One of our bus tour operators recommended Miller & Carter Steakhouse as a great option for a nicer, fancier (and pricier) dinner. I'll start by saying the restaurant is very nice inside with beautiful wood and decor, and lovely mood lighting. The food was also very good. However, we were not thrilled about the initial wait and seating. The restaurant didn't seem very busy (there were tons of empty tables, yet our wait time was quite long). They also seemed annoyed that we were walk-ins, with no reservation, yet it seemed like others walked in (I believe without a reservation) and were seated before us. When we did get seated, our server was friendly and helpful. We opted for the Valentine's Set Menu, which included a 3-course meal for each of us. We selected the Chargrilled XO King Prawns and the Sticky Chipolotle Chicken. After deciding on the apps, we picked our steaks (a filet for the wife and a Wagyu Ribeye for myself). The apps were really good and the steaks were excellent. I always order medium rare for my steaks but mine came back pretty rare. The steaks came with an option of sides (we each chose the fries), and a wedge salad. Those were good too, but the steaks were the highlight. And the Million Dollar Chocolate Fondant for dessert was the cherry on top. The steaks were great, and the restaurant nice, but definitely pricey. I think if we'd showed up with a reservation, maybe the initial service/seating would have been better. All in all, I'd say Miller & Carter Steakhouse would be good for a special occasion, but I'd definitely recommend making a reservation. read more

You'll need a reservation as this place is always bustling. The dining area is quite nice, elegant and welcoming. While the seating process was quick, the service was very, very slow. However, once our server arrived, the experience improved significantly as she was very nice. The first impression when we got to the table was the paper napkins. For an allegedly renowned and awarded restaurant, that was a little strange. The menu is extensive, offering something for everyone (except vegans--this is a steakhouse, after all). After choosing your steak, you'll need to specify how you want it cooked, select a sauce, pick a dressing for your complementary salad, and choose your sides. If you plan on having more than one drink, it's best to order two at once, as the server is unlikely to return promptly to take another order. The food takes a long time to arrive, so be patient. Everything here moves at a leisurely pace. My wife ordered the prime rump, and I opted for the massive 20-ounce T-bone steak. However, the T-bone seemed more like a thin, fatty 12-ounce piece of meat. While both steaks were cooked as requested, they were tough, and served at a cold temperature, which was evident since the butter on the steaks didn't melt (look at the pictures). The "beef dripping sauce" was good, but also very cold. I have to question the meat quality--both cuts were difficult to slice and full of fat, which is not what you would expect from this type of restaurant. I definitely question the chef's ability. For an appetizer, I had the hot chicken wings with BBQ sauce. Unfortunately, they only served four wings, and they were quite tangy--not really worth taking a picture of. In summary, this is a nice (not excellent) restaurant. It's actually more of a steakhouse for people who don't know much about quality steak. The prices are consistent with the mediocre quality; our meal was approximately £105, including three cocktails. Miller & Carter is more like eating a steak in a diner like Sizzlers, Denny's or Waffle House. We were expecting that the food quality was similar to Ruth's Chris, Smith & Wollensky, or Morton's. read more

