. But will really think about doing the drive now. Since the owner passed away they have gone the cheap route, now it's white fish! Not the pickerel they promote. Very tasteless. I would give this place zero stars if I could. My experience there was the only time I have ever walked out of a restaurant and refused payment. So, my party (8 of us, with a reservation made a week in advance) showed up. Lo and behold, they had lost our reservation. After standing around for awhile, we were seated. The waitress took our drink orders, and they were filled promptly (good!). She then took our food orders and left. This is when things started to go sideways. We sat and waited. And waited. And waited. No return from the server to see if we needed more drinks (not even to top up the water). We watched as people at tables beside us came in, were served, and left, and we hadn't seen our appetizers yet. We weren't a large group, we just wondered what was going on. After an hour and a half of no food or drinks, we flagged down a waitress. Turns out our order HADN'T EVEN BEEN SUBMITTED to the kitchen. She apologized, but at that point, I had enough. I left, and I wasn't going to pay for my drink. Fuck them. The rest of my party stayed, to their peril. Figuring that the apology was sincere, they thought the kitchen would prioritize them since they had been sitting for so long. Wrong. They sat for another 30 minutes with no food in sight, until finally my uncle went into the kitchen himself and gave them shit for ignoring them. Not sure if they paid the bill, but I know I will never go back there, and recommend everyone stay away. read more

Beautiful location. Good food. But A disorganized mess. I don't need to hear about how badly the owner treats the waitresses from the waitresses themselves. And they need to remember that this is a service industry - no matter what's going on in the back room they still need to smile and be courteous to the guests. THE WORST!!! SHOWED UP TO NO ROOM BOOKED, NOWHERE TO STAY AND NO APOLOGY FOR THE MISTAKE AT ALL! We were from out of town two and a half hours drive away, I had booked in for my best friends wedding (as I was in the wedding party ) in town 3 months prior. I had been emailing with Lauralee back and forth, gave my credit card information and she had confirmed no only was my room booked for that day but that she would let us check in early as we would not have a chance to do so until late that night after the wedding. So we show up the day of the wedding all ready to check in so we can get to the ceremony right afterwards. The girl at the desk tells me there is no key here for me and no reservation under my name. The woman Lauralee (the owner) who I had been emailing back and forth was not there so she goes away for awhile, comes back and hands me a cell phone to speak to her. The girl behind the desk has already informed me they are booked solid as is every hotel in the area that weekend as there was a huge event happening in town which I already knew. Which is also why I had booked this room way ahead of time. So I take the phone and the owner on the other end was so rude to me. Her literal words were "I don't know what you want me to do, I don't have your reservation". As if she did not even believe what I was saying. WOW. Okay. Not even an "I'm so sorry I messed up" NOTHING. So I went ahead and emailed her back all the correspondence between us from a few months ago proving that I had in fact booked this and she had confirmed, and asked her why or how this could have happened. Apparently there was a death in her family which is understandable then if it happened at that time, why it was overlooked or a mistake was made. Fine. But she just spewed out a huge email about why she was not to blame and, STILL NO APOLOGY. And getting extremely defensive about why I called her hotel "Shitty". I'll tell you why: 1) No apology for the mistake 2) NOTHING was done for myself or the bride that was also staying there (She was extremely upset that I could not have a good time with her at her wedding as I had to drive back home that same evening instead) Lauralee did not think this affected the bride at all which is absolutely ridiculous as the bride was not only about to get married, but was now stressed out trying to fine us somewhere to stay for the night. The last thing she needed to worry about. 3) Her blatant disregard for be "hospitable" in a hospitality industry. All that needed to be done here was give a sincere apology and maybe DO SOMETHING to make up for it. (perhaps some discount for the bride's stay, or a free meal at the very least in the restaurant there, a free stay at another time etc). Been here a couple of times for the Sunday Brunch. Arrive 15 minutes before opening. Very good food and service. But they would not tell me what kind of fish they served only to say it was special. I sent an email request asking for it and did not get a reply. I a fussy person when it comes to fish and need to know what I am eating. I thought it was a law that you had to disclose all items in food dishes if asked. I will probably never return but they have so many customers I would not be missed. First time we went it was delicious. I got the broasted chicken and hubby got the perch. Waitress was exceptional and brought us a loaf of bread while we waited. We loved it and it was now going to be our go to Monday dinner place. Next Monday different waitress, lied to us telling us no bread on Monday lol then when I said we had it last Monday she complained that she had to bake it. Hubby said that's our last time coming. This is a beautiful location both inside and out. Old, quaint and well maintained, the dining room is well kept, clean and warm. I have not experienced the Hotel side of things but on the restaurant side ambiance is where the quality ends. With little to no competition in "causal fine dining" market of Tillsonburg the Mill is able to get away with sub par service and sub par quality food. If you are going to try this place out for Dinner recommend getting there as early as possible on weekends or trying it on a week night as it they make it a practise to allow tables of 10 or more without reservations causing long wait times at the door with little to no explanation why. Once you have been seated you will be greeted by your waitress whom will range in age from a young teenager to adult. Staff attire doesn't seem to be a area of focus as waitress either wear Yoga wear or jeans. You will be seated in a nice warm quaint casual fine dining environment but with a common "diner" feel, cheap paper napkins, sugar packets and creamers, and portioned condiments on the table. The menu is pretty much all over the place with Mediterranean, Steak house, Road house and Diner fare available. Prices are very reasonable but you get what you pay for, much of the food seems to be pre prepare or previously frozen, value for price is there just don't expect a unique culinary experience. The restaurant serves a niche market and serves it very well, If you are looking for an affordable unmemorable dining experience then the Mill tales inn will suit your needs. read more

