If you're looking for the newest gym at Penn State, then you're probably going to end up at Rec…read moreHall. On campus, there are numerous locations to workout, but none actually have windows that you can actually see outside. Here at Rec Hall, there are huge windows that let you see North Atherton, although there isn't much to see, at least you can see sunlight. Now with all gyms at PSU, there is a ridiculous crowd. You're most likely going to be waiting for machines, and squeezing by a bunch of people just to get from one spot to the next. Sure, I've looked outside of campus to see if I should be joining somewhere else with less of a crowd. After checking out all the gyms in town, it's still better to go with the gyms on campus. The equipment is newer, and is actually maintained. At places like North Club, sure there isn't much of a crowd, but the equipment is pretty old too. Although the equipment is nicer, my gym experience isn't any better. Because there are so many people here at most times, this places get so stuffy and smelly. At a normal gym, I can run a mile and maybe break a light sweat. Here, after a mile, I look like I've been running a 5k because I am drenched in sweat. More or less, I am working out in a sauna. Rec Hall is the nicest gym on campus to get a workout. There are huge windows and new equipment. Sure, the other ones are larger, but they are also a little older. Plus, you're basically working out in a basement. On the downside, the ventilation at Rec Hall is pretty bad, and the gym starts getting humid and sweaty. If only they could actually turn up the A/C or at least open up a window or two. Want to avoid the crowds? Then don't come here between 5pm-10pm. Go when everyone else is in class so that you can actually get a peaceful workout in.

physical plant is great. but, really, could have been better…read more the student activities for students tend to die off because they are chosen and run too often by administrators. the HUB has an advisory board that "meets at least twice a semester" (!). A real student organization to set up activities would lead to more lively program in this space. Not using students to lead and program in this area is sad, and helps lead students to off-campus activities (e.g., drinking), because they are not offered leadership opportunities on campus. This is also leads to the HUB being not a leader in the ACUI.org You will not see a list of events. you will not see a lecture series (at least on the web site), you will not see a movie series. You will no longer see Late Night at Penn State (events on the weekends at night). You will not see student-led program initiatives. oh, and yeah, I'm glad the bookstore is there, but it sucks. it does not do its basic job very well, which is providing textbooks. But, you cannot complain to the university because they outsourced it. If you are in the HUB management, please do correct the web site and include more students in the leadership roles. They are messy and wrong, but they do turn into leaders and learn from it. That is really part of your job, if my dad taught me correctly. but, a great space, well used, and fulfills half of what a student union can do.

A fun and delicious activity! We visited Tastebuds Kitchen…read morein State College to participate in one of their adult BYOB cooking classes (we had gift certificates). We had no idea what to expect, but had so much fun we are still talking about our evening! We registered for the Indian cuisine course (Samosas, Tikki Masala, and naan bread) that took place from 6:00-8:00 on a Saturday evening. This is a fun, lighthearted, and more of a social activity than a hard-core cooking lesson, which we enjoyed. Upon entering the establishment, we were very pleased with the bright, colorful, and simplistic decorations/equipment. Everything was very clean and no extra clutter existed, which is what one would want in a food prep area. For this class there were 3 stainless steel tables (4 people per table) set up with stools, parallel to the demonstration area. We were given aprons to wear and introduced to our assigned station and group members (We had the best and most fun people at our table!). After everyone had arrived and introductions completed an overview of the course and food was presented. Efficiency is best to describe this course. While we were watching the demonstration for one component of the meal, the assistants were placing the necessary equipment and supplies to make that component at our table. After the demo of each course/food we returned to our stations and worked as a group to prepare/cook that item. After we completed an item the assistants would take them from the station to hold for later and we returned to the demo area for the next presentation (the assistants would also clean the area during this time). This process repeated for each menu item. I wish I had this type of set up while cooking at home! After the last item is prepared, the assistants bring each table place settings and then serve all the dishes we prepared family style. I loved the family style where we actually were able to sit and enjoy a full meal of all items we prepared throughout the event instead of just tasting pieces along the way. We had a great time and are looking forward to taking additional courses in the future. Yes, the cost is a bit steep $55pp, but for 2+ hours and a full meal etc, I would go again for a date night/group outing.