Nice steakhouse around the corner from the hotel. Salt and pepper calamari app. Got started on Iceberg wedge with Stilton and Blue Cheese and a nano second later here comes the entree. Grrrrrr. Doesn't matter whether it was a failure by the server or kitchen, it is still frustrating. Wanted to order the Cote de Boeuf rib eye sharing experience with the lobster tail but it was not available. Opted for 16 oz. Rib eye and it was very tasty. Crispy wide fries (or chips!) and creamed spinach completed the meal. Finished with a shared Double Chocolate Brownie and that hit the sweet spot. My sister and I often visit Miller and Carter every couple of months. It's always good but this time the service was exceptional! I had suffered a medical episode in another shop before we were due to go for lunch. My sister phoned ahead to explain and the staff were more than accommodating to us. I think the jockey is still in the house--both steaks were extremely tough - Had better burgers than these steaks . Ate earlier in the week at Los Argentinos- and was very happy and satisfied with both the service and the "quality " of the meat!! A great steakhouse to come and have a burger, salmon, fish & chips, or a nicely cooked steak. My party enjoyed all of the above on our first night in Edinburgh. We walked in from the cold on a Monday evening and were promptly seated in a large, comfy booth. The booths that run along the back facing an open kitchen are a little bright, so if you're looking for an ambiance with dim settings, you might want to sit elsewhere... the atmosphere "feels" fancy but it's not stuffy and actually very casual. In addition to the main entrees I mentioned, we also shared the cheesy garlic bread and sharing board, which is basically an appetizer sampler. The duck wings were surprisingly good (I generally don't like duck)! For my main entree, I had the 8 oz ribeye. The steaks all come with a wedge salad, onion loaf, fries, grilled tomato, and your choice of steak sauce (I chose peppercorn) and dressing for the wedge (Stilton blue cheese - always!). This was a GREAT tasting steak. And for 23 quid, it's a steal at a steakhouse. They also have a kids menu which offers 2 courses for 6.95 or 3 for 7.95. My little one just had 2 and got the chicken lollipops (chicken nuggets - which was really quite good) w/ fries & coleslaw and dessert (ice cream). Service was prompt and very friendly. Do not be lured inside thinking this is a true steakhouse! If you're from the states then you will immediately get it when I say that this restaurant (defined loosely) is on par with a Sizzler or Red Lobster. Really hyped nonsense and if you get fooled into going as I did you will get a thin poor excuse for a steak that tasted like it was made last week and then thrown on the grill when I unfortunately ordered it. Don't get me started around the craziness of ordering the sides. There really aren't any - for example I didn't want potatoes or rice so all I could get was iceberg lettuce wedge twice! This amounted to a half a head of tasteless iceberg lettuce with small diced pieces of tasteless tomato on it. No bacon bits nothing that would make it a steakhouse wedge salad. After spending lots of money for a horrible meal I hope this review keeps at least one unwary traveler from going to this restaurant. read more

The menu is very diverse and the food tasted great. Even when one of us ordered something what happened to have pork on it, they took it with no hesitation and came back with a new plate. This was one of the better meals we had in Edinburgh. The location is really large compared to most restaurants in the area and we went on a Thursday night which was "date-night" so the place was completely packed (we made reservations via their website the night prior so there was no issue). On Thursday's they also have date-night menu offering 3-courses for a reduced price (my wife opted for that with an 8oz fillet and we just shared 2 of the 3 courses) and I got a 12oz Rib-eye on my own as well. We enjoyed everything, the steaks were cooked the right away, everything was very tasty (even the lettuce wedges) and would go back there again in a hearbeat if we were in town. There may be better steakhouses around in the U.S., but for Scotland, this was one of the best ones we found. read more

We had steak, the sauces and chips were absolutely beautiful but the steak was rarer than my grandads stamp collection i asked for medium rare. Was quite hard to swallow even.. In our group non of us got the steaks cooked as we wished..we didnt complain as we were to be else where shortly. (My personal review was denied publication on TripAdvisor, which I find very confusing as this is my personal experience and may help other visitors) First visit to this restaurant/chain and disappointed and angry within the first 5 minutes! We had spent a lovely day visiting colleges with our 16 year old and we were looking forward to our family meal at this place after hearing such good reviews. Even during the day, my wife happened to check the law in Scotland regarding when you can have a drink with a meal and apparently it's 16. Not so, according to M&C who have decided to impose their own law! So, we couldn't even treat our own son to a cider with his meal. Not only that, you're made to feel like a criminal for trying to do so! Now, I don't mind if an establishment decides to have it's own rules, but please make them obvious. We still can't find this information on their website. I also find it sad that a family friendly environment imposes this rule and ignores Scottish law - no wonder we have a drinking problem if we can't teach young adults how to drink responsibly in a restaurant, with a meal, with their own family!! If you've been to a steak house in the USA or even had a steak at Denny's, don't go here. They have a nice atmosphere and decor but the meat is very tough and dry, absolutely no marbling. The place was pretty busy, I guess customers don't know any better, and they take forever to bring your food.