I had a reservation for 22 guests to celebrate the baptism of my daughter. The food was fine but the service was the worst I have ever experienced. We were 12 minutes late, (I called to advise a half an hour early but had to leave a message because no one answered the phone). Once we arrived the first thing said to us from the hostess/owner Mrs. Lauralee Craig was, "This is why we don't take reservations, I was just about to break up the tables, reservations never work here." (NICE GREETING for a group about to spend $500). When we were seated a waitress came around for coffee but then we didn't see her again. We were not asked if we wanted any other drinks. I finally found a waitress and ordered 4 bottles of wine- it took 10 minutes to get served. Once we had the wine - only 6 wine glasses were on the table because the server broke some and didn't return to finish setting up. I personally had to remove 15 used plates from our tables. Several times there were no plates available for the buffet. After the meal, we weren't asked if we wanted dessert or aperitifs, the waitress just brought the bill and set it on the table. She then came by and asked for the bill even before we were finished. My father-in-law had to go speak with the person working at the bar to order some after dinner drinks on a separate bill. I will never bring a large group back again. I sent a longer version of this letter to Mrs. Craig to which one of her retorts was, I "trust that as Christians, you will have some understanding and compassion for lifes situations. If we had stuck by our rule to not take reservations I am certain it would have run much better....I did see you carry some plates. Thank -you for your help." A complete and utter disaster of customer service! I should have heeded the warnings of reviewers from other sites. One thing this experience was good for..it prompted me to start writing and listening to reviewers! read more

I don't know about the restaurant, but the hotel part of the business is fantastic. Super fast check in, clean room with handmade blankets, comfortable pillows, hot tub, and an okay stocked bathroom. This is the best restaurant and inn anyone can ask for. I come here quite often to have a meal with the owner, my husband and her have a close bond and she sees us like her own family. They try their best for the best experience for everyone that walks in their door. It's unfortunate that they don't do reservations for special occasions and fish week, but who can blame them when they are going to be so busy they bring in 400+ people a night for fish week and about that for special occasions. All their food tastes amazing, decor is amazing, rooms are the best, when we stay we always ask for the cherry room, there is nothing I can complain about with this place. Highly recommend it for Sunday brunch 10-2, all you can eat buffet with fish, chicken, full salad bar and lots of breakfast foods(also not a time to reserve seats, unless you are going to come in with a big group for all occasions, they can accommodate so much better that way instead of waiting forever to get a table). read more

I've been to the Mill on three occasions and each time my family and I were extremely satisfied. The decor and ambience in the restaurant is very pleasing. We've always managed to be seated on the patio which overlooks a small river. I've found the service to be very polite,friendly and efficient. Now the best part...their food which is absolutely delicious. The fish and chips come with generous portions. We recently dined there on Mexican Night and had a wonderful meal. Every one of my experiences with this establishment has been positive and I would highly recommend it. read more

I have been here in the past, good food, good service, good management. Though our experience as a group on Mothers Day was horrible. I typically don't complain though it was such a poor way to end my special day and my family. We arrived at 5 placed our order shortly after and waited two hours before we started getting food. It came as it was ready so the last person that ate was alone eating after 2 1/2 hours. My fish wasn't cooked, my niece (2 years old) was starving finally feel asleep hungry and tired didn't eat her dinner, my mom ordered dark got white. She was afraid to reorder due to the wait. I did reorder ate my fries and twenty minutes later I got my fish. I could keep going but it's not worth my time. We complained on the wait, the waitress was really trying, though we did notice tables seated after us getting served and we had our order bumped by the owner. How terrible us that ? I was so disappointed I went to the owner, the resolution was not acceptable. In the end we WILL NEVER RETURN. That's 18 people that will not recommend or set foot at this restaurant. It's about the experience that makes people come back and we will never forget how we felt this day. read more
